Superbowl 50 Events
We are finalizing our plans for Super Bowl 50 which will be in the Central District.
Superbowl City will be at the foot of Market, Justin Herman Plaza, Sue Bierman
Park and on Market Street to Beale Street. The event begins on January 30, 2016
and ends on the day of the Superbowl, February 7, 2016. I will have more
information for you as we get closer to the event.

Call the Police

Quite often, people ask me about when and if they should phone the police. Please
call us when you feel that police response is necessary. We want to know what is
happening in the neighborhood and the dispatcher will decide what priority our
response should be. In an emergency dial 911. Our non-emergency phone number
is 415-553-0123.

The Central Station monthly community meeting will be on Thursday, December 17,
2015 from 6:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Hotel Rex, 562 Sutter Street. The Department

provide my crime report and field questions from the community.

SantaCon
Saturday is SantaCon in the City. It starts out as a fundraiser and toy drive in Union Square however,
thousands of people dress like Santa and go to the bars and drink. I will have extra coverage in North
Beach on Saturday to address public intoxication. Officers will enforce public intoxication and criminal
activity. This year, I have partnered with the Department of Public Health and North Beach Neighbors by
establishing a satellite sobering center in the neighborhood. For those who are intoxicated, friendly and
cooperative, they will have an opportunity to spend time with the Public Health Staff instead of the staff
at County Jail.
Polar Plunge
Central Station Officers raised $500 for the Make A Wish Foundation. Last Saturday, we also
participated as Team Central in a 5k Run, Polar Plunge in the bay at Aquatic Park and a Cable Car
pull competition. I have been participating for several years. The water was very cold!

Great Police Work

On December 5, 2015, Officer Joseph Marte prepared an incident report from a Russian Hill resident
who had their packages stolen. There was a video of the incident. Officer Marte viewed the video and
immediately recognized the suspect as someone he stopped on November 28, 2015 who was looking
into parked cars on the 1000 block of Union Street. Because of Officer Martes outstanding skills, the
suspect was identified.

The following day, Officers Marte and Thomas Cunnane (featured Officer of the Month) went to look
for the suspect and found him. They arrested him. He was in possession of burglary tools, jewelry, a
remote control, and methamphetamine. A great arrest!
On December 2, 2015, Officers Anthony Randolph and Riley Bandy saw a person who appeared to
be casing vehicles and locked bicycles on Sansome Street. They stopped and spoke with him, he told the
Officers, Come on man, I havent stolen any bikes since the last time you arrested me. Officers located
a pair of bolt cutters, wrench, plyers, screw driver, bicycle chain and grinder in his possession. He was
arrested.

Have a great weekend!

Each month Central Police Station features a citizen

who represents the unique flavor of the
Central Police District. This month we interviewed
Ida Zoubi. Ida is a board member of the
North Beach Business Association.

Ida was born in San Francisco, CA and has kept her ties with the city that she loves. Both
of Idas parents emigrated from Italy, along with her grandparents from her moms side.
You can often find Ida, with her beautiful smile, at Caf Trieste. She makes a mean
depth charge!
Idas Grandfather opened Caf Trieste on April 01, 1956. Ida spent her weekends
there as a kid because her mom would bring her to the caf when she helped out there.
Ida would run around the neighborhood as a kid and at the age of 12, her Aunt
Iolanda put her to work behind the counter of Caf Trieste.
Ida plays an integral part in the neighborhood. Every year Ida helps the San Francisco
Fire Department with their annual toy drive. Ida throws a huge party at Caf Trieste
and invites everyone from the neighborhood to participate in the toy drive; she has local
musicians there to get the party going. Ida also sells a lot of Raffle Tickets for the SFFD
Toy Drive. Ida is a huge supporter of the neighborhood and local musicians and artists;
you can often find quite a few of the local musicians at Caf Trieste playing the accordion or guitar. Ida is also a supporter of the Junior Giants.
We are extremely lucky and grateful to have Ida in the neighborhood, she has always
been a huge supporter of our department and we appreciate her support.

1. How long have you lived in San Francisco?

I have been involved with the neighborhood since I was a kid. My grandfather
opened Caf Trieste almost 60 years ago. 04/15/2016 will be our 60th
Anniversary of Caf Trieste.
2. What is your favorite thing about the Central District?
My favorite thing about the Central is the people who live here and visit here,
and the history of the district.

3. What is your connection or involvement with the Central District?

I am part owner of Caf Trieste and a board member of the North Beach
Business Association. I help with the SFFD Christmas Toy Drive every year; we
collect toys here at Caf Trieste and sell raffle tickets for the event.
4. What are some of the significant changes that you have noticed in the Central
District in the last 5 years?
I have noticed a lot more families with kids in the neighborhood now. Another
thing that I have noticed is a lot of the legacy businesses closing, like Capps
Corner and Caesars.

Page 11

Central Police Station

Each month Central Police Station features one

of its officers in an effort to learn more about the
men and women who police our neighborhood.
This month, we interviewed Officer Thomas Cunnane,
a 8-year member of Central Police Station.

Officer Thomas Cunnane is the grandson of Irish immigrants. Officer Cunnane was born
in San Francisco, CA; he grew up in San Francisco and attended Saint Ignatius High
School. After High School, Officer Cunnane joined the US Army where he was a tank
driver for three years. Officer Cunnane is still a San Francisco resident, and has raised
his kids in the city.
When Officer Cunnane returned from serving his country, he joined the SFPD Airport
Bureau. Officer Cunnane worked at the airport from 1980-1997, during that time
Officer Cunnane was part of the SWAT Team and was also a Field Training Officer. In
1997 Officer Cunnane decided to teach defensive tactics and officer safety at the
Police Academy. Officer Cunnane taught at the Police Academy until 2007. Officer
Cunnane has trained many recruits and Officers in the ten years that he was at the
academy.
After ten years of teaching, Officer Cunnane decided to leave the academy and come
to Central Station. Officer Cunnane has walked a foot beat in Union Square for the last
nine years. You can often see Officer Cunnane in the area of Union Square with his
service cap and hear his cheerful laugh.
Continues on page 12

Continued from page 11

Officer Cunnane is a seasoned Officer, who many younger Officers look up to for
advice and guidance. Officer Cunnane is also a member of the Bay Area Law
Enforcement Emerald Society. We are very fortunate to have Officer Cunnane at
Central Station, someone who truly loves and cares about this city.
