results in physical and psychological changes that influence our behavior. The physiology of
emotion is closely linked to arousal of the nervous system with various states and strengths of
arousal relating, apparently, to particular emotions. Emotion is also linked to behavioral
tendency. Extroverted people are more likely to be social and express their emotions, while
introverted people are more likely to be more socially withdrawn and conceal their emotions.
Emotion is often the driving force behind motivation, positive or negative.

processes, expressive behavior, psychophysiological changes, and instrumental behavior. The
Basic of emotion is fear, anger, joy, disgust, acceptance, sadness, surprise, anticipation.
Types of Emotional Reactions :

Anger, the primary occasion for anger is when a goal seeking activity is hindered.

Anger can be a result of instinct, or can be a reaction to something or

someone mistreating or intentionally harming you. Anger turned inwards
can lead to depression.

Depression or grief, situations which cause depressive or grief reactions are

similar to those that produce anger. The major difference is that there is more of
the element of finality in depressive states than in angry situations.

Fear, one of the most troublesome emotional reactions. Fear is a human emotion
that often has unpleasant side effects. Fear can also be protective in that it can
help us survive desperate circumstances. It is a response to an immediate
perceived threat or source of danger

Love, mainly involves a focusing of strong positive feelings on a person. This is

possibly the most sought-after human emotion. Feelings of personal affection and
attachment to a particular person or animal are most commonly associated with
love.

Trust, A feeling of being secure, certain in ourselves, someone else, or a situation

and faith in a process also characterise this emotion. Consistency and
predictability increase trust.

According James-lange theory, emotions occur as a result of physiological reactions to

events. Proposes that you will interpret your physical reactions and conclude that you are
frightened.
For example : I am trembling, therefore I am afraid.

The Differences between Emotion and feeling

Emotions are an abstract, metaphysical state of mind. They are essential impressions
of the world and of your relationship with it. Emotions establish your attitude toward reality,
and create your drive for all of lifes pleasures. Your sense of life is an emotional form that
helps you find a reason for existence and defines your relationship with other things that exist.
Emotions establish your attitude toward reality, and provide your drive for all of lifes
pleasures.
Feelings define your true nature your Authentic Identity something that remains
stable throughout your life. This Authentic Identity is the essence of who you are, regardless
of your personality, or the social and cultural influences of your life.
Your subconscious beliefs about the world and your moral view of it come from the
Authentic Self. They are responsible for the formation of your feelings of identity your gut
instincts, your intuition, your inner compass.
The Authentic Self has its own moral convictions rooted deep within an individual. A
conviction that life is precious, for instance, goes beyond language. I know life is precious,
because I know it. Such a feeling is called an authentic inner belief.

Feelings ensure you will be the authentic you for the rest of your life, because
feelings come from a source that is stable and defined. Emotions allow you to express this
inner core in a variety of ways that are not as stable or defined.

How to Express Emotions

Many people were never taught how to express their emotions. Because they do not know
how to express them, they wind up repressing their emotions instead. For people who have
endured painful life situations, they can wind up engaging in unhealthy behaviors to avoid
expressing their emotions, such as self-injury or developing an eating disorder. Expressing
emotions is the best way to release the pent up feelings. Here is how to express emotions :

1. Recognize the importance of expressing emotions. Unexpressed emotions affect your

life. For example, many people who struggle with ongoing depression or anxiety are
oftentimes actually angry. Because the unexpressed anger has nowhere to go, the
person experiences the emotion as depression or anxiety. If you want to take control
over your emotional life, you need to learn how to express your emotions.
2. Label your emotions. Many people who have never learned how to express their
emotions have a difficult time even labeling what those emotions are. Some people
might feel anger when the emotion that they are actually dealing with is pain. Others
might cry and feel sad in situations in which anger is really the more appropriate
emotion. Practice labeling the emotion that you are actually having.
3. Resolve to express your emotions as you have them. Emotions must be expressed. You
can either express them as you have them, or you can put a lot of energy into
repressing them and just wind up having to deal with a more powerful version of your
emotions later. Decide that you are going to express your emotions as you experience
them.
4. Recognize that emotions are transient. If you will express your emotions as you have
them, they will not last. While you might feel incredibly angry at this moment, your
anger will pass as long as you express it. Only repressed emotions linger for a very
long time.
5. Express your anger physically. Anger can be a daunting emotion for many people to
express. Anger is best expressed physically, especially if you have a lot of repressed
anger to process. Choose a physical activity that will not harm another person or
yourself. Some good ways to express anger include punching pillows, hitting the

ground with a baseball bat, popping balloons, taking a kickboxing class or going for a
brisk walk.
6. Cry out your pain. Tears really do heal a wounded spirit. However, many people have
a hard time expressing their sorrow. Try watching a sad movie and allowing yourself
to cry for the characters. Set aside time to let yourself "wallow" for a little while. You
will feel much better after a good cry.
7. Comfort your terror. Many people who suffered from trauma in childhood struggle
with feelings of terror. Comfort yourself through those feelings. Visualize yourself
comforting the child you once were. See yourself wrapping a thick blanket around
your terrified inner child and hold that child close to your heart.
8. Laugh without reservation. A good laugh can be incredibly healing. Do not stifle your
joy. Instead, express your joy by giving in to an urge to laugh. A good belly laugh can
do wonders for a person's emotional state.
