Uraduct

Uraduct is a patented product designed

and developed by Trelleborg CRP. It has
established an enviable reputation as an
industry standard for cable and flowline
protection. An intensive investment
programme has resulted in Uraduct
becoming the universal protection system
for fibre optic cables, power cables,
umbilicals, flexible flowlines, rigid flowlines,
hoses and bundled products.
In areas where additional protection is
required, e.g. rocky seabeds, touchdown
locations, shore landings or cable/pipeline
crossings, Uraduct provides a high
performance technical and cost -effective
protection solution in comparison to
alternative methods such as rock dumping
or concrete mattressing.
Uraduct comprises of cylindrical half - shells
moulded in a range of thicknesses
from the most applicable grade of high
performance polyurethane (see pages 16
& 17 for material specifications). The
half - shells overlap and interlock to form
close fitting protection around the core
product. For ease of handling and
transportation, Uraduct is manufactured
in lengths of up to 2.0m with flexing
characteristics to suit the required
minimum bend radius of the product or
ancillary shipboard lay equipment.
Uraduct, a custom made system, is
manufactured to suit the core product with
internal diameters ranging from 15mm up
to 950mm.
Recent innovation programmes and client
requests have lead to a number of key
product developments in the Uraduct
range. Trelleborg CRP now offer a multi-fit
Uraduct design which will accommodate
a larger range of core product sizes. This
solution assists clients in situations where
exact core product sizes are likely to vary
or are unknown.

The half - shells are secured in place using

pre-cut corrosion resistant banding (see
pages 14 & 15). The banding is located in
recessed grooves that not only ensure a
smooth external profile allowing passage
through cable engines etc, but also
eliminates the need to measure the band
spacing. The assembly of the system is
quick and efficient being applied
simultaneously with product installation.
This is a major benefit in weather
dependent industries such as the oil and
gas and submarine telecommunications
industries.
Uraduct also differs from many alternative
protection methods in that it becomes an
integral part of the cable or pipeline and
is a fully tested system with a proven
track record, details of which can be
supplied on request - Trelleborg CRP is
Proven to Perform.

Extensive use in the oil and gas industry by

most leading oil companies has made
Uraduct the automatic choice for aiding
crossing acceptance where submarine
telecommunication cables or power cables
cross existing pipelines or cables. Uraduct
has been specified on an ever increasing
range of projects, from flexible riser
touchdown over coral seabeds to
protection of small fibre optic cables where
burial cannot be achieved.
Although Uraduct was originally designed
for harsh offshore conditions; many of
Trelleborg CRPs customers appreciate how
the protection properties of Uraduct can
also meet the needs of land based projects
where operating conditions can be just as
onerous. No other protection method can
deliver the level of all round protection
combined with the economic benefits
associated with a Uraduct installation.

Uraduct +

In response to client requests and for

applications where pipelines or cables are
to be subject to high levels of abrasion,
Trelleborg CRP has developed Uraduct +,
which is considered to be the ultimate
protection solution. Flexible pipes, power
cables and fibre optic cables can be
protected in any area where abrasion is
considered to be a problem and
stabilisation cannot be achieved. This
includes pipeline touchdown locations,
rocky areas and shore landings.
Uraduct + is moulded in Trelleborg CRPs
super abrasion resistant elastomer (see
pages 16 and 17 for material specification)
and offers all the characteristics of
standard Uraduct with the added benefit
of encapsulating the securing bands to
prevent premature wear or abrasion of the
banding itself.

The polyurethane half - shell mouldings are

supplied in loose pre-assembled pairs, with
the securing bands fully encapsulated
within the body of the PU protection
system, with the exception of the seal
arrangement. Uraduct+ is installed onto
the pipeline or cable in pairs, with the
socket and spigot overlapping and
interlocking each pair of mouldings in the
assembly. The socket and spigots are
designed with a dove tail arrangement,
ensuring full system integrity when subject
to bending, during either installation or
service.
Uraduct + is secured in place by 32mm
wide x 0.8mm thick Alloy 625 banding. The
same pneumatic band tools as used for
standard Uraduct are employed to
tension, crimp and cut the bands, allowing
for quick and simple installation.

The protection system is also designed to

allow for the removal of the securing bands
and replacement with new securing bands
in the event that the protection system is
to be removed and reinstalled on to a new
riser system.
Uraduct + has undergone full factory
testing to ensure that it is fully qualified to
meet the stringent requirements laid down
by its clients.
Whilst utilising materials that have been
field proven over a number of years, this
innovative design has now taken cable and
pipeline protection to new levels. No other
product on the market can match
Trelleborg CRPs Uraduct +.
Trelleborg CRP is Proven to Perform.

