LEARNING STRATEGIES
Teachers Activity
A. Preparatory Activities
a) Prayer
Please stand up for our prayer. May I call on Ms. ______ to
lead the prayer.
b) Greetings
Good afternoon class! How was your day?

Students Activity

Ms.______ leads the prayer.

Good afternoon maam. Were good.

Nice to hear that youre doing good today.

Please pick up some pieces of paper under your desk and
arrange your chairs properly. Thank you and you may now
take your seat.
c) Checking of Attendance
Let me check your attendance first. Please sign your
signature next to your name in the attendance sheet.
A. Collecting of Assignments
Last meeting I have given you an assignment right? Please
pass it forward at count of 5. 1,2,3,4,5!

(Students are cooperating)

Students are cooperating..

Students pass their assignments.

All papers in?

Let us discuss your assignment. In your assignment, I asked
you to define rat tail splice. What is rat tail splice?
Any other idea?

Yes maam.
Rat tail splice is used to connect two or more wires by

wrapping them symmetrically.

Later, we will find out if your answers are correct.
B. Review of Past Lesson
Yesterday, we have already performed Western Union splices
right? There are two types of Western Union splices, what are
those?
Correct. What is the maximum number of twist in a Short-Tie?

Rat tail splice is usually used to connect wire inside a

junction box.

The two types of Western Union splices are Western

Union Short-Tie and Western Union Long-Tie.

What about in a Long-Tie?

Very good class, you have learned very well. Now lets
proceed to our activity.

The maximum number of twist in a short-tie is 2.

The maximum number of twist in a Long-Tie is 8.

C. Motivation
The class will be divided into two groups. We will play a game.
Are you familiar of the game Charades?
In this game, a representative from each group has to "act
out" a word without speaking, while their group members try to
guess what the word is. The group who have guess the
answer in a shortest period of time will be announce as
winner. Each group is only given two minutes to guess the
answer. Am I understood?

No, maam.

Lets begin..
Let us give a hand to Group___ for winning this game activity.

Yes, maam.

Based from our game, what do you think would be our lesson
for today?
D. Presentation of Objectives
But before that, let me introduce to you our objectives for
todays lesson. Everybody please read

At the end of the class, you are expected to define rat tail
splice. At the same time, you are also expected perform how
to make Rat Tail splice and lastly, value the importance of Rat
Tail splice in electrical work.
E. Unlocking of Difficult Terms
Let us first unlock some of the terms that we may encounter
along our discussion.

Our lesson for today is about Rat Tail splice.

At the end of the class, you will be able to define the

Rat Tail splice, perform the steps of how to make Rat
Tail splice and lastly, understand the importance of Rat
Tail splice in electrical work.

Enclosure- an area surrounded by a wall or closed

F. Lesson Proper
a) Lecture
What is Rat Tail splice?

space.
Symmetrical- two sides that are the same or very
close in size or position
Conductor- a material that allows electricity to
move through it.

What is its function?

b) Analysis
Why do you think Rat Tail splice has to be protected within
an enclosure?

c) Activity
How to make Rat Tail splice?
Lets have an activity. I have here with me envelopes,
which will be given to every group. Inside of these
envelopes are list of the steps in making a Rat Tail splice.

Rat tail splice is one of the most common splice used to

connect two or more wires by wrapping them
symmetrically.

This splice is suitable for wires that are protected inside

an enclosure, such as outlet or junction boxes.

Because this type of splice is not strong mechanically. It

is not meant for wires that will be pulled out or stressed
but rather it intended inside an enclosure.

You are given a minute to arrange the steps and paste it on

the board. Are you ready class?
d) Abstraction
Lets check your work. Are all answers of Group 1 correct?
Are you sure? What about Group 2?
Actually, most of you got the correct order of the steps but
both of the two groups were not able to get the perfect
arrangement.
e) Application
In making a Rat Tail splice, there are only 5 easy steps.
Which do you think is the first step?

Yes, maam.

Yes, maam.
Were not sure maam. No, maam.

The first step is.. Everybody please read.

(The teacher shows the tools and materials to the class)
Next, please read.
(The teacher demonstrates the step 2)
Next, the third step. Please read.
(The teacher demonstrates the step 2)
Then, the third step. Please read.
(The teacher demonstrates the step 3)

1. Prepare your tools and materials.

(Students prepare their tools and material)
2. Skin the ends of the two wires to be spliced about
two inches.
(Students follow the step 1)

3. Place the two end of bare wires in crossed position.

(Students follow the step 2)

Then, the last step. Everybody read.

(The teacher demonstrate the last step)
G. Generalization
Why do we need to know Rat Tail splice in electrical work?

4. Then, twist the bare conductors about six to eight

times.
(Students follow the step 3)
5. Lastly, cut the excess wire if necessary.
(Students follow the last step)

We need to know the Rat Tail splice in electrical work

because it serves us the most quick and easy tool in
performing actual wiring installation.

IV.

EVALUATION

a. It is easy and quick to perform in actual wiring installation.
b. It is applicable for outside wiring.
c. It is costly.
d. All of the above
3. Since Rat Tail splice is not strong mechanically, it is not meant for wires that will be pulled out or stressed
but rather it is intended inside an enclosure.
