PROJECTS
The PASST project was born out of teacher trainings that took place during the 2012-13, and
2013-14 school years. PASST is a collaboration of educators across the state of Michigan who
have taken part in rigorous assessment development training to create a series of next
generation assessments for Social Studies that measure both the content set forth by the
Michigan Content Expectations and the skills stressed in the Common Core State Standards
(CCSS) and the College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework.
The Assessment and Curriculum Activity as part of the Technology Readiness Infrastructure
Grant (TRIG) will focus on providing classroom level resources for use by students that builds
and strengthens the rigorous thinking skills critical to student success in social studies. The
Digital Textbook Initiative will help enhance the integration of skill acquisition and content
application necessary for 21st Century Citizens. The textbooks will not be a replacement for
curriculum or instruction, but rather an additional resource designed to support existing
curriculum and instruction that also helps prepare students for next generation assessments.
The books will be a free, up to date resource available for use by students across the state.
Students will be given ample opportunities to conduct activities such as:
Analyzing sources
Argumentative writing
The C3 Alignment Project (C3AP) will take place during the 2014-2015 school year. The purpose
of the project is to align the Michigan Grade Level and High School Course Content Expectations
(GLCE and HSCE) with instruction and assessment through the lens of the College, Career, and
Civic Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies State Standards.
The leadership for the project, supported by the Michigan Department of Education (MDE), is
being coordinated by the Michigan Social Studies Supervisors Association (MSSSA), the Michigan
Council for the Social Studies (MCSS), the Michigan Council for Civic Education (MCCE), the
Michigan Council for Economics Education (MCEE), the Michigan Geographic Alliance (MGA),
the Michigan Council for History Education (MCHE), and Performance Assessments of Social
Studies Thinking (PASST). Each organization is recruiting Michigan social studies classroom
teachers, professors, and supervisors to work on the various K-8 and 9-12 committees around
four actions:
Updating the Expectations to create Fewer, Clearer, Higher Michigan social studies standards
Reviewing the Expectations to align with social studies assessment and instruction
Developing purposeful assessment of the Expectations