Uraduct -

Retrofit riser system

In response to the increasing number of

additional cables requiring access to and
from offshore platforms, Trelleborg CRP
developed the Uraduct Retrofit Riser
System, which comprises of Uraduct and
dedicated, high integrity, locating clamps.
This system provides a very cost-effective
solution where cable access to a platform
is not possible via existing J or I tubes.
Prior to Trelleborg CRPs Uraduct Retrofit
Riser System the only alternative was to
install new steel J or I tubes at great
expense, compounded with time
consuming and problematic installation.

With the introduction of the Uraduct

Retrofit Riser System, substantial cost
savings along with improved installation
times have resulted in a number of projects
coming to fruition which previously would
not have been possible.

The securing clamps for this system are

designed to withstand the extreme
conditions experienced on offshore
installations, and can be configured to suit
multiple cables. Under normal circumstances
the clamps are pre-installed onto a suitable
platform leg or structure at regular
intervals, the spacing being dependent on
the security required. Alternative clamp
designs are available where multiple
cables are to be installed. The clamp
bodies are manufactured from a high
performance, rigid, marine grade
polyurethane elastomer. No special welding
equipment is required as the clamp bases
are secured by means of a Polyloop high
strength Kevlar/EVA coated strap and a
highly corrosion resistant metallic
tensioning assembly, typically
manufactured in Zeron 100 or titanium.
Trelleborg CRPs Uraduct Retrofit Riser
System has been successfully installed on
platforms off the coast of Trinidad, in the
Gulf of Arabia, and in the North Sea.
This trend is set to grow with particular
relevance to submarine fibre optic cables
and inter-platform power cables - Trelleborg
CRP is Proven to Perform.

VIV Suppression
In deepwater riser applications, the use of
steel catenary risers (SCRs) is increasing.
These risers can be subject to the complex
phenomenon of Vortex Induced Vibration (VIV).

VIV is caused by the regular shedding of

vortices in the wake behind a pipe in
steady current. The flow naturally locks
in to shed these vortices in the same
pattern at the same frequency along a
significant length of pipe. This lock in is
measured by the spanwise coherence and
can cause the pipe to vibrate.
VIV causes accelerated fatigue damage
and can give rise to problems such as pipe
girth weld failure or premature pipe failure.
Other applications prone to VIV are rigid
steel flowlines unsupported over free
spans and major deepwater field
developments requiring a large number of
thermally insulated pipelines etc.
Trelleborg CRP have recognised this
increasingly common problem and to
suppress the damaging vibration forces to
an acceptable level have put together a
comprehensive analytical, design and
engineering package complete with a
number of highly successful VIV
suppression products.

Trelleborg CRP analyse each potential

VIV problem using specially developed
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
software and use the results to assist in
the design and verification of a strake to
suit the application.
For existing lines a VIV suppression system
can be retrofitted by divers or by Remotely
Operated Vehicles (ROVs) in deepwater.
When Trelleborg CRPs suppression
strakes are applied, the VIV system profile
practically eliminates periodic vortex
shedding from risers and flowlines.
Trelleborg CRP VIV suppression systems
are made to order and can accommodate
any likely riser/flowline diameter. The
system has been supplied to suit a
pipeline outer diameter of up to 924mm
to date.
Trelleborg CRP VIV Suppression Solutions
incorporate the following products:

Uraduct VIV Suppression Strakes

Trelleborg CRPs VIV suppression strakes
combine the benefits of traditional Uraduct
cable and flowline protection with an
effective VIV suppression profile. The
product is manufactured in marine grade
polyurethane as two single split line
mouldings and is easily installable utilising
the well proven overlapping and
interlocking concept.

ROV Installable Strakes

Designed to established Trelleborg CRP
design standards for VIV suppression
strakes, Trelleborg CRP ROV installable
strake covers are high performance
composite covers with an attachable
polymer strake profile incorporating the
field proven hinge and ratchet locking
mechanism (ROR - Remote Operated
Ratchet) which allows the ROV to handle,
open and securely close the covers around
the pipeline. The covers are designed to be
installed safely and efficiently in water
depths to suit the deepest rated ROVs.

Fairings

ROV Installable Strakes

As part of Trelleborg CRPs VIV

suppression development programme, a
patented fairing system has been
introduced as the latest in the VIV
suppression product line. The fairing
module is fixed onto the riser by a system
of hinged clamps which allow the module
to freely rotate around the riser to align
with the current flow and shed the
damaging vortices.

