También en Sydney, Australia, se puso
recientemente en marcha la iniciativa co-
nocida como “The Bike Bus”, con rutas y
tiempos predeterminados para concen-
trar un gran grupo de “pasajeros” y pro-
porcionarles atención y protección en los
cruceros conflictivos.
During the present year, several events “THE BICYCLE´S BOOM“
organized by the League of American Bi-
cyclists- whose mission is to turn America
into a two-wheel vehicle-friendly country-
will be taking place. On its web page www.
bikeleague.org, you can find programs, li-
terature and promotional material that will
be both useful and interesting if you are
thinking about contributing to reduce the
traffic and air-quality problems suffered by
large cities, besides working-out and mee-
ting people with similar tastes.
Also recently, in Sydney, Australia, the
so-known initiative “The Bike Bus” was
launched, with routes and predetermined
times to gather a large group of “passen-
gers” and provide them with service and
protection in dangerous junctions.

la batería del dispositivo se recargue gra-
cias al movimiento de cabeza del usuario.
El acumulador de energía consiste en un
pequeño volante en un campo magné-
tico, que al rotar genera corriente. Nos
queda sólo una duda, ¿Habrá que estar
asintiendo o negando constantemente?

PLANETA A SU SALUD?
Oleg Shumilov del Instituto de Problemas Ecológicos Indus-
triales en Rusia, encontró recientemente que la actividad del
campo magnético de la tierra puede ser determinante en el
comportamiento de los moradores en múltiples aspectos, in-
cluyendo la tasa de suicidios.
En un estudio realizado al respecto entre 1948 y 1997, se
identificaron picos agrupables en ciertos periodos, que al ser
comparados con las estadísticas de suicidios en la ciudad rusa
de Kirovsk, mostraron tendencias similares.
Otros problemas de salud como el funcionamiento cardiovas-
cular y la depresión han sido así mismo vinculados al fenóme-
no, concluyéndose que entre el 10 y el 15% de la población re-
sulta afectada tras una tormenta magnética. Hasta el momento
se cree que la causa pudiera ser que el fenómeno provoca la
desestabilización del ritmo cardiaco y la producción de mela-
tonina, aunque se espera profundizar al respecto en estudios
posteriores.

Problems in Russia recently found out that the earth’s magnetic
field activity could be decisive to its inhabitants’ behavior in many
ways, including the suicide rate.
Research carried out between 1948 and 1950 on the subject iden-
tified group peaks in certain periods that, upon being compared
to suicide statistics in the Russian city of Kirovsk, showed similar
tendencies.
Other health problems like cardiovascular function and depres-
sion have also been linked to this phenomenon, concluding that
between 10 and 15% of the population is affected after an electro-
magnetic storm. At the moment, it is believed that the reason could
be that such a phenomenon causes destabilization of the heart
rhythm and the production of melatonin, although additional in-
vestigation on the subject is required.

un videojuego que estará a la venta en este 2009 e introduce a
padres y niños en el ejercicio y hábitos alimenticios saludables.
El formato está lleno de gráficas y ligero en texto para atraer
la atención de los pequeños y lograr un cambio de comporta-
miento. Los jugadores interactúan con Deejay, Delinda y otros
amigos; toman decisiones y aprenden las consecuencias en los
personajes que tratan de escapar de un mundo lleno de comida
chatarra e inactividad.

British company “Reaction Engines” is planning to build a hyper-

sonic plane for 300 passengers. Supported by the European Com-
mission and the European Space Agency (ESA), the aircraft would
use an engine impelled by liquid hydrogen, an ordinary fuel in
spacecrafts, which will allow a flight autonomy of 20,000 km, with
a speed of 6000 km/hr.
Brussels-Sydney, a journey made nowadays in 20 hours, could be
reduced to only four and a half hours; nevertheless, there are still
so many technical issues to be resolved, so it is expected that this
artifact will be ready in no less than two decades. As an advance,
they say it won’t be comfortable for claustrophobics, because the
A2 will travel so fast that it‘s won’t be possible for it to have safe
enough windows.

del cacao lo sitúan hoy en día como pro-
tagonista en balnearios, salas de SPA y
estéticas de todo el mundo.
La historia del cacao se remonta al Méxi-
co prehispánico. En la civilización azteca
era conocido como “Xocolatl” y se acos-
tumbraba tomarlo en fiestas, sacrificios,
eventos deportivos, ritos de iniciación
religiosa y al final de las comidas, siendo
considerado un alimento divino, pues de
acuerdo a la leyenda, Quetzalcóatl, rey

Hispanic México. In the Aztec civilization,

valor de moneda legal.

much, if his spirit is weary, if he feels humid
air, slow hours and a heavy-to-bear atmo-
sphere; if he is so obsessed with a fixed idea
that can not freely think, if he is one of those
unfortunate creatures, let’s tell him to drink
a perfumed chocolate cup and wonderful
things will happen to him”.
Nevertheless, our appreciation for choco-
late has gone through numerous fluctua-
tions. Counting calories, so frequent in our
days, has caused an association of guilt
with its excessive consumption; that is why
its extensive use in our body involves an un-
foreseen delight to our sight and smell.

