EDUC 450: PROFESSIONAL CLINICAL PRACTICE

LONG RANGE PLAN -- EARLY CHILDHOOD & ELEMENTARY

Candidate: JeLisa Ashby

Grade:4th
District: OSD5
Year: Fall 2015
Major: Elementary Education

Cooperating Teacher: Mary Robinson

School: Whittaker Elementary
Cognate(s): Science, Reading
Section I: Student Information

Describe the student information that you feel will have the most impact on the way you plan and deliver
instruction.
Important Student Information
Factors
(e.g. gender, SES, reading levels,
disabilities, ethnicity, student
interests, and other relevant
factors, etc.)
Reading levels

Description
(of your findings in terms of your
students)

Sources/Contextual Factors
(e.g. students, community resources, internet,
records, school personnel, family, etc.)

Lack of interest, high incompletion

rate, disruptions from not being able
to focus.

Accelerated Reader goals are compiled from

students benchmark performances. The data is
used to determine the reading levels of each
student.
The ESOL teacher Ms. Fogle takes the ESL
students at different times of the day to work on
reading comprehension and fluency. I am allowed to
read their tests to them.
Some weeks students performed higher on science
that in reading especially if there was an experiment
involved. I also feel like science can be taught more
explicitly than reading which can engage a student
more.
IEP is a resource that is offered to this particular
student. They can have certain subjects read to
them during testing. After the 2nd attempt that the
whole class is allowed this student performs higher
after given more time.

Ethnicity

Language barriers.

Student Interest

I noticed that most students were

more interested in science than in
ELA.

Disabilities

This students IEP is classified as

other

Reflect on the student Information: Why do you feel that this student information is of primary importance,
and (2) how did and will you use this student information to guide the development of your long and short
range plans?
I feel that this student information is of primary importance because the data collected from this area is used to guide
your planning and instruction for the entire year. I will use this information to make sure I included differentiated
instructions, abide by all IEPs, and monitor and adjust along the way, in order to meet the student where they are at
while applying the foundations for where they need to be.

Section II: Long Range Learning and/or Developmental Goals

Describe the long range learning/developmental goals (standards) that you have established for your
students in each of the four content areas. Make sure that you include goals that address the cognitive,
psychomotor and affective domains and diversity for students.

Subject: English Language Arts

Long Range Learning and/or Developmental Goals

4.RI.7. Interpret factual information presented graphically or visually (e.g., in charts, graphs, diagrams, time lines,
animations, or interactive elements on Web pages) and explain how the information contributes to understanding
the text in which they appear.
4-6.7 Use vocabulary (including Standard American English) that is appropriate for the particular audience or purpose.

4.L.5. Demonstrate understanding of figurative language, word relationships, and nuances in word meanings.

Reflect on the long range learning and/or developmental goals: Of the long range learning and/or
developmental goals you have established, which goals do you believe are the most important for all
students to achieve, and why?

Out of the standards and indicators that selected to focus on, I believe that the second standard above is
the of the most importance. A students comprehension and usage of vocabulary, I feel, is the difference
maker in literacy. Vocabulary applies to every level of reader (encompassing the factors of section I),
increases the engagement of a student when taught through applications, and will improve writing skill
simultaneously. I will infuse this standard throughout all subjects and throughout instruction daily.

Subject: Mathematics

Long Range Learning and/or Developmental Goals

4-2.1 Recognize the period in the place value structure of whole numbers: units, thousands,

millions, and billions.

42.7 Compare decimals to hundredths by using the terms less than, is greater than, and is
equal to and the symbols.
4-2.8 Apply strategies and procedures to find equivalent forms of fractions.
43.2 Generalize a rule for numeric, nonnumeric, and repeating patterns
Reflect on the long range learning and/or developmental goals: Of the long range learning and/or
developmental goals you have established, which goals do you believe are the most important for all
students to achieve, and why?

The math standards I highlighted I feel that the recognitions of whole numbers is the most imperative. The
recognition of the place value of whole numbers is the base for fractions and decimals. Understanding
place value allow for application of the relationship of numbers to their respective places allowing for
comprehension of measurements, values, and parts.

Subject: Science

Long Range Learning and/or Developmental Goals

4-1. The student will demonstrate an understanding of scientific inquiry, including the
processes, skills, and mathematical thinking necessary to conduct a simple scientific
investigation.
4-1.6 Construct and interpret diagrams, tables, and graphs made from recorded measurements and observations.
4-4..4 Summarize the conditions and effects of severe weather phenomena (including thunderstorms, hurricanes, and tornadoes) and
related safety concerns.

Reflect on the long range learning and/or developmental goals: Of the long range learning and/or
developmental goals you have established, which goals do you believe are the most important for all
students to achieve, and why?

First and foremost, the understanding of scientific inquiry are the most important for all students to
achieve because science itself cannot happen without mastery of this standard. The scientific method can
also be applied in other content areas. Application of the scientific method across the curriculum will
increase comprehension and develop the student into a better thinker, and will encourage them to own
their learning experience in solving the problem themselves.

Subject: Social Studies

Long Range Learning and/or Developmental Goals

4-2The student will demonstrate an understanding if how the settlement of North America was influenced by the interactions of Native
Americans, Europeans, and Africans.

4-1 The student will demonstrate an understanding of political, economic, and geographic reasons for the exploration of the New
World.
4-2.4 Summarize the relationship among Native Americans, Europeans, and Africans, including the French and Indian War, the slave
revolts, and the conduct of trade
4-4 The student will demonstrate an understanding of the beginnings of America as a nation and the establishment of the new
government.

Reflect on the long range learning and/or developmental goals): Of the long range learning and/or
developmental goals you have established, which goals do you believe are the most important for all
students to achieve, and why?

Out of the social studies goals that I have highlighted I believe that indicator 4-2.4 above is the most
important goal that students must achieve. I feel that this indicator will allow a platform for students to
apply their knowledge of earlier diagrams such as timelines and maps. Also with the amount of trade, the
concentration of slavery, and the treatment of Native Americans indicative to South Carolina, will engage
the students by encompassing their relative environment of South Carolina as a state.
