internacional, o seu espao como centro acadmico de inovao e excelncia. Orientada para a criao, transmisso
e difuso da cultura, do saber, da cincia e da tecnologia, a
UTAD aposta na melhoria crescente da qualidade do ensino, da investigao e da extenso comunidade com cinco

Agrarian and Veterinary Sciences, School of Humanities and Social Sciences, School of Sciences and
Technology, School of Life and Environmental Sciences and School of Nursing) and eight research
centres.
With a highly qualified teaching staff well adapted modern education methods, and under demanding commitment to its research, the undergraduate, masters and PhD courses have seen their
quality verified and recognized by the professional associations, the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES) and by employment rates above 80%.
Located in a developing region, this university aims to strengthen scientific knowledge, develop
scientific technology and respond appropriately to global, national or regional problems in a context

s Instituies de Ensino Superior devem adotar uma estratgia para

garantir a qualidade do ensino e a forma como a mesma concretizada, definindo parmetros de avaliao de qualidade. Esta avalia-
o obrigatria realiza-se no quadro do sistema europeu de garantia da qualidade do ensino superior (Lei n 38/2007 de 16 de Agosto - Regime Jurdico de
Avaliao da Qualidade do Ensino Superior).
Neste mbito, foi proposto um conjunto de medidas que visam pr em
prtica uma estratgia de monitorizao e melhoria da qualidade do ensino.
A implementao da metodologia Estratgia para a Monitorizao, Avaliao e Melhoria do Ensino na UTAD, implicou a alterao dos inquritos de
apreciao do ensino/aprendizagem, disponibilizados aos estudantes no atual
ano letivo, os quais foram adequados aos pressupostos de Bolonha. Foram
tambm definidos parmetros de avaliao intercalares, que se concretizam
numa avaliao piramidal e que assenta em quatro nveis de avaliao, a realizar periodicamente: avaliao da unidade curricular; avaliao do ciclo de
estudos; avaliao da qualidade de ensino na unidade orgnica (Escola); avaliao da qualidade de ensino na UTAD. A nova Ficha da Unidade Curricular
foi proposta como um instrumento de qualidade, com carcter obrigatrio, no
Regulamento Pedaggico em vigor e ir dar resposta a necessidades diversas como: processos da A3ES; solicitaes dos contedos programticos das
unidades curriculares dirigidas aos Servios Acadmicos; entre outras. Dado
que todo este processo assenta na plataforma informtica de apoio aos estudantes (SIDE), a colaborao dos Servios de Informtica e Comunicaes
essencial.
Durante o ano de 2011 destacamos ainda os seguintes procedimentos e
iniciativas:
> Procedimentos internos para acompanhamento e avaliao peridica
de ciclos de estudo da UTAD, atravs da Agncia de Acreditao e Avaliao do
Ensino Superior (A3ES), Ordens Profissionais e outros Organismos Nacionais
e Internacionais;
> Acreditao de 110 ciclos de estudo (91 cursos em funcionamento e 19
cursos novos);
> Candidatura ao Sistema de Avaliao da Qualidade de Cursos de Engenharia OE +EUR-ACE, para obteno do selo de qualidade, apresentao
de candidatura de quatro Mestrados em Engenharia.
> Elaborao do relatrio de auto-avaliao da UTAD para a candidatura
avaliao institucional, atravs do Institutional Evaluation Programme (IEP),
associado European University Association (EUA).

igher Education Institutions have to adopt a strategy to guar-
antee quality in education and teaching, defining quality as-
sessment guidelines. The European Network for Quality As-
surance in Higher Education carries out this mandatory assessment

