Whilebotharedesignedtoslowlyemitlowvoltagechargestoyourvehiclebattery,
restoringthebatterytoafullchargestatusoverseveralhours,thecriticaldifference
liesinthechargersabilitytoautomaticallyshutoffthechargecurrentandnot
overchargebatteries,whichcanleadtooverheatingandseriousdamage.Another
importantdifferenceistheabilityofsomemaintenancechargerstodesulfateand
cleanbatteryplates,restoringthemtonormaloperationandextendingbatterylife.

Tricklechargersaredesignedtomaintainachargeequaltotheselfdischargerateof
thebattery(2.23to2.25voltspercell)anditisrecommendedtheybedisconnected
fromthebatterytopreventthepossibilityofovercharging.Leavinganunattended
tricklechargeronfortoolongmightleadtooverheating,causingthebatterytoboil
theelectrolyte.Theoutcomewouldbeadeadbatteryoraworsecasescenarioa
possiblefire/explosion.

Amaintenancecharger(alsocalledafloatorsmartcharger),however,isatrue
plugandplayproductthattakesthehumanerrorelementoutofthebattery
chargingfunction.Maintenancechargerscanbeleftconnectedtothebattery
indefinitelywithoutriskofdamagetothebattery.

Batterymaintenancechargerscompletelyshutoffthechargecurrentoutputto
allowthebatterytosettle,andwhenthebatterysvoltagedropstoacertainpoint,
thechargerwillautomaticallyturnbackonandtopoffthebattery.Thisissafer
thanatricklecharger.
