Abstract
The study of the Impact of Modern Development towards the Adaptation of Folk Fishery
Community in Bann Koh Yao Pu Yu sub - district, Mueang district, Satun province was aimed to study the
folk / local fisheries and environmental factors of natural resources, socio- cultural economy which led to
situation of adaptation in local fisheries community under the modern development. The study was
conducted by qualitative method which included Participant and Non Participant Observation, in - depth
interviews, and focus group discussion. The key informants were consisted of community elders, village
philosophers, community leaders, religious leaders, and fishermen of the community who have adapted
their community effected from modern development.
The result showed that the adaptation process effected from the development of Bann Koh Yao
has made the villagers to adapt the learning process to their area which were confronting the problems
of social system, economy, culture, natural resources and new fishery technique that were part of
development and to support as well as to promote the villagers in emerging their participatory learning
process leading to the pattern of potential adaptation based on their original path. This would be
relevant to the new way of adaptation on villagers potentials. It was mainly by adapting holistically the
knowledge from local wisdom of community belief, values and tradition which obtained from the
experiences leading to the survival and efficiently local fishery under the main stream of modern
development within the dynamic capitalism era. The adaptation occurred in such fishery community
could be classified into 3 following aspects: the adaptation in local fishery, the adaptation in natural
resources of the community and the socio - cultural adaptation.