Fairings

Integral Strakes
Trelleborg CRP are able to mould strake
profiles into any of its products during
manufacture. This is ideally suited for
Trelleborg CRP thermal insulation shells,
where a strake can be moulded in to
provide effective VIV suppression.

The Trelleborg CRP VIV suppression

system functions by introducing threedimensionality into the flow. This disrupts
the spanwise coherence of vortices that
might be shed, leaving the wake stable
and steady.

The software is an invaluable tool during

the fine tuning of a VIV system design.
It provides the optimal balance of drag
and vortex suppression utilising the
given environmental data for each
specific project.

To assist in the optimisation of a solution

for any given project, Trelleborg CRP has
invested heavily in specialised
Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD)
software to obtain a comprehensive
understanding of the required geometry
and calculate the best strake profile for
a VIV suppression system.

Trelleborg CRP will also verify or comply

with customers own strake designs to
produce a bespoke system.

The analysis has been supported by wet

tank and model testing and forms part of
a continuous programme of product
development.

350mm clearance at crossings

When laying subsea cables there is often

a requirement to maintain a positive
clearance between cables and existing
pipelines at crossing points. Methods such
as pre-lay rock dumping, concrete
mattressing and steel structures are
expensive, time consuming and difficult to
place accurately. These options may also
be unacceptable to the pipeline owner.
As a solution, Trelleborg CRP has
developed Polyspace, a product that
generates a 350mm clearance between
the cable and pipeline. This system is
flexible and comprises of interlocking
hollow half-shells fastened around the
cable by a combination of corrosion
resistant metallic banding and sacrificial
banding. The half-shells are manufactured
from UV stable, marine grade, high density
polyethylene which has good impact
strength and abrasion resistance. Each
moulding is free flooding and can be
supplied with a ballast system to provide
up to 90kg/m of additional submerged
weight to suit the application.

Polyspace is installed onto the cable as

it is deployed from the cableship at the
crossing location. Internal cable clamps
are used to lock the Polyspace mouldings
onto the cable at regular intervals.
Leading and trailing bending stiffeners
can also be included with the system to
prevent the cable exceeding the
recommended minimum bend radius at any
time during installation or retrieval.
Polyspace provides an innovative, cost
effective solution at pipeline crossings
where clearance is required. As this
system becomes an integral part of the
cable, additional problems associated with
installing over a pre-laid bridge or
separator are negated. This is in addition
to the obvious benefits of no pre-lay
operations and the associated costs this
would entail.

Polymat
Polymat is a useful, ROV installable mat
that provides general protection and
stabilisation to cables and pipelines. The
mat is sized and weighted to suit client
requirements and ROV capabilities.
Polymat is moulded from Trelleborg
CRPs marine grade polyurethane
material (see page 16). It also incorporates
a barytes infill that provides additional
ballast to aid product stability on the seabed.
Although the size of each Polymat can be
tailored to suit client requirements typical
deep water applications require mats that are
circa 2.3m long x 1.5m wide x 25mm thick.

Spiraduct+
The Spiraduct+ system is designed to
provide an additional protective layer for
impact and abrasion protection for subsea
cables, umbilicals and other tubulars.
Spiraduct+ consists of discrete cylindrical
sections manufactured in marine grade
rubber and cut to form a spiral wrap.
Installation simply involves opening the
helix and winding it around the cable. This
makes Spiraduct+ particularly suited to
installation by diver.
Spiraduct+ is also suited to providing
temporary cable protection; for example,
preventing abrasion at the cableship
sheave during a cable repair. It can also be
utilised for short runs of cable liable to
impact or abrasion e.g. ROV or plough
control umbilicals.
Spirawrap is suitable for small diameter
cables up to 100mm OD and where tight
bend radii of up to 0.5m can be expected.

Polymat is moulded with grooves on one

side to allow the mat to flex and closely fit
the profile of the cable or pipeline.

For ease of handling, holes are moulded

along the edges of each Polymat to allow
attachment for pickup ropes etc.

11

Alloy 625
Alloy 625 is a nickel-chromium alloy
containing molybdenum. Exhibiting high
tensile strength and excellent anticorrosion properties, it is especially
resistant to crevice corrosion.
The tensile properties of Alloy 625 enable
it to be used in high load applications
Whether in marine, subsea or chemical
environments.

Stainless Steel
Stainless Steel (316) banding is suitable
for medium duty installations, typically
within the automotive, food and
pharmaceutical industries or medium
term installations in seawater.

