Dear Constituents,
The legislature is wrapping up its work this month, marking the end of the first half of
the 131st General Assembly. It has been a busy year. From working on the states twoyear operating budget to intense debates on how to make our state better and brighter
for all Ohioans, there have been competing perspectives on how we can achieve broad
prosperity in our state. Recently, I was reminded of just how different Republican and
Democratic approaches can be at times.

Ohio House Dems

Are Now On:

Last month, the Republican-controlled House passed legislation that would effectively
defund one of the largest womens healthcare providers in our state. Under the proposal,
House Bill 294, approximately 80,000 Ohio women could lose access to vital, preventative healthcare services like mammograms, cervical cancer screenings and infertility prevention from their local Planned Parenthood provider. Ultimately, the proposal passed
the House, largely along party lines.
During the limited floor debate on House Bill 294, what struck me most was not that
Democratic questions on the bill went unanswered, but that the legislature seemed preoccupied with a divisive, political bill that has the very real potential to limit access to
healthcare for women in our state.
I do not believe that we can help more Ohioans obtain good paying jobs or a better education through big government imposing political beliefs on citizens, especially when
those beliefs could bring dangerous restrictions on when and where Ohioans can access
healthcare services.
In the new year, I am hopeful that the legislature can refocus its efforts, in a bipartisan
way, on the things that matter most to Ohioans: quality education, affordable access to
healthcare and attracting good paying jobs to our state. I know my Democratic colleagues and I will be offering real solutions to these problems, and I am hopeful that Republicans will join us in working to improve the quality of life for all Ohioans.
I wish you and your family joy, peace and love this month and in the new year. As always, never hesitate to contact my office with a concern or idea on how to make our
state a better place to live, work and raise a family. Good ideas do not come with a red
or blue label.
