FUNDAMENTALS
FORDEFENSE
The followingfundamentals
areemphasized
dailyin a teachingprogression. F
Stance: Everydrill beginswith the properstancestressingthat the knees be
bent (wrists below knee caps)creatinga low center of gravity for
efficientmovement. The weightevenlydistributedon the balls of the
feet for balanceand the shouldersover the toes.
1n 2 Steps: Using a 6" directionalstep puts the player in the proper direction
toward his areaof responsibility
with good body controland balance.
Proper Pursuit: Use a series of pursuit - agility - footwork drills to improve the
quicknessand body controlto changedirectionat the variousangles
toward the L.O.S.or away from the L.O.S.when pursuingthe ball-
4 areasare stressed,
taughtand tied together:
Tackling: Two basic factorsof tackling are desire and timing. Desire can be
motivated, but timing must be taughtby placingemphasison the
proper angles(cuttingthem down), /everage,and extension. When
motivatingthe playersto becomebettertacklers, we challengetheir
timing (performance)not their courage(theperformance).
DefeatingBlocks: The fundamentalswe stressto defeata block are: taking the proper
angle to the P.O.A.,having /everageon the blocker, the extension
into the bfocker(timing),and the neutalization and separationfrom
the blocker. We alsoconsiderthe relationshipof defenderto blocker
and ball carrieran essentialfundamentalto teach. lt is critical for the
defender to have the understandingand awarenessto make the
proper judgment that will effect the successof the other defenders
pursuingto the ball.

FILMSTUDYOBIECTIVES
1. You can developa greatsenseof recognitionby runninga play back and forth before
its completion. Thereis no substitute
for film studywhen preparingfor an opponent.
2. Know the receiveryou are covering. Study him in all the films we have. Know his
strengthand know his weakness.
4. A projectoror TV is availableto you at any time during the week. A good defensive
backwill look at morefilm/tapethan anyoneone the defensiveteam.
Preparation
You have to analyze each play and have a tremendous amount of mental
concentrationon each and every play. You have to rememberthat becausethere is so
much areato cover, and only four peopleto cover it, that every mistakeends up in a first
down or TD. But by ail means, neverworry abouta previousmistake;it is pasthistoryano
the next play is a new game. Learnwhen to play a receivertight and when to play him
foose. Know rhe formation, personnel, down and distanceand field position. All of these
are vital and mustbe takeninto consideration.