Sin embargo, nuestro aprecio por el
chocolate ha pasado por numerosas fluc-
tuaciones. El recuento de calorías tan
común en nuestros días ha provocado la
asociación de culpa a su consumo excesi-
vo, por lo que su uso extenso en nuestro
cuerpo supone un deleite inesperado a
nuestra vista y olfato.
En muchos países orientales los masa-
jes a base de chocolate ocupan un lugar
de privilegio, y los científicos y compa-
ñías cosméticas descubren cada día be-
neficios adicionales que se pueden lograr
con la singular terapia.
El cacao es rico en polifenoles, de la
familia de los flavonoides que reducen
la inflamación de los vasos y mejoran la
circulación sanguínea y linfática. Posee
también propiedades reafirmantes, esti-
mula la elaboración natural de colágeno
y refuerza las fibras elásticas que mantie-
nen piel y músculos en su sitio, hidratán-
dolos y tonificándolos para combatir la
celulitis y la formación de estrías.
Sus semillas abundan en xantina y teo-
bromina, oxigenadores de tejidos y an-
tioxidantes que ayudan a conservar la
integridad de las células y a mitigar las
reacciones alérgicas.
Vasto en proteínas, hidratos de carbo-

teriormente llevar a cabo un “masaje de
drenaje” con chocolate y crema batida,
aceite de almendras o esencia de naranja
que ayudan a eliminar la retención de lí-
quidos y a descongestionar la piel.
El chocolate que consumimos habitual-
mente no es el mismo que se ocupa en la
terapia, para la que se utiliza 100% cacao
que aunque podría ingerirse, resultaría
amargo en extremo, característica que
se elimina al adicionar leche, manteca y
endulzantes.
Aún cuando podría considerarse un
lujo, no está tan lejos de todos. Una se-
sión de dos horas puede rondar los 1000
o 1200 pesos, aunque el precio varía de-
pendiendo del lugar a donde se acuda
al tratamiento o de lo extenso de éste, y
con seguridad los sentidos agradecerán
el gasto una vez exhaustos de sabores y
aromas.

In our country, the places renowned as
ideal for scuba-diving are the beaches of Ve-
racruz, the Sea of Cortés, Cozumel, Tulúm,
the Riviera Maya, Puerto Escondido, Los Ca-
bos, La Paz, Isla Mujeres, Cancún and Aca-
pulco, amongst others.
The sites range from reefs and sacred
cenotes (natural water wells), to crystal
clear waters whose colourfulness, comes
from the mineral mix of its sand. The choice
also depends on the season of the year, be-
cause diving is recommended in warm wa-
ter, free of dangerous marine currents.

Apnea and Scuba techniques with air be-

Sport diving generally has a limit of 40 me-
ters deep, while professional allows depths
of 100 meters or more. It is based on the
storage of pressed air in a bottle carried by
the diver, from which he breathes during a
considerable period of autonomy. Besides
the basic equipment, a harness, a flotation
mechanism, a safety valve and ballast sys-
tem, tubes and nozzle, several “watches”
to know the depth and the amount of avai-
lable air are also required.
Snorkelling is swimming under the water
surface, equipped only with a plastic tube
called “snorkel” and flippers. The combina-
tion of these tools allows the practitioner
to observe underwater attractions for pro-
longed periods of time with very mild effort.
Presently, it is a frequent leisure activity, es-
pecially at tropical hotels.
The Sea of Cortés
Home to hundreds of species adapted to
different habitats like tidelands, swamps
and rock lands with nutrients that give life
to crabs, prawns, clams, snails, algae, gud-
geons, catfish, octopus and animals that

the National Marine Park of Chankanaab
is one of the most important reserves in
the country. “Pequeño Mar” or Laguna
de Chankanaab is connected to the ocean
through two underground caverns, where
exotic and fascinating species can be seen
in the special type of “cavern diving”. Life
around the lagoon is also meaningful and
important, and stone corals inside are in-
valuable.
Tulum
The magical aquatic park of Xel-ha is one
the major attractions of the zone. Snorkel-
ling in underground caves and natural
wells make it possible to amaze before a
great diversity of marine species; there are
also other amusing activities like swim-
ming with dolphins, ecotourism, travelling
through chaac swamps and exploring the
Mayan sacred cenotes.

El mágico parque acuático de Xel-ha

norqueleando en cuevas subterráneas y

ecotours, recorrer los manglares chaac y
explorar los sagrados cenotes mayas.
Dentro de la reserva ecológica Sian
Kaan, el visitante puede observar colo-
nias de manatíes (especie en peligro de
extinción), practicar la pesca deportiva
en Boca Paila y deslizarse en kayak en
Punta Allen. Dos Ojos, es un bello rincón
de la naturaleza situado a 13 kilómetros
de Tulum, con aguas de imponente color
turquesa ideales para nadar, bucear y es-
norquelear.
Riviera Maya
El Parque Marino Arrecifes de Puerto
Morelos fue declarado área natural pro-
tegida por el gobierno federal en 1998,
y su gran arrecife de coral es hoy un
parque nacional que cuenta con una es-
pectacular biodiversidad marina. Se han
identificado más de 600 especies, 264 ti-
pos de algas, delfines, tortugas y corales,
aunque se cree que alberga mucha más
vida marina aún no explorada.
La laguna Nichupte ostenta cada día,
los mejores y más asombrosos atardece-
res en México, es alimentada de aguas
marinas a través de los canales Sigfrido y
Nizuc y se encuentra rodeada por hermo-
sos manglares.
Cabo San Lucas
En la punta sur de Los Cabos, visitado
por cruceros y yates todo el año, es uno
de los destinos favoritos de los buceado-
res por sus playas de belleza natural in-
comparable entre las que se encuentran,
Playa Médano, muy concurrida, Playa
del Amor, muy tranquila y la bahía San-
ta María. El corredor turístico, que va de
San Lucas a San José por un espectacular
paisaje desértico virgen, tiene a lo largo
de sus 32 kilómetros, soberbias playas,
los mejores hoteles y magníficos campos
de golf. Lo que no puede perderse el vi-
sitante son las cascadas de arena, el arco
de roca y esnorquelear en el crucero “El
Pez Gato”.

