Discussion of Related Physics Concept

Magnetic Levitation (Maglev) is a relatively new transportation technology in which
noncontacting vehicles travel safely at speeds of 250 to 300 miles-per-hour or higher while
suspended, guided, and propelled above a guide way by magnetic fields. The guide way is
the physical structure along which maglev vehicles are levitated. Various guide way
configurations, e.g., T-shaped, U-shaped, Y-shaped, and box-beam, made of steel concrete, or
aluminum have been proposed. Electromagnetic suspension (EMS) is an attractive force
levitation system whereby electromagnets on the vehicle interact with and are attracted to
ferromagnetic rails on the guide way. EMS was made practical by advances in electronic
control systems that maintain the air gap between vehicle and guide way, thus preventing the
contact. Variations in payload weight, dynamic loads, and guide way irregularities are
compensated for by changing the magnetic field in response to vehicle or guide way air gap
measurements. Electrodynamics suspension (EDS) employs magnets on the moving vehicle
to induce currents in the guide way. Resulting repulsive force produces inherently stable
vehicle support and guidance because the magnetic repulsion increases as the vehicle or
guide way gap decreases.

Analysis of Results

Trial 1

Trial 1

Based on table 2, the researchers used the magnet 2 because it has the better height of levitation
and efficiency. The researchers used three 1 peso coins as a weight of loads and each load has
different amount of weight which is 6g, 12g, 18g respectively and each one gone through to each
trial. And after three trials for each load, the 6g load has an average of 1.6 cm height of
levitation; the 12g load has an average of 1.4 cm height of levitation; the 18g load has an average
of 1.3 cm height of levitation. 12g load has a better height of levitation than the 18g because 18g
load is a lot heavier than 12g, while 6g load has a better height of levitation than the 12 g load
because it is less heavy compare to the amount of 12g load as well at it is compare to 18g load.
Thus, the researchers concluded that adding weight to magnetic car decreases its distance to
ground yet its still able to levitate.

Answers to Questions
1. Compute the velocity of a magnetic moving object if it traveled 5 meters under 20
seconds.
Answer: .25 m/s
Conclusion

The concept of electromagnetism can be used to make a magnetic moving car. The researchers
conclude that electromagnetism can sustain certain amount of loads and still function
properly. The concept of electromagnetism can be used to make a magnetic moving car. Based on
the table 1, magnet 1 has a 1.6 cm average of height levitation and magnet 2 has a 1.7 cm
average of height levitation. The researchers were able to prove that electromagnetism can be
used in cars.
