Physiology is the science that is applied at the boundary between life and death; this is why
it's so important to those of us who tread that same boundary every day in the practice of
anesthesiology and critical care. The functional difference between a patient who has just
died and one who is still alive is physiology. What the heart, lungs, and circulation do in life
is best understood through some simple, unifying principles of mechanics and chemistry.
But that is not enough. There is also a way of thinking about these concepts that helps pull
them together. Interestingly, that form of logic is almost identical to the way our brains
work when we are solving logic puzzles. To that effect, brain teasers are included at the end
of each chapter.
This online resource provides a concise review of preventive medicine and public health
topics that are relevant to any practitioner in preventive medicine, occupational medicine,
internal medicine, or aerospace medicine needing a comprehensive review of the topics
in preventive medicine and public health. It will also serve as an ideal review before
preventive medicine board examinations for candidates taking them for the first time and
those taking them for recertification.

Mayo Clinic Internal Medicine Board Review: Questions and Answers is designed
specifically to help prepare physicians-in-training and practising clinicians for the ABIM
certification and maintenance-of-certification examinations in internal medicine. This
question-and-answer resource tests physicians and physicians-in-training on all relevant
material related to the goals set forth by ABIM to ensure the success of internal medicine
clinicians. Each chapter is structured as a potential patient encounter with multiple-choice
diagnostic and treatment responses. By testing physicians-in-training and practising
clinician's knowledge of internal medicine and clinical thinking skills, Mayo Clinic Internal
Medicine Board Review: Questions and Answers seeks to promote the best education and
care in internal medicine.
The medical management of infectious diseases and antimicrobial therapy can be a daunting
task for health care professionals. Although expansive textbooks and online resources are
available, we believe that a more simplified, quick reference guide is needed for the dayto-day office and hospital clinical practice. This book is designed to provide information
about infectious diseases and antimicrobial therapy in a format that is readily accessible
and easily applicable to the clinical environment. Highlights of this book include simplified
and thorough drug dosing recommendations for renal function and renal replacement
therapies, drugs of choice for specific organisms (including bacteria, fungi, and viruses),
and simplified antimicrobial and management recommendations for specific infectious
syndromes.

While infections have always played an important role in the history of mankind, advances
in science and technology as well as rapid globalization have resulted in an unprecedented
wave of new and old infections thrust into the limelight.
The recent pandemic of H1N1 influenza virus infection demonstrates the recurrent
theme of emerging and reemerging pathogens that continue to impact public health and
patient care areas. Drug resistance among various organisms (not limited to bacteria) has
unfortunately become the expectation and, not infrequently, we have been left with few
or no efficacious treatment options, an experience not witnessed in more than 7 decades.
Human immunodeficiency virus infection continues to challenge our abilities to provide the
desired level of care in most areas of the world. Novel syndromes of infection continue to
be defined as newer forms of immunosuppression and the development of unique medical
devices become standard practice in all areas of medicine and surgery. For trainees and
practitioners in the field of infectious diseases today, these factors mandate intense study
to establish an expertise in the field that is required to provide best practices now and
beyond. This board review will be pivotal in that education. This book is designed and
intended primarily for infectious diseases trainees and practitioners preparing for the
infectious disease subspecialty examination of the American Board of Internal Medicine.
We believe that this book will also be useful to infectious diseases practitioners as well as
general internists and other clinicians who desire a comprehensive but practical overview of
contemporary infectious diseases topics.
This resource features a collection of more than 150 very unusual intrathoracic conditions
that every pulmonologist, thoracic surgeon, and chest radiologist should know and
understand. Featuring a broad array of chest images and corresponding pearls of wisdom
on how to best interpret the chest radiograph and other images that are reviewed primarily
by pulmonologists, thoracic surgeons, radiologists, and pathologists, the conditions are
presented in a didactic, user-friendly, and interactive tutorial format to help practitioners
recognize these conditions when encountered in practice.

The fourth edition of Mayo Clinic Cardiology continues the tradition of all previous
editions: a succinct yet comprehensive teaching and learning resource rather than an
overwhelming reference work.
