Brochure
Description:

An offset folding brochure about The Plant Shop on BYU-Idaho campus.

Programs:

Adobe InDesign, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator

Date:

December 6, 2015

Course:

Comm 130 Visual Media

Instructor:

Ben Pingel

Objectives:

To bring together three Adobe pograms to make a greater whole.

Process:

I started by creating my logo in Adobe Illustrator. I created that by

downloading a font off of dafont.com and creating a leaf image with the pen
tool. I then took that Logo into InDesign and began creating my brochure.
I set up the measurements for an offset brochure, and then began finding
images that would go well with my idea of The Plant Shop. After finding
several images, I was able to decide on my color scheme and began playing
around with the placement of my images and my logo. I wrote all of my body
copy and then inserted it into my design keeping in mind alignment, gestalt,
and proximity. I also inserted an image into Photoshop, cut a plant out of
that image using the quick selection tool, and exported it as a PNG so that
everything except my cut out image would be transparent. I placed that into
my InDesign document and wrapped text around that image using the alpha
channel text wrap tool. I gathered critiques and made improvements to my
design that resulted in better flow and alignment.

Montage
Description:

An uplifting montage created by blending two images together and using

creative typography.

Programs:

Adobe Photoshop

Date:

October 24, 2015

Course:

Comm 130 Visual Media

Instructor:

Ben Pingel

Objectives:

Blend two images together in Photoshop to create a montage.

Process:

I started by finding my two images on unsplash.com. I had one image of birds

flying in the sky and one image of a dock with the ocean in the background.
I then created an 8.5 x 11 file in Photoshop and imported those photos. I
started by creating a mask, and began blending the two images together with
the brush tool. After much blending and using almost every possible level
of opacity in the process, I felt as if you could not tell where my bird image
specifically started or ended. I initially added another mask layer to the dock
photo and added sharpening to the dock, but after printing I realized I did
not like how it looked. So instead, I added a mask layer to the birds image
and used the sharpening filter to bring out the birds in the center of the
image more. I thought it was a nice effect making them really feel closer than
any of the other birds in the image! After printing once, I also decided to add
some vibrance and brightness to my image because it was looking a little bit
dull. As for my text, I downloaded the Pennellino font off of dafont.com
to use for the word overcome and had a lot of fun creating that central
correlation of type and rectangles. I even learned how to bend my type,
which I did slightly with the word overcome as well.

Logo design for a company named Plum Paper.

Course:

Comm 130 Visual Media

Instructor:

Ben Pingel

Objectives:

To learn how to make an appealing logo using proper design elements.

Process:

I created this logo in Adobe Illustrator, a program that I had never used
before this project. I really enjoyed getting to know the program. I had a fun
time getting to know the pen tool and the abilities that it has. After making
three different logo designs, I got votes on each one, and decided to make
my final draft with the design you see above. I refined my font choice, making
it thicker and more legible, refined my use of alignment with the word
designs and the paper book icon, and also improved my color scheme. I
also made three different versions of my logo so that my client would see
how it looks on a white background , in greyscale, and in all white on a
colored background. This allows them to get a better feel for the logo and
how it looks in several different scenarios that they may experience while
using it for their company.

Objectives:

To create something visually appealing without the Adobe programs.

Process:

I used Microsoft Word, version 2011. I found this image in the BYU-Idaho
library, and scanned it onto my flash drive. After making some sketch ideas,
I imported my image into Microsoft word, and began bringing my favorite
sketch to life. I worked really hard to align everything with something else
in this design, so I used the ruler tool a lot. I also used the dropper tool to
get the purple just the right color that I wanted for my design, and used
the color wheel to get the correct shades of purple for my monochromatic
scheme. I reviewed the FOCUS principles as I worked as well to make sure
my design was effective. I wanted my design to be fairly simple and clean
looking, and I feel as if I did that well. It is suprising what you can create in
programs like Microsoft Word!

Date:

October 2, 2015

Course:

Comm 130 Visual Media

Instructor:

Ben Pingel

Objectives:

To create a flier using InDesign and learn the basics of the program.

Process:

I started out my design process by gathering information about the flier I

would be creating, and thinking about the audience I was reaching for and
the message I was trying to convey. I then began sketching different designs
that I thought matched up with these ideas I was pondering about. After
several designs, I chose one that I liked best and opened up Adobe InDesign
and started creating my flier. My flier started very similar to my sketch, but
gradually transformed into my final draft as I thought more about how to
best use contrast, unity, and organization principles. I focused on alignment
and contrast in this flier in addition to many other design principles that I
have learned in my Comm 130 class. I ended up making additional changes
to this design for this portfolio that really changed the whole feel of my
design including adding the color purple, and rearranging my text.