The Arrecifes of Puerto Morelos Marine
Park was declared a protected natural area
by the federal government in 1998, and its
great coral reef is today a national park
with spectacular marine biodiversity. More
than 600 species have been identified, 264
algae, dolphins, turtles and corals, although
it is believed that there is still vast marine
life to be explored. Everyday Lake Nichupte
offers the best and most astonishing sun-
sets in México; it is fed with marine waters
through the Sigfrido and Nizuc channels
and is surrounded by beautiful mangrove
swamps.
Cabo San Lucas
In the south end of Los Cabos, visited by
cruise ships and yatches all year long, is one
of the favourite diving destinations due to
its natural beauty beaches, like Playa Mé-
dano, wich is very crowded; Playa del Amor,
very quiet and Santa María Bay. The tour-
ist corridor goes from San Lucas to San José
through a spectacular virgin-dessert land-
scape, and offers throughout its 32 kilome-
ters, superb beaches, the best hotels and
wonderful golf courses. What the visitor
shouldn’t miss are the sand cascades, the
rock arch and snorkelling at the cruise ship
“El Pez Gato”.

s u origen como corriente arquitectó-

nica se atribuye a Ludwig Mies Vom
Der Rohe que en la década de los 30 con-
cretó sus ideas acerca de la pureza de
las formas mientras se hacía cargo de la
dirección de la Escuela de Arte y Diseño
Bauhaus en Alemania. Con motivo de la
Segunda Guerra Mundial, emigra a los
Estados Unidos, adquiriendo la ciudada-
nía norteamericana y participando hacia
los años 60 en el movimiento de arte mí-
nimo en las artes visuales en Nueva York,
resumiendo su concepto de simplicidad,
geometría, maestría en las proporciones,
elegancia en los materiales y precisión
en los detalles, en el que hasta ahora se
considera el lema del vanguardista movi-
miento, “Menos es más”.
Sin embargo, es al crítico y filósofo
británico Richard Wolheim, a quién se
atribuye, el haber utilizado por prime-
ra vez el término minimal en 1965, para
referirse a las pinturas de Ad Reinhardt
que presentaban una radical reducción
racionalista en las nuevas tendencias ar-
tísticas. Desde entonces, la corriente se
ha expandido y adecuado, instalándose
perdurablemente en la música, la escul-
tura, la pintura, el diseño, la arquitectura
y la moda.
En el mundo de la música, la primera
composición considerada minimalista
fue “In C” de Terry Riley, hacia media-
dos de los 60’s, a la que siguieron en los
años siguientes las obras de Steve Reich
y Philip Glass entre otros, compartiendo
con la demás manifestaciones de arte, la
simplicidad de los medios y la aversión al
detalle ornamental.
En el campo pictórico aparece como
reacción al expresionismo abstracto, con
influencia del compositor John Cage, del
poeta William Carlos Williams y del ar-
quitecto Frederick Law Olmsted; los ras-
gos incluyeron desde el principio formas
rectangulares y cúbicas, igualdad o sime-
tría, repetición, superficies neutras, ma-
teriales industriales y grandes formatos,
todo ello con el fin de generar un inme-
diato impacto visual.

Minimalism

When less is more

i ts origin as an architectural current is at-

tributed to Ludwig Mies Vom Der Rohe,
who in the thirties concreted his ideas
about the purity of the forms while he was
in charge of the direction of the Bauhaus
School of Arts and Design in Germany. Due
to the Second World War, he migrated to
the United States, acquiring the North
American citizenship and participating dur-
ing the sixties in the movement of minimal
art in visual arts in New York, summarizing
his concept of simplicity and precision in the
details, in which up till now is considered
the motto of the avant-garde movement:
“Less is more”.
Nonetheless, it’s to British critic and phi-
losopher Richard Wolheim, to whom it is
attributed, having used for the first time
the term “minimal” in 1965 to refer to Ad
Reinhardt’s paintings, which presented a
radical rational reduction in the new artistic
trends. Since then, the current has extended
and adapted, persisting in music, sculpture,
painting, design, architecture and fashion.
In the world of music, the first composi-
tion considered minimalist was “In C” by
Terry Riley, around the mid-sixties, which
was followed during the next years by Steve
Reich’s and Philip Glass’ works, amongst
others, sharing with other art expressions
the simplicity of media and aversion to or-
namental detail.
In the field of painting, it appears as a
reaction to abstract expressionism, with
influence from composer John Cage, poet
William Charles Williams and architect
Frederick Law Olmsted; from the beginning,
features included rectangular and cubic
shapes, equality or symmetry, repetition,
neutral surfaces, industrial materials and
great formats, all this with the aim of crea-
ting an immediate visual impact.
One of the first to be specifically linked to
the current is Frank Stella and his striped
paintings; also, Agnes Martin and Robert
Ryman and their monochromatic canvas;
Robert Mangold and Brice Marden with
their rigorous geometry essays and Sol Le-
witt with his conceptual art, in which liberty
and pleasure are expressed in total fullness.

condensar en escasos elementos, volú-
menes y formas, la expresión y reflexión
del artista, llamando al espectador a la
impresión instantánea y efectiva.
Con un toque de sofisticación, el orden
y la sobriedad definen a la arquitectura
minimalista, alcanzados a través de lí-
neas rectas, dejando a la vista materiales
que con anterioridad se recubrían como
el concreto o el acero, y favoreciendo la
amplitud del espacio mediante el uso ex-
tensivo del vidrio. La idea es el aspecto
más importante de la creación, manifes-
tada en lo sutil de las proporciones, la
elegancia de los materiales, los espacios
despejados y los colores neutros, todo en
un ambiente armónico y equilibrado.
Son la decoración y el diseño, las áreas
en que la mayoría identificamos los pun-
tos conceptuales de la corriente. Mue-
bles sencillos, precisos, modulares y fun-
cionales, con corte oriental o nórdico de
acabados finos, prevaleciendo la pureza
para conseguir el efecto deseado con el
menor número de componentes.
El color es igualmente importante y
aunque en la versión más dogmática se
exige una monocromía casi absoluta en
suelos, techos y paredes, el contraste
puede aportarse con pequeños detalles
de los que nunca hay que abusar. El blan-

Colour is equally important and although
in the most dogmatic version monochrome
floors, ceilings and walls are almost abso-
lutely demanded, contrast can be provided
with small details of which we can never
abuse of. White, with its wide range of tone
variations is capable of multiplying bright-
ness and complements with black or cream
and tanned. Textures as linen or sailcloth
are ideal in textiles and the use of plants
-always natural- is perfect for eclectic envi-
ronments that emanate calm and peace.
Something that can’t be missed is wood
in floors and furniture, the favourites are:
beech, pear tree, cherry tree and wenge.
In the almost empty walls, an outstanding
painting can hang.
Minimalist decoration fits well with buil-
dings of modern architecture, with high
loft-style spaces and with mezzanines or
second-stories at-sight; however, experts
are betting for style in houses and offices
whose construction is different. The objec-
tive in all cases is to renew energy, coziness
and comfort through clean spaces that fa-
vour visual rest.
It is certain that minimalism has entered
web design too, seeking to eliminate the
components that don’t contribute to the
functionality of the site. Less mess and less
distraction, which is not equivalent to dele-
ting images and links all over the place, but
to use effective typography, maximizing the
effect of images, using the color efficiently
and giving preference to spaces.