Carbon Steel
Carbon steel is a cost - effective alternative
for use in non-corrosive environments or
temporary applications. Carbon Steel
offers high tensile strength and is often
used within the packaging industry or as a
temporary installation aid in a Subsea or
Marine environment.

Titanium

Non-Metallic Banding

Titanium combines an outstanding strength

to weight ratio with excellent anti-corrosion
properties, making it ideally suited to small
diameter yet heavy duty banding
applications. Titanium exhibits exceptional
resistance to corrosive attack from salt
water, acids, alkalis and industrial
chemicals.

For less arduous applications, Trelleborg

CRP also supply a non-metallic strapping
system, which combines a separate strap
and low profile seal.

Kevlar
For extreme high load conditions Trelleborg
CRP offers a wide range of Kevlar
strapping systems with nominal breaking
loads of between 5Te and 12.5Te. Each
strap is precisely manufactured to length
and supplied complete with a high strength
tensioning assembly. Metallic tensioning
assemblies are supplied in alternative
metallic grades to suit system design life.

Both band and seal are manufactured from

a glass filled Nylon 11 material which
exhibits excellent resistance in the most
corrosive environments, in particular
seawater.
The seal has been designed with a smooth
low profile, minimising the risk of snagging
on a third party object. The band is
efficiently installed using either manual or
pneumatic tooling.

Installation Tooling
To simplify the banding operation,
Trelleborg CRP offers a range of manual
and semi-automatic banding tools available
for hire. All Trelleborg CRP tools are
meticulously maintained and serviced to
ensure they will function reliably, even in
the most difficult conditions. To aid service
turn-around a comprehensive stock of
spares are held on-site and these are
backed up by a detailed database that
tracks the current location of each tool - to
ensure our tools are available wherever
and whenever they are required.

Marine grade polyurethane

High density polyurethane

This is the industry standard material for

Uraduct offering excellent abrasion and
mechanical protection for a wide range of
applications in a cost-effective manner.
This material has a specific gravity of
1.18g/cm 3 and therefore does not add any
significant weight to the full installation
once immersed.

Where additional stability and ballast is

required, specially formulated high density
polyurethane is available. This material has
a specific gravity of 2.3g/cm3 and offers an
equivalent in-water weight to concrete.
Uraduct manufactured in this grade of
polyurethane can be utilised where cables
will be exposed to strong seabed currents
and additional weight and stability will be
beneficial.

Super heavy weight Uraduct

Buoyant/Thermal grade

In addition to the individual polyurethane

compounds mentioned, Trelleborg CRP has
developed a super heavyweight Uraduct
that combines the excellent abrasion
resistant qualities of the high abrasion
resistant polyurethane with the added
weight of lead.

For applications where additional buoyancy

is required, a buoyant grade of
polyurethane is available with a SG of
approximately 0.7g/cm3. Uraduct
manufactured from this material has been
used to provide impact and abrasion
protection on cable pull-in operations to
reduce the pulling forces required by
providing a reduced combined Uraduct and
cable weight per metre. This elastomer
also exhibits thermal insulation properties
where hydrocarbon temperatures need to
be maintained on rigid and flexible
pipelines.

Lead inserts are encapsulated in each

Uraduct half-shell during the moulding
process. This is done in such a way as to
maintain the flexibility of standard
Uraduct. The ratio of lead to polyurethane
can be varied to give an average SG of
3g/cm3 and above. This product is ideal for
stabilising submarine fibre optic cables at
crossings, for shore landings, and for
touch down ballast of umbilicals or flexible
risers, and in general for areas where
strong seabed currents are expected. The
added stability due to the weight and high
abrasion characteristics of the polyurethane
delivers a Uraduct system that can be
applied in the most demanding locations.

Super abrasion resistant

polyurethane
Where the installation requirements call for
a very high level of abrasion resistance,
dynamic contact with coral or rocky
outcrops for example, very high abrasion
resistant polyurethane is available. With a
similar SG to standard grade material of
1.15g/cm3, this polyurethane can be
utilised, not only to provide excellent
impact protection, but also to extend the
life of the core product in areas where
specific abrasion problems have been
recognised.

Special grades and colours

Generally, standard grade polyurethane is
supplied in orange, high density in
mustard, super heavyweight in black and
buoyant/thermal grade in yellow. Trelleborg
CRP are also constantly researching and
developing special polyurethanes to satisfy
the evolving requirements of our customers.
For specific projects, Uraduct can be
manufactured using a variety of harder or
softer grades of polyurethane to suit.
