CHEMISTRY YEAR 09 Class activity sheet-09 (Symbols of elements and sub-atomic particles)

Lesson objectives:
By the end of this lesson, about 70% of the learners should be able to:

Write down the symbols of the first twenty elements

Define atomic number and enter the symbols on the Periodic Table in order of increasing atomic number

Identify sub-atomic particles and state their characteristics

Recap of previous lesson:

What can you recall about the last lesson?
Prompt for prior knowledge:
What do you known about symbols of elements?
(a) Mnemonic for symbols of the first 20 elements in order of increasing atomic number
Hey He Like beating Boys Come Near Our Field, New Nation Manufacture All Silver pots
So Clear King Canada.
Activity 01: Which element is represented by
(a) He in the mnemonic? Boys in the mnemonic?
(b) Come in the mnemonic? .. Near in the mnemonic? .
(c) New in the mnemonic? . Nation in the mnemonic? .
(d) Silver in the mnemonic? ... So in the mnemonic?
(e) Clear in the mnemonic? Canada in the mnemonic? ..
Activity 02: Complete the Periodic Table below by filling the symbols of the first 20
elements

Atomic numbers
- On the Periodic Table, atomic numbers are numbered from left to right.
Activity 03:
(a) Define atomic number?
..

(b) (i) Calcium has an atomic number of 20. What does it mean?

(ii) Hydrogen has only an atomic number of 1. What does it mean?

Activity 04: Complete the Periodic Table below by filling the atomic numbers of the first
20 elements

The structure of the atom

- About 25 million atoms can fit on the tip of a safety pin.
- An atom is made up of two parts. These parts are:
The nucleus
The space around the nucleus called the shells
- Every atom has three sub-atomic particles which are protons, electrons and neutrons and
memorised using the acronym PEN.
- Hydrogen is the only atom that has only one proton and one electron. It has no neutron.