En un futuro cercano, veremos sin duda
una explosión de tecnologías según nos
movamos a un régimen de menor con-
sumo energético; los interesados se han
dado cuenta que la alternativa puede
traducirse en un considerable aumento
de ganancias y han puesto a sus científi-
cos a trabajar en proyectos como fuentes
caseras de hidrógeno, redes sensoras del
ambiente, vegetación que se alimenta
de toxinas, purificadores de agua con
tecnología ultrasónica, rastreadores de
especies en peligro, redes eléctricas del
futuro, estaciones solares, energía eólica
y plantas de limpieza del carbón, entre
muchos otros aspectos que demandan
atención inmediata.
Entre las novedades a que los consumi-
dores tenemos ya hoy acceso y que faci-
litarían en mucho nuestro propio com-
promiso, se encuentra ya en el mercado,
un medidor de watts (Watts up? o Kill-
a-watt) que al conectarse a los aparatos,
nos permite conocer el consumo men-
sual de un refrigerador, una lavadora o
PC, permitiendo focalizar esfuerzos en
ahorrar lo que realmente esta abusando
del poder en nuestro hogar y “duchas”
de bajo flujo (Oxygenics) que por medio
de la inyección de oxígeno permiten un
baño eficiente reduciendo a la mitad los
casi 12 litros de agua que se consumen
por minuto en un regaderazo que en
promedio nos toma de 7 a 12 minutos
por persona al día.
Las bicicletas eléctricas son otra buena
alternativa, ideal para trayectos cortos,
sin emisiones dañinas y reduciendo los
gastos del desplazamiento. Los paneles
solares en edificios y casas particulares,
reducen notablemente las cuentas de
gas, y los termostatos programables pue-

have to confront if we don’t change our
habits. Concepts as the greenhouse effect,
ozone layer decrease and climatic change
are daily subjects.
In the near future, we will undoubtedly
see a technology explosion just as we move
to a regime of less energetic consumption;
those concerned have realized that the al-
ternative can be translated into consider-
able increase in profits and have put their
scientists to work in projects as domestic
hydrogen sources, environment sensor sys-
tems, vegetation fed with toxins, ultrasonic
technology water purifiers, endangered
species trackers, future electrical nets, solar
stations, wind power and carbon cleaning
plants, among many other aspects that de-
mand immediate attention.
Among novelties that are already in the
market and which we consumers now have
access to and that would pretty much facili-
tate our own commitment, we find a watt-
meter (Watts up? or Kill-a-watt) which by
connecting to devices, allows us to know
the monthly consumption of a refrigerator,
a washing machine or a PC, allowing us to
focus efforts what it is really abusing power
in our home, and low flow “showers” (Oxy-
genics) that by means of oxygen injection

minute in a shower that takes an average of
7 to 12 minutes per person per day.

s i usted es gente de mundo y le gusta

la gente del mundo, Madrid puede
ser una buena opción en sus próximas
vacaciones, porque “ Madrid es la caña”
y no nos referimos al carrizo leñoso que
nos brinda generosamente el azúcar y el
ron, sino al vasito con cerveza de grifo
que bien servido, se corona de espuma
y va marcando rayitas a cada trago y que
acompañado de rico aperitivo o “ tapa”,
para ser más propio en el lenguaje de
Madrid, se goza en el ambiente cosmo-
polita que provocan los múltiples bares
madrileños donde “ la peña”, es decir la
gente, gusta de los otros y se reúne con
“los colegas”, con “la pandilla”, vamos…
con los amigos, a disfrutar de animadas
tertulias codo a codo, con la humanidad
que ahí concurre.
Un Madrid que brinda posibilidades
variadas en lo turístico y cultural, tan di-
versas como los usos que la palabra caña
tiene; como cuando se dice “fuimos de
cañas” para indicar que la hemos pasado
bien con los amigos o al decir “dar caña”
se expresa esfuerzo, poder y cantidad; o
para calificar algo de bueno o agradable
se dice que es “pura caña” y para enfati-
zar, “caña pura”. En Madrid la conviven-
cia, la diversión y la cultura son parte de
lo cotidiano en días que usted puede em-

fuerte apenas tocado por un chorrito de

el arte, hace que nuestras raíces se
reflejen en la tan invadida cultura con-
temporánea. En el hermoso estado de
Oaxaca existen seis mil pueblos mestizos
e indígenas y dieciséis etnias que alber-
gan a más de quinientos mil artesanos,
apoyados en su talento artístico e imagi-
nación, respetando los medios y técnicas
tradicionales.
Dentro de este marco se ha hecho fa-
moso en México, un tipo de cerámica co-
nocida como el barro negro de Oaxaca,
originario de una pequeña población al-
farera en el valle, San Bartolo Coyotepec,
ubicada a 8 km. de la capital del estado,
pasando el aeropuerto y que es reconoci-
da por su inimitable barro negro.
Hay locales con exhibición y venta de
piezas a ambos lados de la carretera,
pero nada más doblando a la izquierda,
se encuentra el taller más conocido y de
prestigio, la alfarería “Doña Rosa”, en la
calle Benito Juárez, número 24.