(Law 38/2007 of 16 August Legal Framework of Quality Assurance in
Higher Education).
In this context, a series of measures was proposed to implement a
monitoring strategy and to improve the quality of education. Implementing the methodology Strategy for Monitoring, Assessing and Improving
Teaching at UTAD meant altering the teaching/learning assessment
questionnaire available to students during the current academic year,
which were adapted to Bolognas conditions. Interim assessment guidelines were also created, embodied in a pyramid evaluation and based on
four levels of periodic assessment: assessing the course unit; assessing
the cycle of studies; assessing the quality of teaching at the organisational unit (the School); assessing the quality of teaching at UTAD. The
new Course Unit Form was put forward as a mandatory quality instrument in the current Teaching Regulations and will meet various needs,
such as: A3ES (Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education) processes; requests for the programme contents for the course
units submitted to the Academic Services; inter alia. Given that this entire
process is based on the student support IT platform (SIDE), collaboration
with the IT and Communications Services is essential.
Throughout 2011, the following procedures and initiatives also took
place:
> Internal procedures for the monitoring and periodic assessment
of UTAD cycles of studies, through the Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES), Professional Associations and
other National and International Bodies;
> Approval of 110 cycles of study (91 up and running courses and 19
new courses);
> Submissions to the Engineering Course Quality Assessment
System OE +EUR-ACE, to obtain the seal of quality and the application
for approval of four Masters courses in Engineering.
> Drawing up a self assessment report for UTAD for institutional
assessment within the Institutional Evaluation Programme (IEP), a service for members of the European University Association (EUA).

de 2 e de 3 ciclo.
O edifcio, com a rea bruta de 7.000m2, desenvolve-se em duas alas paralelas, articuladas por um corpo que as liga no topo nascente, abrindo em

O estacionamento abrigado acondiciona 95 lugares.
Ao nvel do r/cho, prevem-se os espaos pedaggicos, os servios comuns e gabinetes para docentes.

No primeiro andar, continuam os espaos de cariz pedaggico com salas
de aulas tericas, com reas mdias de 80 m2, salas de trabalhos em grupo,
gabinetes e uma sala de estudo. A ala oposta destina-se mais investigao, com quatro laboratrios, espaos apoiados por uma sala de lavagem e

As UI da UTAD acolhem inmeros investigadores de outras instituies
portuguesas e estrangeiras.
No ano de 2011 foram criados: uma base de dados de investigadores da
UTAD; uma base de dados dos projetos de I&D; uma base de dados de bolseiros de investigao; o regulamento de open access; o regulamento de bolsas
de investigao e respetivo manual de procedimentos.
Foi ainda incrementado o arquivo no repositrio cientfico da UTAD.
Da poltica de investigao da UTAD, destacamos um aumento gradual na
ligao com as stakeholders e com as PMEs de modo a potenciar a aplicabilidade da cincia. As bolsas de investigao, quer no mbito das UI, quer no
mbito de projetos de investigao, financiados pela FCT e por outras entidades nacionais e europeias, registaram um crescimento significativo ao longo

UTAD e um pedido de patente por uma empresa privada. Um microrganismo, identificado na UTAD, foi depositado na Coleccon Espaola
de Cultivos Tipo.
Foram aprovados nove projectos da UTAD, em diversas reas, com um investimento global de 3,725M, sendo a componente elegvel de 1,3M e o financiamento para a UTAD de 957.234.
Foi efectuada a qualificao da UTAD para desenvolvimento de projectos no
mbito dos Vales I&DT e Inovao, em 18 reas tecnolgicas.
Ao concurso de ideias INOV@UTAD 2011 foram apresentados 21 projetos.
Destes, trs foram classificados nos 3 primeiros lugares: SmartEnergyHub (1
Prmio); EASyringe (2 Prmio); e Green Quality (3 Prmio em Empreendedorismo Feminino).
No mbito do concurso de ideias, INOV@UTAD 2010, o projeto IDVet - prmio Empreendedorismo Feminino - deu origem, em 2011, empresa IDV Investigao e Servios Especializados (www.idv.pt), instalada no Parque de Cincia e Tecnologia - Avepark.
Tambm o projeto AnesthEasy, 1 classificado no INOV@UTAD 2010, foi
apresentado no concurso Idea2Products (I2P 2010) da COTEC, tendo ficado
classificado em 3 lugar. O mesmo projecto foi, em 2011, submetido plataforma Technology Commercialization Accelerator (ACT) para financiamento por
capital de risco, estando neste momento em anlise.
Em parceria com a Rede UTEN foi organizado o Entrepreneurship Day@

UTAD, que contou com a interveno de Gary Hoover e Cam Houser da Universidade de Austin. Este evento teve como objetivo a sensibilizao dos alunos para
a criao de empresas de base tecnolgica.
Entre outras actividades e no mbito da COTEC Portugal - Associao
empresarial para a Inovao - a UTAD apresentou uma equipa ao Programa
COHITEC, para valorizao das tecnologias: Processo de Aglomerao de Partculas dos Sectores da Madeira e da Cortia e Processo de Aglomerao de
Fibras de Madeira para a Produo de Placas ou Painis de Aglomerado, patenteadas pela UTAD.

