Be careful not to pull the yarn too tightly at the beginning of a
row, to avoid distortion.
The broomstick needle needs to be held firmly. Try keeping
it firm by putting it under your arm or clamping it between
your knees. Use a smaller crochet hook to work the loops

LACE CROCHET
Crochet is the ideal technique for
creating lace. While solid fabrics in
crochet can become stiff and heavy,
the openness of lace adds lightness
and drape. Fine yarns make especially beautiful lace. The techniques
for making lace stitches vary, but it is
often common to work stitches into
spaces rather than into other stitches. Its not easy working into tiny
stitches, so working into spaces is a
big plus when youre using a fine
yarn and small hook.
In traditional crochet, finely
worked lace tablecloths and bedspreads become heirloom pieces.
While these larger pieces are usually created in motifs for ease in
working, smaller pieces are often
created as a single piece. Edgings
are another traditional application
for crocheted lace. Narrow bands
of lace add a charming touch to
linen towels and pillowcases.
Filet Crochet and Irish Crochet are
two popular forms of crocheted
lace. Filet crochet is a simple combination of double crochet and chain
stitches. The placement of these
stitches creates intricate patterns,
from simple shapes to words to
complete scenes. In Irish Crochet,
separate elaborate motifs are combined with an openwork crocheted
net or mesh ground fabric to create
a unique and distinctive effect.
In a luxurious yarn, even the simplest
combination of stitches and chains
can create a beautiful lace fabric.
Start out simply. Once you understand the concept of creating lace, the
possibilities become limitless.