vaded contemporary culture. In the beauti-
ful state of Oaxaca, there are six thousand
mixed races and indigenous groups and six-
teen ethnic groups that harbor more than
500,000 artisans, with artistic talent and
imagination and observing the traditional
methods and techniques.
Within this framework, a type of ceramic
known as black clay of Oaxaca has become
famous in México; it originated in a small
pottery village in the valley, San Bartolo
Coyotepec; which is located 8 km from the
capital city, passing the airport and recog-
nized for its inimitable black clay.
There are small shops that exhibit and
sell pieces in both sides of the road, but
just turning to the left, the most famous
and prestigious workshop is found, “Doña
Rosa” pottery, at 24 Benito Juárez street.
In that village, Doña Rosa Real de Nieto
is a well acknowledged personality; of in-
digenous origin, she was born in 1900 and
died in 1980. Heroine of handicrafts, she

En este poblado, se reconoce como un
ícono la personalidad de Doña Rosa Real
de Nieto, mujer de origen indígena que
nació en 1900 y murió en 1980. Heroína
de las artesanías que gozó de la simpa-
tía de presidentes y dignatarios de Méxi-
co. Puedo creer que a algunos de ellos
les pareció una especie de símbolo, y la
consintieron en diferentes formas. En la
casa todavía se pueden ver recortes de
periódicos y fotografías tomadas con al-
tos funcionarios mexicanos y extranjeros
que fueron a visitarla, así como diplomas
y reconocimientos por sus méritos artís-
ticos.
La idea del “barro negro” no debe con-
fundir a la gente, porque en realidad el
barro nativo y crudo -antes de ir al horno-
es rojo como la mayoría de las arcillas de
baja temperatura. Quema rojo amarillen-

them saw her as a kind of symbol and pam-
pered her in different ways. In the house,
you can still see newspaper clippings and
photographs taken with high Mexican and
foreign officials that visited her, as well as
diplomas and acknowledgements for her
artistic merits.
The idea of “black clay” must not mislead
people, because in reality native and raw
clay –before the oven- is red as most low-
temperature clays. It burns a yellowish-red,
and if a fired piece is broken, you can see
red clay and only the surface is black. Doña
Rosa polished black clay when she acciden-
tally discovered that the ceramic could be
polished with quartz stones; that is what
we now know as “gleaming black clay”.

cies están negras. Doña Rosa le dio brillo
al barro negro, cuando accidentalmente
descubrió que la cerámica se podía pulir
con piedras de cuarzo; de esta forma vio la
luz lo que hoy conocemos como barro ne-
gro brillante. En sus últimos años de vida,
ella continuó transformando el barro en
hermosas piezas, con la misma fuerza y la
habilidad de sus mejores épocas.
Según los mejores criterios conocidos,
el “barro negro” se quema a baja tem-
peratura en atmósfera reductora, con
las aberturas del horno completamente
cerradas; estamos hablando de hornos
caseros-rudimentarios, hechos con apila-
dos de ladrillos y montados cada vez que
se hacen quemas.
El taller es interesante: un gran esta-
cionamiento donde pueden acomodarse

same strength and skill as in her best times.
According to the best known opinions,
“black clay” is burnt at low temperature
in a reducing atmosphere, with the oven’s
openings completely closed; we are talking
about rudimentary, home-produced ovens,
made of piled-up bricks and mounted each
time it is needed.
The workshop is interesting: a large par-
king lot where half a dozen tourism coaches
(microbuses) and several automobiles can
be accommodated; then, in the main buil-
ding, a thirty-meter courtyard bordered
on its four sides by the construction; there
are also three exhibition halls. In one of
the courtyard’s sides, under cover, there
are about 100 chairs, auditorium-like, for
people to sit and watch Valente Nieto work,
who seems quite bored of doing the same
everyday. Here, the traditional method of
the drill without wheel is still used; it consists
of two clay concave plates, one downwards
carrying the other. This is a pre-Hispanic
heritage. Pieces are moulded on this drill,
but people who know of ceramics admit

ver trabajar a Valente Nieto, que parece
bastante aburrido ya de hacer todos los
días lo mismo. Aquí se continúa el méto-
do tradicional del torno sin rueda, que
consiste en dos platos cóncavos de barro,
uno hacia abajo soportando el otro. Este
método es una herencia prehispánica.
Las piezas se moldean sobre este torno.
Pero quienes saben de cerámica recono-
cen que el trabajo de torno, con las ma-
nos, es maravilloso y siempre sorprende
a los que no están acostumbrados. Tiene
algo de magia que le encanta a la gente y
sobre todo a los niños.
A los pequeños se les anima para que
tomen un poco de barro fresco y hagan
alguna pieza junto con Valente. Es una
buena forma de hacer atractiva la visita,
y que no parezca que la gente sólo viene
a comprar. Si en otras ceramiquerías de
México se hiciera esto, sería una buena
forma de promover la artesanía y de dar-
la a conocer.
Los artesanos locales y las autoridades
de turismo locales, y hasta algunas de
niveles muy superiores han venido ju-
gando con la idea de que este acabado
negro lustroso es realizado “con una fór-
mula secreta”. En general, la gente de la
zona trata de ocultar la técnica, en parte
para cubrir el asunto con una especie de
misterio, en parte para evitar que otros
pueblos e incluso gente de la misma lo-
calidad, que no pertenece a las familias
conocidas, se pongan a hacer el mismo
trabajo y aumente la competencia. En
nuestra experiencia de acercamiento a las
artesanías populares, esto no es nuevo:

nunca hay algo así, y la mayor parte de
las veces, a un ceramista con cierta expe-
riencia le resultan más o menos claras las
formas de hacer las cosas.
Para comprar, la verdad es que es una
maravilla, porque se pueden conseguir
piezas muy bien acabadas, incluso finas,
por precios cómodos. Hay que ver con
cuidado, claro, porque hay también mu-
chas segundas y terceras, sobre todo en
las tiendas de la ciudad y alrededor de los
mercados. Supongo que las piezas más
conocidas son las vasijas y los floreros,
y unas muy típicas son las vasijas de for-
ma esférica, con boca ancha arriba, pero
con el cuerpo completamente calado de
agujeros, como si fuera un gran colador.
Y según entendimos, es lo que son, justa-
mente, para quitarle paja y piedras a los
frijoles y otros granos. Se echa dentro el
alimento, se sacude, y las piedras y basu-
ritas pequeñas caen, quedando dentro el
frijol limpio. En las casas de familia ob-
viamente no sirven para nada, así que el
uso más común es ponerlas bocabajo y
encender dentro una vela o una lámpara
para beneficiarse de una bonita ilumina-
ción intimista.
Al parecer, no hay vajillas de esta ce-
rámica por razones obvias (¿le gustaría
comerse una sopa en un plato negro-ne-
gro?) ni nada que propiamente se pueda
usar en la cocina; todo es para uso deco-
rativo.
De algún modo la sensibilidad de un
pueblo puede encontrar toda una diversi-
dad de cauces de expresión y en este caso
el barro negro es uno de ellos ya que no

