CHRISTMAS: LET THE LITTLE

CHILDREN COME TO ME, AND DO NOT
STOP THEM; FOR IT IS TO SUCH AS THESE
THAT THE KINGDOM OF GOD
BELONGS. WHOEVER DOES NOT
RECEIVE THE KINGDOM OF GOD AS A
LITTLE CHILD WILL NEVER ENTER IT.
(Luke 18: 16)
At Christmas, our mailboxes are stuffed to capacity
with requests for contributions to various charities:
children, animals, war veterans, the homeless, the
hungry, the jobless, the sick, and the wounded.
Instead of requesting donations, we at Make
Sad Eyes Smile, thank you from the bottom of our
hearts for making possible the purchase of the first
two Filipino medical clinics, serviced by volunteer
doctors, to help the poorest of the poor children in
the Philippines smile because they are placed on the
road to health again, thanks to your generosity.
All children are the hope of tomorrow, so it
is our privilege and duty as followers of Christ to
make children smile by keeping them healthy and
providing their basic needs.
At Make Sad Eyes Smile, 100% of funds
donated are used to purchase mobile medical vans to
Make Sade Eyes Smile, to put sick children on the
road to becoming healthy again.
Did you know that the child mortality rate is
4 to 5 times higher in Manila? Many of the diseases
that plague children could be stopped because they
start with simple ailments, like diarrhea, mosquito
bites, parasites, and rotting teeth that work their way
through gums into their little bodies, causing lifethreatening illnesses.
Make Sad Eyes Smile donors can also smile
because they have shared with needy children,
demonstrating the true meaning of Christmas.

Remember how the poor widow in Zarephath

shared the last of her cooking oil with Elijah? She was
sure that she and her son were going to eat their last
meal and die but, thanks to her willingness to trust Elijahs
word from God, they had food for several years, living
instead of dying from starvation . (1 Kings 17: 10).

You have contributed to saving childrens lives by giving

them the gift of a healthy childhood. What greater gift
could the Lord have asked you to give homeless,
orphaned children who suffer from lack of medical help?
Instead of requesting funds, we express our
deepest gratitude to you who made possible the
purchase of the first two medical vans now being
equipped to serve sick Philippino children.
Just think of how pleased with you Jesus is. In
the name of our Lord who so loves children, thank you,
thank you.
Theres a long road ahead, but weve taken the
first step. Our gratitude to each of you who contributed
to Make Sad Eyes Smile. We know your Christmas will
be merrier, not only for you, but for the children, thanks
to your gift.
Making a sick child healthy is the greatest gift
you can give.

like animals, which the police often did, to keep these
orphaned and abandoned children out of sight and invisible.
It was Christmas, but there were no toys or food for
Lorenzo and Rosa. Instead they suffered pain from rotted teeth
and infections that, unattended, threatened to become malaria.
Their shrinking stomachs pained them from hunger, as they
hadnt been able to find enough food scraps on Christmas Eve.
But their mother had taught them that the Lord would never
abandon them.

LORENZO AND ROSA

Lorenzo and Rosa are five-year-old orphaned twins who live in
Manila. Their father deserted their mother when they were still
infants, and their mother couldnt support them because she
couldnt find work. She abandoned them because there was no
way to care for her children properly and work.
Alone, with no money for food or medical care, they
became street children, foraging for food, clinging to each other
for strength.
Lorenzo, named after the first Philippino saint, and his
sister, Rosa, called a large cardboard box home. It was their only
shelter.
They wandered through streets, clinging to each other
for support, during the day: begging for scraps of food. They
returned to the cardboard box at night. No bathroom. No
running water. No bed to sleep in. They were hungry and
lonely, and felt sick.

They scrounged garbage piles for food and the only clothes
they had were the ones on their backs -- filthy, torn, shabby.
They couldnt go to school and no one bothered to even take
notice of them. All they had was each other. Forced to run
when they saw policemen, they feared being locked in cages

They huddled close to each other at night for warmth.

The children knew their mother loved them, but couldnt keep
them. She had taught them prayers and, before trying to sleep
at night, they recited the Rosary, the Rosary beads being the
only present their mother was able to give them before leaving.
This Christmas Eve, they prayed to God and the
Blessed Mother to help them and to watch over their mother
and the other abandoned, orphaned children who were
suffering.
Yet no one paid attention to them or their needs. No
one helped them. But they persisted in believing that God had
not deserted them. On Christmas Day, Lorenzo and Rosa left
their box home and set out to find food. They were especially
hungry and little Rosa was feeling sick to her stomach. But the
Lord had not forgotten them.
Suddenly, Rosa saw a Catholic sister, an Angelic Sister
of St. Paul, and ran to her. The sister lifted Rosa up in her arms
and wiped away her tears. Rosa pointed to Lorenzo and the
sister summoned help for Lorenzo who was lifted up and
comforted too.
The Sisters took them to the Make Sad Eyes Smile
mobile van where they were examined by doctors, bathed and
given medicine and vitamin supplements to help heal them. As
it was Christmas Day, the Sisters decided that they had to find
good homes for Lorenzo and Rosa. Starvation had left them
both skin and bones, weighing hardly anything.
The twins became very special to the sisters since they
were found on Christmas Day. The Lord had answered their
prayers, and Lorenzo and Rosa were placed in the home of a
kind, childless couple who bought them new clothes, fed them
regularly, and enrolled them in school.
This is an example of how far your donations can reach
from Heart To Heart and Make Sad Eyes Smile.
Thank you, and a very blessed, merry Christmas to each of you.
