1 Positioning and Characteristics

Positioning and Characteristics

1.1 Positioning
This document is intended for the SONMaster V100R014.

Background
With the development of SingleRAN and heterogeneous network (HetNet), hybrid
networking scenarios with multiple radio access technologies (RATs) have become more and
more popular. Consequently, coordination and optimization between different RATs have
become operators' crucial concerns.
To meet this challenge, Huawei has introduced the SingleSON solution, a centralized network
optimization solution for the self-organizing network (SON).

Positioning
The SONMaster is an important part of Huawei SingleSON solution. It provides the
automatic optimization for GSM, UMTS, and LTE, and automatic coordination among GSM,
UMTS, and LTE. In this way, the SONMaster improves operation and maintenance (O&M)
efficiency and lowers O&M costs.

1.2 Characteristics
Independent Deployment and Inter-Vendor Network Optimization
The SingleSON solution includes the following SON functions:

LTE D-SON on eNodeBs

Self-configuration C-SON on the U2000

Inter-RAT and inter-vendor SON functions on the SONMaster

Because of the importance of inter-RAT and inter-vendor SON functions, the SONMaster is
independently deployed and can interconnect with networks of other vendors architecturally.

1 Positioning and Characteristics

Advanced Design Platform, Large Capacity, and Phased Deployment

The SONMaster uses Huawei ATAE cluster system, which is characterized by large capacity,
high reliability, and easy capacity expansion.

Inter-RAT Coordination, Centralized SON Platform, and Low O&M Costs

The SONMaster centrally collects, analyzes, and processes call history record (CHRs) or MRs
for multiple RATs to implement inter-RAT coordination. For networks using different RATs
and multi-layer networks, the SONMaster provides a centralized SON platform to implement
automatic control. In this way, the SONMaster greatly improves the network configuration,
optimization, and maintenance efficiency and consequently decreases O&M costs.

Automatic Network Parameter Configuration and Improved O&M Efficiency

The SONMaster can detect and add neighboring cells and missing neighboring cells and
remove redundant neighboring cells.
The SONMaster can check scrambling code configurations for UMTS cells and locate cells
that use the same frequency and scrambling code. For problem cells, the SONMaster provides
recommended scrambling code configurations and delivers the configurations to the network
element (NE) in question.
The preceding operations are automated and therefore misoperations are prevented and the
network O&M efficiency is improved.

ANR

GSM ANR

GSM ANR automatically detects missing and

redundant neighboring cells. By adding missing
neighboring cells and deleting redundant
neighboring cells, GSM ANR prevents KPI
deterioration caused by inappropriate neighbor
relationships.

UMTS ANR

UMTS ANR applies to Huawei and Ericsson

networks. During ANR, missing neighboring cells
are added, redundant neighboring cells are deleted,
and neighboring cell priorities are optimized. UMTS
ANR automatically maintains the integrity and
validity of neighbor relationships within the UMTS
system, between the GSM and UMTS systems, and
between the UMTS and LTE systems.

UMTS
Neighboring Cell
Optimization for
Blind Handover

A blind handover is not measurement-based so that

it is performed without the knowledge of the signal
quality of the target cell. UMTS neighboring cell
optimization for blind handover automatically
manages neighboring cells for blind handover.

UMTS CCO

The SONMaster provides UMTS Coverage and

Capacity Optimization (CCO) for wireless networks
of Huawei and Ericsson. Based on automatic
analysis, UMTS CCO implements better coverage
and load balancing on such networks. This helps
reduce network problems caused by coverage
exceptions and load imbalance, and improve
network performance.

LTE CCO

The SONMaster provides LTE Coverage and

Capacity Optimization (CCO) for wireless networks
of Huawei and Ericsson. Based on automatic
analysis, LTE CCO implements better coverage and
load balancing on such networks. This helps reduce
network problems caused by coverage exceptions
and load imbalance, and improve network

performance.

IDO

UMTS SC
Self-Optimization

The SONMaster provides the UMTS SC

self-optimization feature, which allows optimizing
the radio access networks for Huawei and Ericsson.
UMTS SC Self-Optimization detects whether the
serving cells and their neighboring cells have SC
conflicts with the target cell based on call history
records (CHRs), engineering parameters, and the
RNC configuration parameters. Then, the
SONMaster reallocates SCs to the conflicting cells.
By optimizing scrambling codes (SCs), UMTS SC
self-optimization prevents KPI deterioration caused
by SC conflicts.

MLB

UMTS Inter-Band
MLB

The SONMaster provides the UMTS Inter-Band

MLB optimization, which allows optimizing the
radio access networks for Huawei and Ericsson.
UMTS Inter-Band MLB optimization optimizes
parameters related to idle-mode cell reselection and
directed retry decision (DRD) (or HSDPA
Inter-frequency Load Sharing). This enables UEs to
distribute in cells of different frequency bands and
resolves inter-frequency load imbalance caused by
different coverage capabilities.

UMTS Hetnet Idle

Mode MLB

UMTS Hetnet Idle Mode MLB can be achieved by

optimizing cell reselection parameters for UEs in
idle mode so that UEs are evenly distributed in
macro and micro cells.

LTE
Inter-Frequency
Idle Mode MLB

LTE Inter-Frequency Idle Mode MLB optimization

adjusts the inter-frequency reselection parameters
periodically so that UEs in idle mode distribute
appropriately among multiple frequencies. This
reduces signaling congestion caused by imbalanced
inter-frequency traffics and addresses the problem of
imbalanced usage of air interfaces.

UMTS MRO

UMTS MRO automatically analyzes and determines

whether the handover parameters are properly set
based on measurement reports (MRs), performance
call history records (PCHRs) or call history records
(CHRs), and performance parameters. If not, the
SONMaster automatically adjusts the handover
parameters. This helps reduce radio link failures
(RLFs) and unnecessary handovers.

5 Operation and Maintenance

Operation and Maintenance

5.1 Comprehensive System Security Mechanism

The SONMaster system provides a comprehensive security mechanism to ensure the system
security and the confidentiality of stored data. This mechanism works as follows:

Users can harden operating systems and databases to ensure the SONMaster system
security.

The messages exchanged between the SONMaster server and other devices are
encrypted to ensure data transmission security.

The SONMaster system protects user data, manages user rights, controls user accesses,
monitors user behavior, and periodically audits user operations with logs.

5.2 Intelligent Management of the ATAE Cluster Solution

All the boards (except the OSMU) in the ATAE cluster solution are not configured with hard
disks. The SAN Boot technique is applied to these boards to boot an operating system from
disk arrays. When a board is faulty, the SAN Boot technique maps the boot volume of the
faulty board onto a new board that replaces the faulty board to minimize the impact.
Intelligent hardware management of the OSMU works as follows:

The OSMU runs on an independent board. It centrally manages data and provides batch
operations that include batch adjustments on IP addresses, time, routes, and user
passwords and batch powering on or off of boards. In this way, the OSMU improves the
O&M efficiency.

The OSMU provides a device panel where users can check the device status in real time
and maintain devices.

The OSMU provides the centralized task management function. With this function, users
can query ongoing tasks on the OSMU in real time. In this case, users are aware of
ongoing tasks on the OSMU before performing an important operation. This prevents
redundant tasks.

The OSMU provides the internal centralized backup function. This function centrally
backs up the operating system data and static data on each service board to disk arrays.
The backup process is fast, efficient, and cost-effective.

During activation, the OSMU can automatically deploy OS software and database
software on boards.