increase competition. In our experience of
approach to popular handicrafts, this is not
new: we have found many times the idea
of the “secret formula” and of a supposed
secret technique passed from generation to
generation. The truth is that there is hardly
ever a thing like this, and most of the time,
to a somewhat experienced potter, ways of
making things are more or less clear.
To buy it, is truly a marvel, because you
can get very well finished pieces, including
fine ones, at very low prices. Of course you
have to watch carefully because there are
also many seconds and thirds, particularly
in the city’s shops and around markets. I
suppose the best known pieces are vessels
and vases, and the very typical round ves-

Somehow, people’s sensitivity can find a
whole diversity of ways of expression, and
in this case, black clay is one of them; it not
only represents traditions’ heritage but it
now adds up a totally artistic and aesthetic
dimension, in which past and present are
combined, forming a bridge towards the fu-
ture of indigenous expression.

is strategically built on top of a cliff over-
looking the Caribbean Sea and although
being structurally less impressive than oth-
ers like Chichen Itzá or Uxmal, and also less
extensive, it is the only one framed by blue
waters, a contrast which amazes not only
photographers and artists, but also all the
lucky visitors to the fortified city.
Despite the fact that its present name
means “fortification, palisade or wall”,
in ancient times, Tulum was known as
“Zamá”-dawn or morning-, a better name
and more suggestive because, from its lo-
cation in the coastal plain, it was possible
to contemplate –just like today- the natural
horizon in every direction, something be-
lieved to have turned it into a key point for
astronomical observation.
Tulum is a must when visiting the Mexi-
can Southeast. It is located on the northern
border of the Sian Ka’an Biosphere reserve,
approximately 140 km away from Cancún
and just 12 km away from the natural won-
der of Xel-Há.
In the zone, there are three different a-
reas: the hotel area, the town and the ar-
chaeological area. The main attraction of
the small and rustic hostels which harmo-
nize perfectly with the natural environment

Se cree que su fundación tuvo lugar
alrededor del año 1200, alcanzando su
esplendor hacia 1400. Los vestigios evi-
dencian su importancia como puerto co-
mercial, lo que los hizo independientes
del dominio de otros centros mayas has-
ta 1518, cuando llegó el primer conquis-
tador español, Juan de Grijalva.
Lo que hoy puede apreciarse fue cons-
truido en su mayoría en el Postclásico
Tardío, aunque ciertos elementos pre-
sentan estilos del Clásico Temprano, por
lo que se considera que el asientamien-
to pudo haberse originado casi un siglo
antes. Tulum fue abandonada y ocultada
por la naturaleza hasta ser redescubierta
muchos siglos más tarde. En 1981, se le
declaró Parque Nacional y en 1993, Zona
de Monumento Arqueológico.
Su posición sobre el acantilado de pie-
dra caliza frente al mar, convirtió a la
fortaleza en ineludible para las rutas co-
merciales y en principal explotadora de
los ricos recursos marítimos de la costa
de Quintana Roo.

bean coasts. The town´s main street thrives
with commercial activity: handicraft stores,
traditional food restaurants and other ser-
vices. The customs, traditions and language
of the Mayan indigenes are still alive in the
neighboring towns.
The sylvan region offers unparalleled and
incredible richness, with shapes, variety
and colors that take your breath away and
turn it into the ideal place for nature’s lo-
vers; however, it is the ancient fortified city
–erected 12 meters high- that is the most
exquisite and worthy of being admired.
It is believed that its foundation took place
around 1200, reaching its splendor around
1400. The remains provide evidence of its
importance as a commercial port, which
made them independent from the control of
other Mayan centers until 1518, when the
first Spanish conqueror, Juan de Grijalva,
arrived.
What we can presently see was mostly
built on the late post-classical era, although
certain elements present styles from the ear-
ly classic, reason for which it is considered
that the settlement could have originated
almost a century before. Tulum was aban-
doned and hidden by nature until it was

and political heart of the city, delimited to
the north, south and west by an impressive
wall measuring between 5 and 6 meters
thick, with watch towers that are still visi-
ble. The sea provides protection to the east.
The most outstanding structure because
of its size, location and façade is “El Cas-
tillo” (The Castle), on whose construction it
is possible to appreciate several stages. Its
three ornamented doorways with snake-
shaped columns, the descending divinity
and zoomorphic masks on the corners all
stand out. To the north is “El Templo del
Dios Descendente” (The Descending God’s
Temple), decorated with the image of the
main iconographic element of the city. The
winged figure that seems to be descending
from the sky is the representation of Venus,
the god.
The “Templo de los Frescos” (Fresco Paint-
ing Temple) is located to the east of the
road; it is the most lavishly decorated with
bas reliefs and paintings, being one of the
most important examples of Mayan pre-
Hispanic murals.
“La Casa de las Columnas” (The House
of Columns) and “La Casa de Halch Uiic”
(Halch Uinic’s House) are an example of
residential architecture, while “La Casa del
Cenote” (The Cenote House) is a clear ex-
ample of its inhabitants’ worship for water.

