About the Workshop

To realize the vision of the future smart electric grid, enhancements are required at various levels of
existing power grid operation and control practices including integration of phasor measurement units
(PMUs). PMUs provide synchronized measurements at high rates for enhanced wide area situational
awareness and decision support using new applications. High quality of synchrophasor measurements
is vital for most of these applications, especially for real time control. Implementation of such a system
requires integration of PMUs data for situational awareness, developing new applications for
synchrophasor data utilization, and integration into control center applications. This workshop is
focused on power system engineering aspects of synchrophasor measurements, advancement in
applications and use cases for integration of PMU data in the power grid control center. This workshop
will discuss the basics of PMUs, phasor estimation, need for PMU testing, certification, review of
possible applications, synchrophasors based voltage stability application and existing related
standards. In this workshop, use cases for integration of PMU data into control center operations will be
also discussed. This workshop is highly recommended for electric utility, vendors, technical managers,
smart grid engineers, students and faculty.

Topics
This workshop provides a forum for discussing the latest findings in PMU Analytics. The topics to be
covered in more depth are the following:
Power System Operation and Control
Basics of PMUs,
Phasor estimation,
Need for PMU testing and certification,
PMU standards and compliance testing
Power System Operation and Control using Synchrophasors
Synchrophasors based voltage stability application
Review of other possible applications
Demo of tools to utilize PMU data
