LEARNING STRATEGIES
Teachers Activity

A. Preparatory Activities
a) Prayer
Please stand up for our prayer. May I call on Ms. ______ to lead
the prayer.
b) Greetings
Good afternoon class! How was your day?

Students Activity

Ms.______ leads the prayer.

Good afternoon maam. Were good.

Nice to hear that youre doing good today.

Please pick up some pieces of paper under your desk and
arrange your chairs properly. Thank you and you may now take
your seat.
c) Checking of Attendance
Let me check your attendance first. Please sign your signature
next to your name in the attendance sheet.
B. Collecting of Assignments
Last meeting I have given you an assignment right? Please pass it
forward at count of 5. 1,2,3,4,5! All papers in?
What was your assignment all about?

Yes, correct. Who can give me one example of splices and joints?
Any other answer?
Very good class. You really did your assignment.

(Students are cooperating)

Students are cooperating.

(Students pass their assignments)

Yes maam.
Our assignment is about the different wire splices
and joints used in electrical work.
Rat tail splice.
Plain Tap joint.

C. Review of Past Lesson

Let us have first a short review about our last lesson. Mr._____, what
was our lesson all about?
What is a series circuit?

What about a parallel circuit?

Our past lesson is about series and parallel circuits.

A series circuit is a circuit where there is only one

path from the source through all of the loads and
back to the source

D. Motivation
Lets play a game. Our game is called What song? The class will be
divided into four groups.

A parallel circuit has more than one resistor or having

a multiple paths to move along the electricity.

I have here a box with rolled papers in it. Written in these rolled
papers are jumbled song titles. Arrange the words and sing out to
class one line of the song for the group members to guess the
answer. Are you ready class?
Lets begin.
Let us give a hand to Group___ for winning this game activity.

Yes, maam.

Based from our game, what do you think would be our lesson for
today?
E. Presentation of Objectives
But before that, let me introduce to you our objectives for todays
lesson. Everybody please read
At the end of the class, you will be able to identify the different
electrical joint and splices. You are also expected to understand the
importance of the different joints and splices in electrical work.
F. Unlocking of Difficult Terms
Let us first unlock some of the terms that we may encounter along
our discussion.

G. Lesson Proper
a) Activity
Lets have an activity. I have here pictures of electrical splices and
joints posted in the board. I will give each student a corresponding
number. When I call your number, you have to get a name of the
splices and joints and match it with the pictures posted on the
board. Every student have at most 50 seconds to answer.
Are you ready? Lets begin.

Our lesson for today is about the electrical joints and

splices.

At the end of the class, you will be able to identify the

different electrical joint and splices. Also, understand
the importance of electrical joints and splices in
electrical work.

Enclosure- an area surrounded by a wall or

closed space.
Conductor- a material that allows electricity to
move through it.

b) Abstraction
Lets check your work.
Do you think the first picture is called Rat Tail? What about the
second? Third? Are you sure?

Yes, maam.

How about the fourth picture? The fifth one?

Also the last picture?
c) Discussion
These are the different splices and joints used in electrical wiring
installation.

Were not sure maam. No, maam.

No, maam.

First we have Rat Tail splice, or also known as Pig Tail. Please
read what is Rat Tail splice?
This type of splice is not strong mechanically. It is suitable for
service where there is no mechanical stress when wires are to be
connected in an outlet box, switch, or conduit fitting.
What about the second picture? It is called Y-splice. Everybody
please read the definition..

Rat Tail splice is kind of splice commonly used to join

two or more conductors inside the junction box.

This splice is mostly used to connect three electrical or

component cables.
Next, we have Fixture Joint. Please read.

This method of wrapping is generally used or small

cables because the strands are flexible and all can be
wrapped in one operation.

Like the rat tail joint, the fixture joint will not stand much strain.
Then, we also have Western Union Splices. There two types of
Western Union Splice, what are those?

An electric connection between two conductors,

formed by crossing their bare ends, wrapping one
end around the other, and then folding them over.

Yes, correct. What is a Western Union Short Tie?

Western Union Short Tie and Western Union Long
Tie.
What about Western Union Long Tie splice?

This is the most widely used splice or joint in interior

wiring installation to extend the length of wire from
one point to another.

What do you think is the difference between the two? Who can
answer?

This is used extensively for outside wiring to extend

the length of wire from one end to another.

Yes, correct. Next, we have Plain Tap or also known as Tee Joint.
What is a Plain Tap?
This is used where the tap wire is under considerable tensile
stress circuit.

The difference between Western Union Short Tie and

Long Tie is that short tie has shorter number of twists
and used for interior wiring while long tie have many
number of twits because it is used for outside wiring.
This splice is used in outside work for joining a tap
wire through a conductor.

d) Analysis
Why do we need to know the different electrical splices and
joints?

e) Application
I will show you some pictures of splice and joints and everybody
must identify the name it. Are we clear?
H. Generalization
What are the different electrical wire splices and joints that we have
discussed today?

As a student in Electricity, it is important to acquire

the important knowledge and skills in wire splices and
joints and should be familiar with the actual
application of every splice and joint because this will
serve as our tool in performing actual wiring
installation.

Yes, maam.

Rat Tail splice, Y-splice, Fixture Joint, Western Union

Short Tie, Western Union Long Tie, Plain Tap
