Assessing Student Learning using ActivExpression
Grade Levels: K-5
Curriculum Areas: All
Technology Academy Overview: This workshop will help teachers to design and
develop learning experiences that quickly assess students learning with the digital tool,
ActivExpression.
ISTE-T Standards:

Standard 2: Design and develop digital age learning experiences and


assessments
Teachers design, develop, and evaluate authentic learning experiences and
assessment incorporating contemporary tools and resources to maximize content
learning in context and to develop the knowledge, skills, and attitudes identified
in the StandardsS.
a. Design or adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools
and resources to promote student learning and creativity
b. Develop technology-enriched learning environments that enable all
students to pursue their individual curiosities and become active
participants in setting their own educational goals, managing their own
learning, and assessing their own progress
c. Customize and personalize learning activities to address students diverse
learning styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and
resources
d. Provide students with multiple and varied formative and summative
assessments aligned with content and technology standards, and use

Learning Outcomes: At the conclusion of this workshop, participants will be able to:
1. Register ActivExpression devices and navigate the poll express tool in the
ActivInspire software
2. Download flipcharts/templates from Promethean Planet to provide students with
multiple and varied assessments aligned with content and technology standards
3. Create original questions using the ActivInspire software
4. Export data collected from ActivExpression into Excel, and review resulting data
to inform learning and teaching
5. Identify and describe how ActivExpression can be utilized to assess student
learning

1. Introduce the agenda and remind participants that we will remain on task to keep
the presentation within the allotted hour
2. Display PowerPoint presentation on Activboard
3. Have participants login to their workstations and sign in or sign up on

Send pre-workshop survey to participants via school email addresses
Introduce ISTE-T standards and discuss how they impact students learning
Discuss Learning outcomes of the workshop
Introduce ActivExprsssion and show YouTube video linked in the PowerPoint
Distribute handout on how to register ActivExpression devices. Demonstrate

process by having participants register their devices


9. Allow time for participants to find premade flipcharts on Promethean Planet that
include assessments and have them download the flipcharts to their computers.
10. Distribute handout on how to create questions. Have participants open a new
flipchart and work along while explaining the steps of creating a question.
11. Discuss the process of editing a premade question being the same. Allow time for
participants to go back to premade flipchart and practice editing a question.
12. Distribute handout on the express poll wheel. Explain how to use
ActivExpression on the fly with questions not created in ActivInspire.
13. Distribute handout on how to export data collected from ActivExpression to
Microsoft Excel. Discuss the steps with an example by having the participants to
complete a question using ActivExpression. Display the process of exporting the
data.
14. Discuss next steps. Have participants to turn to their neighbor and discuss how
ActivExpression could be used in their classroom. Ask them to discuss a plan to
introduce the tool to their students. After 5 minutes ask the participants to share
their idea/plans as a group.
15. Send post-workshop survey via school email addresses.
Evaluation/Assessment:
The instructor will assess the participants informally throughout the duration
of the workshop. Guidance and redirection will be provided to participants
that need assistance completing any of the tasks. The instructor will analyze
data collected from the pre-workshop survey and post-workshop survey to
formally evaluate the success of the workshop. Instructor will follow-up with
participants periodically to check on their progress with implementing
ActivExpressions.