Web Design
Description:

Web design with the inclusion of an original logo.

Programs:

HTML, CSS, Adobe Illustrator

Date:

November 20, 2015

Course:

Comm 130 Visual Media

Instructor:

Ben Pingel

Objectives:

Showcasing my skills in creating logos and in the basics of HTML and CSS.

Process:

This was actually a very time consuming project for me! I learned the minimal
basics of both CSS and HTML and how to work with them in Text Wrangler,
but that really wasnt enough to make my web page look the way I wanted it
to. I spent many hours searching on the internet how to code certain things
into my web page and even though not all of my attempts were successful,
many of them were! I also got help from some lab assistants in the library
who were experienced with HTML and CSS and had them help me achieve
the look I was trying to create. I then grabbed colors from my logo and used
them throughout my design to make it more unified. I also unified the text
across my design to a font that went better with my logo. This was a difficult
project for me because instead of just dragging a textbox down to where I
wanted it, I had to code it into a different position, which was very different!
I am satisfied with my final project even though not everything I envisioned
was brought to life.

Business Card

This is the creation of a business card for a travel agency called McEwan
Cruises & Travel with an originial logo

Programs:

Adobe InDesign, Adobe Illustrator

Date:

November 7, 2015

Course:

Comm 130 Visual Media

Instructor:

Ben Pingel

Objectives:

To learn how to use InDesign and Illustrator coherently.

Process:

I started with some sketches, and then hit Adobe Illustrator to create my
logo. Lets just say I ended up with a logo much different than I thought I
would! My sketches were mostly circular in shape, and I ended up moving
to squares! Nevertheless, I really like the final product of my icon! It took
a lot of work with the pen tool, and some of my shapes required several
attempts and changes. After I finished creating my logo, I saved it and placed
it into an Adobe InDesign document and began creating my business card
and letterhead. It was fun creating a style that was consistent throughout
these documents and I was sure to include alignment in each of my designs
as well. I found a watercolor image on google that was high quality and
went well with my monochromatic color scheme, so I downloaded it and
placed it in InDesign. I ended up incorporating that watercolor image into
my business card and letterhead! Overall, I was trying to create a visually
appealing product while keeping my design simple and professional looking.

Letterhead
Description:

Letterhead coordinating with previous business card and incorporating

original logo.

Programs:

Adobe Illustrator, Adobe InDesign

Date:

November 7, 2015

Course:

Comm 130 Visual Media

Instructor:

Ben Pingel

Objectives:

To make a letterhead that coordinates with my business card.

Process:

This process wasnt as difficult as the one of its partner, the business card,
because I was able to repeat a lot of the same design elements in this letterhead
to create unity between the two projects. I had already made the logo in
Illustrator, so I just placed that into a new InDesign document and began
creating a letterhead layout. I used the same font and text style as from the
business card, and also brought over a little bit of the watercolor texture that
I used there as well. I added a little square compilation at the bottom right of
my design resembling my logo to add some repetition and unity within the
letterhead. I attempted to add a water mark on my letterhead as well and made
it in the shape of the airplane in my logo, but I decided that I did not like that
effect and liked the white backgrounf better instead.

Imaging
Description:

This is a demonstration of my photography, design, and imaging skills.

Programs:

Adobe Photoshop

Date:

October 16, 2015

Course:

Comm 130 Visual Media

Instructor:

Ben Pingel

Objectives:

To capture a quality imagine and edit it in Photoshop.

Process:

I rented a camera from the library and went searching for what I would take
a picture of. I initially wanted a monochromatic green color scheme, and
I knew exactly where I would go for that. I was set on getting some great
images at the Plant Shop on campus. So I made it to the plant shop and
found some awesome specimens to take pictures of, but then I also saw this
awesome rusty stool near the succulents! So I decided to leave my initial
monochromatic green idea and go for a complementary green and red color
scheme by putting the succulents on top of that rusty stool. I then imported
my image into Photoshop and increased the vibrance and tried to sharpen
the image a bit. I also did some selective color to bring out the colors that
matched my scheme. I did all of my design in Photoshop, so it took a little
bit to get used to the program while designing. I used a mask and the brush
tool to make the pot that the plant is in overpower the white box reaching
across my design. I evaluated my design by using the FOCUS principles, and
even though my design is simple, I think it is effective and does not take away
from my image.