ra Tankan a sólo 5 km al norte; Cristal,
a 4.5 km al sur y Casa Cenote a 11 km,
con la caverna subterránea más grande
del mundo.
También puede resultarle atrayente
observar y conocer la flora y fauna de una
de las Reservas de la Biósfera más impor-
tantes del mundo. Tortugas blancas, laúd
y caguamas llegan a desovar a la orilla de
la playa en ciertas épocas del año y en
los alrededores pueden verse cocodrilos,
iguanas, manatíes, garzas y muchas otras
especies en su hábitat natural.
Tulum fue no hace mucho, motivo de
noticia mundial, al realizarse análisis de
Carbono 14 a varias osamentas encon-
tradas en sus cavernas sumergidas. Los
resultados permitieron comprobar pre-
sencia prehistórica correspondiente a fi-
nales del Pleistoceno, aportando nuevos
elementos a la comprensión del pobla-
miento americano.
En la cueva de Naharon se recuperó un
esqueleto femenino de 1.41 m de altura
y peso aproximado de 53 kg, cuyo aná-
lisis arrojó una antigüedad de alrededor
de 13 mil 600 años, lo que la hace, a pe-
sar de haber permanecido oculta bajo
el agua tanto tiempo, la más “vieja” de
todo el continente.
No cabe duda que por muchos moti-
vos, el lugar, hermoso, enigmático, res-
plandeciente, dramáticamente encara-
mado por sobre el paisaje verde, azul y
amarillo de la playa y el Caribe, seguirá
sorprendiendo a los aventureros con la
aspiración suficiente para convertirse en
los “Señores” de Tulum, aún cuando sea
por unas cuantas horas.
Finally, to the north, there are structures
belonging to the Kukulcán group, with a
temple dedicated to the God of the wind.
Once the archaeological tourist is sa-
tisfied, he may take part in a series of ac-
tivities offered in the region, like practicing
adventure sports, snorkeling and explor-
ing caverns and cenotes in places like Ca-
lera Tankan, just 5 km north; Cristal, 4.5
km south and Casa Cenote, 11 km away,
with the largest subterranean cavern in the
world.
It may also be appealing to observe and
get to know the flora and fauna of one of
the most important Biosphere Reserves in
the world. White and large turtles arrive
there to lay their eggs on the beach shore
at certain times of the years and in the sur-
roundings, it is possible to see crocodiles,
iguanas, manatees, herons and many other
species in their natural habitat.
Tulum appeared in the world news not so
long ago when carbon dating was practiced
on several skeletons found in its subterra-
nean caverns. The results helped to confirm
pre-Historical presence dating back to the
late Pleistocene, contributing new elements
for the understanding of American settle-
ments.
In the cavern of Naharon, a woman’s
skeleton was recovered; it measured 1.41 m
tall and weighed approximately 53 kg and
upon being analyzed, it was proved that it
dated back 13,600 years, which makes it-
in spite of having been hidden underwater
for such a long time- the “oldest one” in the
whole continent.
There’s no doubt that, for many reasons,
this beautiful place, so enigmatic, dazzling
and dramatically perched over the green,
blue and yellow landscape of the beach
and the Caribbean, will continue to amaze
adventurers with enough aspiration to be-
come “Lords” of Tulum, if only for a few
hours.

Sostener una empresa y encaminarla
al éxito, no es cuestión de azar. Cada día
la fortuna llega menos a herederos de la
experiencia y fortuna familiar y más a los
nuevos emprendedores con ideas inno-
vadoras y un manejo gerencial proactivo,
que les han permitido adaptarse al entor-
no e insertarse en la economía global que
exige “jugar” diferente, si se pretende
permanecer en el mercado.
La literatura al respecto es variada y la
tendencia a novelizar las historias victo-
riosas nos ha llenado de manuales ex-
press, libros de consejos y programas de
televisión sobre prestigiosos hombres y
mujeres de negocios a los que les basta
no tener piedad alguna del contrincan-
te. En el mundo real son muchas más las
áreas a las que hay que prestar atención
si se intenta tomar ventaja.
Un elemento vital para que una corpo-
ración crezca y se fortalezca, es la transfe-
rencia de mando y delegación de poder,
con el obvio costo que incluye la inversión
en capacitación de los recursos humanos
que no obstante, cometerán errores en el
proceso de acoplamiento y aprendizaje.

During the seventies, Japanese automobile
companies amazingly increased their par-
ticipation in the American market and with
justified reason. Their product was better
and less costly. Other sectors like electron-
ics followed a similar road, for which in the
next decades, many North American com-
panies added the benchmarking tool that
afterwards extended to great multination-
als such as Xerox, IBM, Citi bank, American
Express, General Motors, Dupont, Kodak,
Motorola, Westinghouse and Walt Disney.
But, what is benchmarking? Basically the
continuous process of measuring one’s own
product or service versus the toughest and
most renowned competitors, leaders in the
branch; included are operation ways, han-
dling of resources and use of technology,
with the purpose of re-devising the processes
until a certain objective is achieved, which
will be immediately updated.
Last but not least, we must not forget that
there are a great number of companies that
have a vastly superior power than that of
many countries in the world. The sum of the
GDP (gross domestic product) of 22 coun-
tries in Latin America (excluding the ten
stronger economies) is according to IMF
$180,000 million dollars (2007) while the
profits of the 22 most lucrative companies
in the Forbes list sum 360,000 million dol-
lars, exactly twice.
This piece of information leads us to ques-
tion about their responsibility, because
besides creating profits to their investors,
something they undoubtedly do very well,
we will have to consider, how they help soci-
ety, thanks to which, they have triumphed.
Social benchmarking must not be taken
so lightly. A volunteering program, a round-

de las 22 empresas más rentables de la
lista de Forbes suman 360 000 millones
de dólares; justamente el doble.
El dato nos lleva a cuestionarnos su res-
ponsabilidad, pues además de generar
utilidades a sus inversionistas, lo cual sin
duda hacen bien, habría que considerar
cómo ayudan a la sociedad gracias a la
cual han conseguido triunfar.

riado, campañas de redondeo (en donde
por cierto el benefactor es el consumidor)

un verdadero compromiso.

forget that any organization is above all,
a social entity; the companies are people
and these, the cause for self-improvement
in every level, for which beyond the modern

lo que más allá de lo moderno y actual,
los conceptos de siempre; solidaridad,
consenso, transparencia, libertad, justi-
cia, respeto, cooperación, espontaneidad
y humanización del trabajo, seguirán for-
mando parte del “secreto” para convertir
en exitosa una empresa, sin importar su
categoría u origen.

