Industrial IT System 800xA

Extended Operator Workplace

Features and Benefits

Ergonomic design gives greater

operator efficiency: The contoured,

high-resolution screen of System

800xA Extended Operator Workplace presents a seamless, easy-toread process picture. Motorized
desk-height adjustment creates
ergonomic advantages and keeps
operators alert and receptive for
maximum efficiency.
Superior presentation reduces

time to decision-making: Data are

presented as a large overview close

to the operator on an interactive,
high-resolution work-place display,
and on multiple console-mounted
monitors. Information is fullyselectable and highly-readable.
Interaction is truly intuitive.
Safer, more reliable operation:

Operators enjoy an unrestricted

overview of the process area for
which they are responsible, and stay
more alert. They thus react quicker to
abnormal situations. As monitors and
large display back up one another,
redundancy is also improved. Alarm
information lists are easy to high-light
on the monitors and display.
Extensive economic advantages:

Improved ergonomics and superior

presentation of process data
generate economic gains in reduced
downtime and better productivity.
Compared with traditional backprojection, cost-savings can also be
made in installation and floorspace
requirements.

Perfect presentation of
process information
System 800xA Extended Operator Workplace, based on 800xA Process
Portal, projects a perfect picture of industrial process data on a contoured,
large-screen overview. Unlike many large displays that seem designed
merely to impress control room visitors, the Extended Operator Workplace
gives operators the functions that matter most to them: an outstanding
interactive, high-resolution display, full and easy-to-read information, an
intuitive interface, effective alarm and trend display management, process
interaction, and ergonomics that raise safety, comfort and efficiency to new
levels.
Senior management can also benefit from the Extended Operator Workplace design. As well as helping operators make better decisions faster, its
installation in existing control rooms does not require extensive rebuilding,
thus saving time and costs. Floor-space requirements are also reduced
compared with traditional back-projection solutions.
A typical control room configuration is comprised of a two-projector workplace with a 2.1 x 0.8 meter screen, 2560 x 1024 pixel resolution and up
to four console-mounted 21 monitors, or a three-projector set-up with a
3.1 x 0.8 meter screen, 3840 x 1024 pixel resolution and up to six 21
monitors, all fully motorized. Larger systems with four or more projectors,
higher resolution, more monitors, etc., are also possible.

The modern control room

superior ergonomics and economics

The modern System 800xA

Extended Operator Workplace
reduces time to decision and
action in the process industry.

The new modern control room is a reality. System 800xA Extended Operator
Workplace provides superior ergonomics for process operators and improved
economy for plant owners.
A typical Extended Operator Workplace set-up comprises a large, high-resolution
screen contoured for optimal visibility and four to six monitors integrated within
a motorized, height-adjustable operator desk system. The large screen normally
displays an overview of the process, but can incorporate and display any type of
information, e.g. a drawing or video. The monitors are typically reserved for
process displays from different parts of the plant, but can also feature other data
displays, e.g. alarm lists, trends, operator instructions and other documentation.
All information is selected according to individual needs, and can be moved
freely between monitors or can be spread out over several monitors for enhanced
visibility.

Multiple monitors provide more viewing space and better placement of important information. Applications can be moved from one monitor to
another or be displayed simultaneously over several.

Interactive display
improves workflow
and speeds response

A control situation requiring detailed yet speedy analysis can be seriously

hindered if the data is presented on an inflexible, limited-visibility screen on a
distant wall. The Extended Operator Workplace design eliminates these barriers.
With the extended operator workplace, the operator can remain in place at the
console with current information displayed on the front monitors. He or she
can then call-up alarm lists, trend displays, a flow diagram or any other monitor
display on the high-resolution large workplace display. As this display is fully
interactive, users can click and navigate at will and place information windows
at any desired location. This free movement of process data on monitors and the
large workplace makes it easy to work actively, especially on the large display.
Furthermore, the large screen can be raised to further enhance group readability
and interaction. Note that the operator desk system with the monitors can be
purchased without the large overview for easy and cost-effective control room
upgrading.
This free placement of data, close contact between operator and co-workers, and
clear, unrestricted view of crucial process information improves workflow in the
control room. It promotes effective analysis and response without wasting unnecessary time.

Economic gains in
installation and
operation

System 800xA Extended Operator Workplace can be installed in existing control

rooms without extensive rebuilding, and can save expensive floor space compared to traditional back-projection solutions. Both of these money-saving features
also make it easy and cost-effective to expand and/or modify the operator workplace in the future.
Operational benefits include the possibility to consolidate several operator workplaces into one, thus consolidating the number of control rooms in line with other
productivity-raising measures in the plant.

The Extended Operator Workplaces small footprint saves expensive floor space. Having all the process
information visible at the same time also makes it easier to merge several control rooms into one.

Superior ergonomics
are a good investment in operator
well-being and
efficiency

At the end of the day, it is the human operator who must decide on the best
possible course of action. Maximizing the collaboration between the control
system and the operator is essential. Based on extensive behavioral studies in
control environments, the Extended Operator Workplace brings out the best in
operators in both calm and stressful situations.
Its superior ergonomics create a relaxed and efficient working environment. Since
operators come in all shapes and sizes, motorized operator tables give users the
freedom to adjust sitting and standing heights for optimal comfort. This results in
operators at the ready, able to quickly and effectively manage any abnormal
process situation. Well-designed accessories such as armrests and cup-holders
further promote well-being and efficiency, and allow greater personalization of
individual workplaces.

Easy-to-adjust working height

helps keep operators alert and
receptive. Table and monitor
heights can be adjusted individually.

Personalized workplace with filtered

information

System 800xA with Extended Operator Workplace allows users to personalize

the screen and monitor displays according to their function control technician,
engineer, maintenance technician, and managing supervisor or system administrator, for example. This adaptation to individual needs makes it easier and faster to
locate key information. The time to decisions and actions taken is thus reduced
accordingly.

Personalized displays reduce the time it takes to see and act on important information.

Handles alarms and

maintenance with
speed and precision

Alarms happen and when they do they need handling with speed and precision.
The Extended Operator Workplace simplifies the alarm management process.
The combination of the seamless large workplace display plus multiple monitors
makes key alarm and trend displays highly visible. Other alarms that are relevant
only during certain specified periods/conditions can be hidden by the Alarm
Hiding function so that operators are not distracted unnecesarily.
Alarm management is smooth and intuitive. For example, if a fieldbus-connected
instrument detects an internal error and reports this via an alarm, the operator
sees the basic details in the alarm list. Opening the detailed view further
reveals exactly what the problem is and how to solve it. As System 800xA
Extended Operator Workplace integrates with market-leading maintenance
systems, it is a simple matter for the operator to submit a fault report with details
of the corrective action, receive a work-order confirmation and then see that
maintenance staff rectify the fault without delay.

The large desktop workplace

screen gives a seamless, highresolution overview with many
different options for presenting
process graphics and related
object information.

Extended Operator Workplace

Sturdy and reliable

design for demanding use

An operator workplace should be viewed as a long-term investment; one that is

utilized 24/7 by a skilled, well-educated staff. Regular office furniture will not live
up to their needs or expectations.
In contrast, the furniture and fittings of the Extended Operator Workplace are
made for 24-hour/7-day use. They withstand up to four-times as much wear and
tear and ensure that operators enjoy the working conditions they fully deserve.

Extended Operator Workplace ergonomics create a comfortable, fully-functional workplace where

operators feel good and work optimally at all times. Its robust yet attractive design ensures a long
working life in demanding 24/7 control room environments.