The IDVet project, winner of the Womens Entrepreneurship prize in the INOV@UTAD 2010 competition for
new ideas, developed in 2011 into the company IDV Investigao e Servios Especializados (www.idv.pt), located in
the Avepark science and technology park.
Another of the INOV@UTAD 2010 prizewinners, AnesthEasy (1st prize), was entered in the COTEC competition
Idea2Products (I2P 2010), where it won 3rd prize. The same
project was submitted to the Technology Commercialization Accelerator (ACT) platform in 2011 for risk capital, and
is currently being analysed.
The Entrepreneurship Day@UTAD was organised in
partnership with the UTEN Network, featuring Gary Hoover and Cam Houser of the University of Texas at Austin.
The aim of this event was to raise students awareness on

setting up technology-based firms.
Among other activities, and within the remit of COTEC
Portugal - Associao empresarial para a Inovao - UTAD
presented a team to the COHITEC Programme, to evaluate
the technologies: Particle Agglomeration Process in the
Wood and Cork Sectors and Wood Fibre Agglomeration
Process for Particle Board Production, patented by UTAD.

consolidao e incremento das relaes bilaterais com as congneres europeias e concedeu-se a um enfoque especial cooperao
com os Pases Africanos de Lngua oficial Portuguesa (PALOPs), com o Brasil

O incentivo mobilidade foi bem acolhido, registando-se um aumento em
todos os programas. Ao nvel do LLP-Erasmus, reforou-se o nmero de contratos de cooperao com instituies congneres (56) e acolheram-se mais
alunos provenientes destas instituies parceiras, superando a meta da centena e meia de alunos, quer enviados (outgoing) quer recebidos (incoming).
Ao nvel da mobilidade, ao abrigo dos convnios Luso-brasileiros para o
1 ciclo, continuou a crescer na mobilidade de alunos de e para instituies de
ensino, em todos os ciclos de ensino, que crescer ainda mais com a recente
adeso da UTAD ao programa das licenciaturas internacionais com a CAPES,
Brasil. Ao nvel dos 2 e 3 ciclos o ano de 2011 traduziu-se num total de 162
estudantes matriculados em mobilidade (56 de doutoramento e 106 de mestrado). Se associarmos aos alunos de mestrado, das edies de 2010 e 2011
(279 alunos) e aos de doutoramentos das edies de 2009, 2010 e 2011 (188
alunos), estiveram na UTAD em 2011 cerca de 467 alunos, ao abrigo deste
programa.
A cooperao com os pases africanos de lngua portuguesa fez-se de
uma forma slida e com objetivos claros. De realar o esforo que se desenvolveu junto de Instituies de Ensino Superior (IES) destes pases entre os
quais se destacam: a receo da ABRUEM (Associao Brasileira de Reitores
das Universidades Estaduais Municipais) e da delegao da Fundao Universitria Feevale (Brasil); o acolhimento da comitiva do Governo Provincial da
Lunda Sul e da delegao da Universidade de Lueji ANKonde (Lunda Norte), e
o desenvolvimento do projeto Educar incluir; a receo de representantes
da Universidade Privada e da Universidade Pedaggica de Angola; o encetar de relaes com Instituto Universitrio de Contabilidade Administrao e
Informtica-IUCAI (So Tom e Prncipe) e com a Universidade Eduardo Mondlane (Moambique).
Por ltimo, no que toca cooperao com a China, foi alcanado o acordo
de cooperao e um memorando de entendimento com a Shanghai University

ISO 9001:2008) que ir garantir uma melhor prestao de servios nossa
academia e que dever culminar na sua certificao no final de 2012.

