Analysis of Kamathipura by Namdev Dhasal

Namdev Laxman Dhasal was a marathi poet , Writer and Human Right
activist from Maharasshtra. He was born on February 15, 1949 In village near
Pune. A member of previously called Mahar Class. He grew up in dire poverty.
He spent his childhood in mumbai where his father work for a butcher. Following

the example of the american black panther movement he founded The Dalit
Panther with friend in 1972. Dhasal was one of the famous and outspoken
member of this group. The present poem Kamathipur is a picture of that people
who belong to low caste. Namdev Dhasal have written in period of 1981. In that
poem he tried to describe the sorrow of prostitute and their profession.
Kamathipura deals with the people , places and the profession existing on the
threshold of the decent world. His world is unknown to sophisticated, cultured
and modern urban world even though the margin between the two world in all
respect is quiet thin, porous and fragile. In his poem he portrays prostitute , their
visitors and pimps in his poem. This places is highly porous. Woman and girls
from all parts of india are brought and sold here and forced in into the profession
of prostitute. This happen as their high paying visitors from the margin world. In
this poem portrays this places as a following lineThe noctural porcupine reclines here
Like an alluring grey bouquet
Wearing the symphilitic sores of centuries
Pushing the caledar away
Forever lost in its dream (Lines 1-5)
In above lines , he goes on to describe to this place as HELL. Swirling
vortex and Ugly aagony.

Ethos in that poem

Kamathipura is very different and difficult poem to interpreat. The subject
of this essay is to search Ethos and pathos so the ethos is basically related to
ethical values of life in society. This values teaches us to live life with good

manner but in this poem , poet has portrays to prostitute life and this people is
neglected by the society or white collar people but we cant say that this poem is
wrong. Kamathipura ethically acceptable for these people who living in such a
places all over india .

Pathos in poem
This is the picture of poor people which poet has descirbe. How they
people live there? Why this condition come in their life ? such a questions rise
here after reading this poem . all the sorrow of their life he has try to describe in
his poem and further the people are waiting for new days for their life .

Logos in Poem
All this poem is totally description of these who live in prostitute area and
that period was explained in this peom.they are fighting with thair daily problem
every day and now a time such places are in all over india but they are not in
light.

The intension behind this poem to target that people who avoid to
understand them. And second who living such a life without any shamefulness.

He try to awake that people who are unaware about world. Some time he use
some vulgar word in his poem and for to stand their self respect. In other hand
he also try to strike them who are unaware about such a society of a people. And
that leader who are white collar people.
