ST JOHN

VIANNEY
CHURCH

YEAR OF
MERCY
From 8 December 2015 to 20 November 2016.

It is my burning
desire that, during
this Jubilee, the
Christian people may
reflect on the corporal
and spiritual works of
mercy. It will be a
way to reawaken our
conscience, too often
grown dull in the face of poverty.
(Misericordiae Vultus 15 Pope Francis)

A GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO
RECEIVE AND SHARE GODS MERCY
The Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy are actions that we can
perform that extend Gods compassion and mercy to those in need.
Through them we also receive Gods Mercy and Compassion.

Corporal Works of Mercy:

Spiritual Works of Mercy:

feed the hungry

give drink to the thirsty
clothe the naked
shelter the homeless
visit the sick
visit the imprisoned
bury the dead

comfort those who are

suffering
forgive offences
bear wrongs patiently
pray for the living
and the dead
encourage the doubtful
instruct with wisdom
challenge injustice

LETS REFLECT ON:

WHAT ARE THE THINGS THAT I AM
ALREADY DOING?
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE THAT
THE LORD IS INVITING ME TO DO?

SOME ACTIVITIES IN THE PARISH THAT

COULD HELP US TO GROW IN THIS
YEAR OF MERCY.
CONTACT US IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO RECEIVE MORE INFORMATION.

FEED THE
HUNGRY AND
GIVE DRINK
TO THE
THIRSTY

Would you like to be part of the group that

organises the Sandwiches for the homeless?
The group meet to make the Sandwiches
and Soup on Fridays at 10am and
Saturdays at 7am.
Another group distributes them
on Saturdays from 5pm - 7pm.

CLOTHE THE
NAKED

The homeless would also appreciate some

warm clothing now that winter is
approaching, (especially the men).

SHELTER THE
HOMELESS

What about helping refugees? e.g. in Calais.

Or we could support existing agencies.

ENCOURAGE
THE
DOUBTFUL

Spiritual Direction is an opportunity for you

to be helped to reflect on your life and your
relationship with God and others.
Guided prayer (in Lent) helps you to grow in
intimacy with God and encourages you to
live your life to the full as a Christian.
Do you need a listening ear?

VISIT THE
SICK

Special ministers are needed to take Holy

Communion to the sick and housebound.
Do you know someone who needs a visit?
Could you help us?
We will have some formation during this
year to understand better:

INSTRUCT
WITH
WISDOM

What is the year of mercy?

What is a Jubilee year?
How can we improve our understanding of
the Sacrament of Confession?
We will meet on the second Sunday of each
month after all Masses in the Parish Hall
for half an hour.
It will be a time to share, to ask questions.
A really good moment for us to ask for
Gods forgiveness is during the Penitential
Rite at Mass.

FORGIVE
OFFENCES

We offer forgiveness to our neighbours

during the Sign of Peace.
If you wish to receive the Sacrament of
Reconciliation there are confessions every
Saturday after the 9:15 am Mass.
We will have Penitential Services in Advent
(on the 18th December 2015 at 7:30pm) and
in Lent (on the 18th March 2016 at 7:30pm)

CHALLENGE
INJUSTICE

Would you like to take part in Justice and

Peace activities or volunteer to help?

COMFORT
THOSE WHO
ARE

POPE FRANCIS PRAYER FOR THE JUBILEE

YEAR OF MERCY
Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful
like the heavenly Father,
and have told us that whoever sees you, sees Him.
Show us your face and we will be saved.
Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being
enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking
happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his
betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief.
Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you
spoke to the Samaritan woman: If you knew the gift of God!
You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who
manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the
Church be your visible face in the world,
its Lord risen and glorified.
You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in
weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in
ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel
sought after, loved, and forgiven by God.
Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its
anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace
from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may
bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the
oppressed, and restore sight to the blind.
We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy,
you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit
for ever and ever. Amen.