Associao Acadmica da Universidade de Trs-os-Montes e Alto

Douro (AAUTAD) representa cerca de 7500 estudantes, que tm
uma importncia significativa na Regio Transmontana e um papel
preponderante na economia local; a urbe da cidade de Vila Real tem cerca de

30.000 habitantes, onde a AAUTAD representa mais de 25%.
A AAUTAD a maior Associao Recreativa, Cultural e Desportiva da
Regio Transmontana, e alm dos rgo Sociais, como a Direo, a Mesa
da Assembleia e o Conselho Fiscal, composta por Ncleos Autnomos de
Cursos e Seces Autnomas Desportivas e Culturais. Ao nvel das Seces
Desportivas existem atualmente 2 modalidades federadas e estando tambm
representada em 12 modalidades universitrias. As Seces Culturais desenvolvem atividades para os estudantes desta academia como tambm para a
regio inserida.
O momento actual apresenta grandes desafios, onde necessrio estarmos ativos e dinmicos, desenvolver novas atividades e participar ativamente
na defesa e representao de todos os Estudantes da Academia.
No que respeita aos novos alunos, cerca de 1200 anualmente, a maioria

Homenagem ao Professor Fernando Real Tribute to Professor Fernando Real
A UTAD enalteceu o antigo Reitor ao atribuir o seu nome ao Museu de
Geologia, do qual foi fundador h 25 anos. Na iniciativa, promovida pelo
Departamento de Geologia da UTAD, o Reitor, Prof. Carlos Alberto Sequeira, realou as qualidades do homenageado e anunciou que o edifcio de Geocincias da UTAD passaria, tambm, a ter o seu nome.
O programa incluiu a inaugurao de exposio sobre a vida e obra do
Prof. Fernando Real, de monumento evocativo e da Sala de Exposies
Temporrias.
Nesta homenagem intervieram tambm a Prof. Elisa Gomes, em
nome dos organizadores, os Profs. Rogrio Rocha (Presidente da Sociedade Geolgica de Portugal), o Prof. Armando Mascarenhas Ferreira
(Reitor Honorrio da UTAD), um representante dos antigos alunos (Prof.
Virglio Alves) e um representante da famlia do homenageado (Eng.

included the opening of the exhibition on the life and work of Professor
Fernando Real, the unveiling of the memorial and inauguration of the
Temporary Exhibitions Room.

With the aim of promoting and disseminating innovation and the University activities in the areas of technological entrepreneurship, technology

16 November, an initiative marked by the presentation of important research projects.

Histria da Universidade
A Universidade de Trs-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD) nasceu em maro
de 1986. Contudo, o seu historial remete para o incio da dcada de setenta,
num perodo de abertura governamental visando a correo das assimetrias
regionais e que resultou na criao, em 1973, do Instituto Politcnico de Vila
Real (IPVR), cujas primeiras aulas tiveram incio em dezembro de 1975. Este
Instituto, que nos seus primeiros tempos funcionou em diversos espaos
fsicos da cidade, acabou por fixar o grosso da sua atividade na atual Quinta
de Prados, assumiu, desde logo, um papel relevante no desenvolvimento

abrindo rumos de crescimento que envolveram toda a sociedade civil. Esta

reconhecimento universal da sua intensa atividade dos domnios do ensino
e da investigao cientfica e tecnolgica, permitiu que o Governo elevasse a

The History of the University

The University of Trs-os-Montes e Alto Douro (UTAD) was founded in March
1986. However, its history goes back to the early seventies, to a period of
government receptiveness aiming to correct regional disparities, resulting
in the creation of the Polytechnic Institute of Vila Real (IPVR) in 1973, whose
first classes began in December 1975. This Institute, which in the early
years was spread over several physical spaces, established its main activity
in Quinta de Prados and assumed an important role in the development,
not only of its home district, but of the entire Northern Interior of Portugal,
opening up various directions of growth, which involved all civil society. This
dynamism led to its elevation in 1979 to the University Institute of Trs-osMontes e Alto Douro (IUTAD), and less than ten years later, recognition of its
intense activity in the fields of education, science and technology research
allowed the Government to elevate the institution to university status.
