Scenario:
As a group of young artists you will be working on a campaign to celebrate the history and legacy of
Surrey Street Market, Croydon. This one of the oldest parts of Croydon and has a wealth of history. You
have been asked to produce a body of paintings as a group that promotes a positive visual reflection of
the Market. They have requested that all of the imagery produced contains some elements of location
based recording and that you manipulate and develop your ideas through experimenting materials and
processes.
This is an excellent opportunity for you to explore and visually record the activities of the people in the
market through photography drawing painting and notation; you should be looking for the unusual, the
quirky, the little snippets of beauty that a casual glance might miss. There are many things to
celebrate and record: the people, the traders, the architecture, but only if you are willing to look for
them.
Exploring both traditional and contemporary practices you will build a portfolio of primary imagery to
work from before developing, refining and experimenting with painting techniques and materials to
generate a body of work that celebrates the area. Once finalised, the groups work will be exhibited in
an exhibition located with surrey street market. Your work must be exhibition ready and consider the
viewer and the exhibition space.

Use visual recording show an individual approach to communicating, comparing, illustrating and
expanding information and presenting work in a coherent and appropriate creative format.
This project is designed to introduce you to a range of core concepts, techniques and skills within
painting and mixed media. You will be covering a wide variety of approaches, both traditional and
experimental, both as independent and combined disciplines. Whilst exploring these pathways you will
also be developing ideas and concepts based around the Surrey Street Market. You will be expected to
document and recording your exploration both technique and sources of inspiration. Your primary
concern will be to develop your confidence in your practical work, through a series of workshop
experiments that lead you to explore the theme independently.
Stage 1: RECORDING AND EXPLORING
For this part of the assignment you need to make a series of drawings, paintings, photographs and
mixed media pieces exploring the theme. A visit to Bermondsey/Borough Market will provide you with a
good basis for collecting visual imagery, and your own self-initiated visit to a district of your choice will
develop this further.
Skills-based workshops will include creating textures and mixed media, layering and working with
recycled materials, emulsion and acetone transfer, incorporating metallic foils and embroidery for
multi-disciplinary outcomes, large-scale painting, and modern chiaroscuro as well as exploring the
qualities of oils, acrylics and watercolours.
Stage 2: DEVELOPING IDEAS
After the work shop phase you will be encouraged and supported to develop your own work by
interpreting the theme in a way personal to you. To help you to generate fine art ideas you will
research a variety of possible concepts and subjects. The skills required to gather useful information
and use it purposefully are an essential part of this process. Students will then work independently to
produce an outcome through experimentation and constant review.
Stage 3: REVIEWING AND PROPOSING IDEAS
Each student will be asked to develop a proposal for their final outcome. These should combine
thorough research of both visual and conceptual ideas alongside your own initial plans and choices of
materials and processes.
Stage 4: Final Outcome
The proposal will then form the basis of your own brief. At this stage you should aim to improve on the
skills you have learnt within the project so far. Remember you final outcome needs to be fit for purpose.