Talented Spokesman
of a Splendorous Past
n acido en Buenos Aires, Argentina un
26 de enero de 1956, el artista plás-
tico Gonzalo Gorostiaga ha hecho suya
la consigna de mostrar al mundo el arte
de los antiguos mayas, plasmando en
el lienzo, objetos cotidianos y sagrados
que con variados motivos elaboraron en
piedra, madera, barro y jade, anónimos
creadores de la milenaria cultura; reno-
vando su vigencia con relieves y texturas
que les devuelven su atemporal magia y
belleza y defienden una identidad que el
mundo globalizado de hoy podría fácil-
mente ocultar.
“Estoy prendido a los pueblos prehispá-
nicos y mi obra es un homenaje a quienes
sin ningún tipo de tecnología, lograron
piezas únicas y maravillosas” dice Gonza-
lo. “De no ser artista, no sabría que otra
cosa ser” admite y continúa describién-
dose, “Soy curioso y voy en continua bús-
queda de la belleza y la armonía, tengo
casi todas las otras áreas de mi persona
bloqueadas, no se cocinar ni conducir,
me llevo mal con la electrónica, los ce-
lulares y los asuntos domésticos, así que
decidí aprovechar el don que se me dio,
el de pintar”.
Informal y amigable, Gonzalo nos con-
tó sobre el origen de su admiración por el
arte precolombino, “Todo comenzó hace
algunos años, mirando un artículo sobre
cerámica africana. Me pregunté que pa-
saba en nuestras tierras en ese tiempo y
descubrí a los maestros que las poblaron
antes de la conquista, quedando deslum-
brado como nunca antes, al tiempo que
me preguntaba porqué siempre admira-
mos lo de afuera; así que decidí que mi
forma de aportar algo era haciendo lo
que sabía hacer: pintar”
Para el artista, el éxito resulta momen-
táneo y artificial, “Prefiero dejar huella
sin ruido, me gustaría ser recordado sin

prisa, que me piensen” concluye entu-
siasmado.
Contrario a lo que podría pensarse, por
la fidelidad con que el pintor ha capta-
do el espíritu de uno de los pueblos más
esplendorosos de la América Prehispáni-
ca, Gonzalo nos confiesa no haber estado
nunca en suelo mexicano, aunque sueña
con el día en que pueda recorrer Yucatán
y Palenque, para admirar los tesoros del
invaluable legado.
Admirador de Tiepolo, Velázquez, Ver-
meer, Tamayo, Rothko, Sargent, Zurba-
rán, Hockney, Ingres, Picasso, Maner, Po-
llock, Brancusi, Braque, Cinalli y muchos
otros, Gonzalo ha expuesto sus obras en
Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia y Estados
Unidos, y espera hacerlo pronto en Vene-
zuela y porqué no, también en México.
Es fiel creyente de casi todo, amor, le-
yes, amigos y religiones y se reconoce
confiado en que habrá un mañana en
donde logremos ser todos más dignos y
humanos, pensamientos sin duda here-
dados del sabio espíritu maya, “In Lak’
ech a lak’ en” -Tu eres yo y yo soy tú-.

b orn in Buenos Aires, Argentina, on Ja-
nuary 26, 1956, plastic artist Gonzalo
Gorostiaga has taken up the task of showing
the world the art of the ancient Mayas, cap-
turing on canvas everyday objects, as well
as sacred ones, made out of stone, wood,
clay and jade with varied motifs, anony-
mous creators from that millennial culture,
who still remain current through reliefs and
textures that give them back their timeless
magic and beauty and defend an identity
which today’s globalized world could easily
hide.
“I´m hooked on pre-Hispanic cultures
and my work is a tribute to those who,
without any kind of technology, achieved
unique and wonderful pieces”, says Gon-
zalo. “If I wasn’t an artist, I wouldn’t know
what else to be”, he admits and continues
describing himself: “I am curious and am
continuously searching for beauty and har-
mony, I almost have all the rest of the areas
within myself blocked, I can´t cook or drive,
I’m not good with electronics, cell phones
or domestic matters, so I decided to make
the most of the talent I was bestowed with,
which is painting”.
Familiar and friendly, Gonzalo told us
about the origin of his admiration for pre-
Columbian art: “It all began a few years
ago, looking over an article about African
pottery. I asked myself what was going on
in our lands in those days and discovered
the masters that settled there before the
Conquest, being dazzled as never before,
and at the same time, I asked myself why
we always admire that which comes from
the outside. So I decided that my way of
contributing in some way was by doing
what I knew: painting”.
For the artist, success is momentary and
artificial: “I’d rather leave a mark without
any noise, I would like to be remembered
without a hurry, to be thought of”, he con-
cludes enthusiastically.

Contrary to what we could think, because
of the painter’s faithfulness in capturing the
spirit of one of the most magnificent cul-
tures in pre-Hispanic America, Gonzalo con-
fesses that he has never stepped on Mexican
soil, although he dreams of the day when
he’ll be able to travel through Yucatán and
Palenque and admire the treasures of such
an invaluable legacy.
Admirer of painters such as Tiepolo, Ve-
lázquez, Vermeer, Tamayo, Rothko, Sar-
gent, Zurbarán, Hockney, Ingres, Picasso,
Maner, Pollock, Brancusi, Braque, Cinalli
and others, Gonzalo has exhibited his work
in Argentina, Uruguay, Colombia and the
United States, and he hopes to do it soon in
Venezuela and why not, also in México.
He is a faithful believer in almost every-
thing: love, laws, friends and religions and
he recognizes himself as gullible that there
will be a tomorrow in which we will all be-
come worthier and more human, inherit-
ing, without a doubt, the wise Mayan spirit,
“In Lak’ech a lak’en” –You are me and I am
you-.
