CNG Storage Options

One of the key components in a fast-fill CNG Fueling Station is the CNG Storage.
In fact, the inclusion of ASME ground storage vessels really defines a fast-fill
refueling application.
How much storage you need depends on the amount of vehicles, the amount of
gas each vehicle requires, and the time frame in which the vehicles need to be
filled.

Fast-Fill station allows vehicles to pull up and refuel in a short period of time. In
order to fuel vehicles quickly, gas must be drawn from pre-pressurized storage
vessels. Unlike gasoline stations, natural gas must be stored above ground. And
because it is stored at high pressures it must be contained in ASME (American
Society of Mechanical Engineers) coded vessels. Vessels are 20 in diameter and
approximately 23 foot long. Each vessel will hold 10,000 cubic feet at 5,000 psi.
They are arranged in a three bank cascade meaning that there is a low bank
vessel, a medium bank vessel and a high bank vessel.
As a general rule of thumb, only 40% of the stored gas in a three bank cascade
arrangement is available for refueling. This means that a 30,000 cubic foot storage
cascade will deliver about 12,000 cubic feet of natural gas quickly. This equates to
about 96 equivalent gallons of gasoline.

A priority sequential panel is used to direct compressor discharge to the high, then
medium, then low bank. When filling, a vehicle will draw first from the low bank,
then the medium bank and top off from the high bank. The Compressor will
replenish the cascade by filling the high bank first, then the medium bank and
finally the low bank.
Compressed Natural Gas Storage Vessels

The 20-inch outside diameter, cylindrical CNG storage vessels

are for the commercial dispensing of compressed natural gas to motor vehicles at
CNG fuel stations. The vessels can supply CNG at up to 5,500 psi to a fill-up
nozzle. Typical commercial systems supply CNG to the customer vehicles fuel
tanks at ~3,600 psi. CNG Storage vessels usually set up and installed in set of 3.
The most common size is 20 Diameter x 23 Long ASME Section 8, Division I.
Each cng storage vessel will hold approximately 12,200 SCF gas storage @ 5,000
psig each (36,600 SCF or close to 300 GGE total)

CNG STORAGE VESSELS

The 20-inch outside diameter, cylindrical CNG storage vessels are for the
commercial dispensing of compressed natural gas to motor vehicles at CNG fuel

stations. The vessels can supply CNG at up to 5,500 psi to a fill-up nozzle. Typical
commercial systems supply CNG to the customer vehicles fuel tanks at ~3,500 psi.
Each 24-ft. vessel has a capacity of 12,115 SCF at 5,500 psi, or 10,900 SCF at
4,500 psi.
The vessel assembly is custom designed for the end users, and is designed using
the specifications and requirements from ASME Section VIII, Division 2, for
National Board registration, non on-board unit.
The vessels overall length may be customer specified up to 24-ft. long. The
footprint width is 42-inches (1.067 m). The height of the unit, with 3 vessels
oriented horizontally and stacked vertically, one on top of the next, is 85 inches
(2.159 m) tall.
The empty 24-ft. 3-tank assembly weighs 31,225-lbs. and 32,630-lbs. fully loaded
with CNG.
The pressure vessel design employs a thick walled cylindrical shell, and specially
designed 1/2, 3/4 and 1-inch NPT couplings. The pressure relief valve nozzle has
the same design as the other nozzles, except it has 3/4-inch NPT thread.
The vessel has a saddle-type support structure, designed to allow stacking of the
vessels in a variety of fashions.
A drain line with a high pressure needle valve is located at the bottom of each
vessel for easy maintenance cleanout.
An optionally provided high pressure lock out valve can be used to close off the
vessels relief nozzle during scheduled maintenance operations. This valves use in
design and practice are prescribed in ASME Section VIII, Division 2.
SPECIFICATIONS
Capacity: three (3) 12-ft. vessels is 15,880 SCF at 4,500 psi.
Capacity: three (3) 24-ft. vessels is 32,700 SCF at 4,500 psi.
Maximum allowable working pressure of 5,500 psi, at 120 F.
Minimum design metal temperature of -20 F at 5,500 psi.
Analysis of cyclic pressure loadings between 4,500 and 3,500 psi yields a vessel
life of 295 years.
Design also incorporates strength requirements for maximum wind and seismic
loads for any location in the United States of America, except for the areas in the
immediate vicinity of active, major geologic faults.

One of the crucial steps in CNG station installation and design is the CNG Fleet
Assessment ( current and future). During our fleet assessment, your CNG fueling
partner will gather information about your CNG fueling needs including
everything from how many vehicles will be fueled and how much fuel they use to
the ideal fueling pattern for the fleet. Using this information, your CNG station
development partner is able to design a cost-effective CNG station that maximizes
the efficiency of your operations.

After the initial design process, CNG fill

station engineer handles all aspects of each CNG stations development. While
implementing necessary design changes, CNG station developer sizes the
equipment, prepares the site layout and obtains all necessary building and safety
permits, all while working directly with the gas and electric utilities and even
coordinating new utility service where necessary. All of our projects are supervised
by a team of professionals with years of experience handling CNG fueling
infrastructure and high-pressure construction.

CNG STATION OPERATION AND

REPAIRS KEEP THAT FINAL STAGE
LOADED!
POSTED BY CNGCENTER ON MAY 16,
2013 IN TIPS

If added to the order for CNG fast fill-slow fill, CNGCenter provides a priority valve
on the discharge of the compressor skid. This priority valve is really a back-pressure
regulator, designed to maintain a minimum discharge pressure from the
compressor package. The purpose of this is to assure that the final stage of the
compressor is loaded.
It is important to keep this final stage loaded in order to prevent oil carryover. Most
of the Valves recommends 2500 psi as the minimum pressure to be maintained on
the CNG packages and, of course, higher pressures are quite acceptable.
Compressors tested without a back-pressure regulator show as much as 8 times
the amount of oil carry over as those that include the valve. In addition, loading the
unit also allows the compressor to operate under a more consistent load, reducing
problems that maybe associated with large swings in the rod loading.
Priority valves should never be adjusted at the compressor outlet with the
compressor running. The Joule Thompson effect from taking a large pressure
drop across the valve causes a severe cooling effect that can cause the valve stem
to momentarily grab its seating O-rings. Should this happen, the O-rings will move
with the stem and tear. A damaged O-ring is easy to find. Gas vents will vent up the
valve stem and exit out the top of the valve.
Remember; adjust the regulator with the compressor off.

High Flow Dispensers

The final essential component to successful CNG fueling is high quality and high capacity
dispensing equipment. ANGS utlizes high flow technology for a faster fueling experience and
temperature sensitve metering to ensure fully pressurized and complete fills. ANGS dispensers can
be configured to accept specific fleet cards for private stations or a range of fleet and credit cards for
publicly accessible stations.

High Capacity Storage Cylinders & Spheres

Aside from the compressor at the core of our stations, ANGS strategically employs storage cylinders
to provide storage for buffer and cascade fill. Custom tailored storage ensures faster fill rates and is
a key component to meet peak fueling capacity. ANGS storage vessels include both spheres and
cylinders, and are built to meet and exceed ASME and NFPA standards.

Fast Fill Equipment

Fast fill stations require extreme attention to detail in desiging and sizing system
configuration. ANGS's team of experienced engineers will optimize the station for
