NEW COALITIONS LAUNCHED TODAY TAKING CONCRETE COOPERATIVE ACTIONS
A NEW PARIS PACT ON WATER AND ADAPTATION TO CLIMATE CHANGE

Paris, 2nd December 2015- National and local Governments, basin organizations, private
sector and civil society join to announce a number of ambitious initiatives and projects to
catalyze action on water and oceans resilience; key for sustainable development and yet
probably, the most affected by climate change. The Resilience Focus event of tomorrow is
part of the Lima-Paris Action Agenda (LPAA).
Recent climate changes have had widespread impacts on humanity and ecosystems, directly
affecting water resources and oceans. UN Water warns that without an improved water
resources management, the progress towards poverty reduction targets, the achievement of
the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), and sustainable development in all its economic,
social and environmental dimensions, will be jeopardized.
Key cooperatives initiatives will be presented, gathering all stakeholders - such as river basin
organizations, private sector, local and national Governments, civil society, and development
organizations, since collaboration beyond borders is essential for water resilience.
A cooperative pact on water and adaptation to climate change, as well as the commitment
from cities, private sector and civil society actors to enhance water resilience. Hundreds of
commitments are expected. Concrete and financial pledges to be announced.

GROWING CLIMATE RESILIENCE TO REDUCE VULNERABILITY AND

PROTECT PEOPLE
Paris, 2nd December 2015-. COP21 can be a turning point in the support for those who suffer
the most of climate change. Once again, negotiation can be supported by immediate action.
Tomorrow in Paris, among the LPAA* focuses days, national and local governments,
international organizations, development banks, private sectors, and civil society
representatives will present to decision-makers six initiatives to address resilience. Those six
major initiatives and projects will accelerate the implementation of innovative actions, in
areas such as integrated water resources management food security; disaster risk reduction
and capacity-building essential to resilience.
Extreme climatic events have often dramatic consequences in vulnerable states. Over the last
30 years, $1 out of every $3 spent on development has been lost as a result of recurring crises,
a total loss of $3.8 trillion worldwide, warns The Rockefeller Foundation. Natural disasters
affect not only economic dimension, but also the social and environmental one, affecting 217
million people every year.
Building long-term resilience, whether it is carried by states, organizations, local governments
development banks, or even private sectors, is essential to protect people and also their
livelihoods (natural, social, financial, physical and others) from the disruptive impacts of
climate change. Those initiatives will help address the needs of the nearly 634 million people
who live in at-risk coastal areas just a few meters above existing sea levels, as well as those
living in areas at risk of droughts and floods.
