ThefirstintroductionofamutualfundinIndiaoccurredin1963,whentheGovernmentofIndia
launchedUnitTrustofIndia(UTI).Until1987,UTIenjoyedamonopolyintheIndianmutualfund
market.ThenahostofothergovernmentcontrolledIndianfinancialcompaniescameupwiththeirown
funds.TheseincludedStateBankofIndia,CanaraBank,andPunjabNationalBank.Thismarketwas
madeopentoprivateplayersin1993,asaresultofthehistoricconstitutionalamendmentsbrought
forwardbythethenCongressledgovernmentundertheexistingregimeofLiberalization,Privatization
andGlobalization(LPG).ThefirstprivatesectorfundtooperateinIndiawasKothariPioneer,which
latermergedwithFranklinTempleton.SEBIistheregulatorofmutualfunds.In1996,SEBIformulated
theMutualFundRegulationwhichisacomprehensiveregulatoryframework.[1]

Despitebeingavailableinthemarket[2]lessthan10%ofIndianhouseholdshaveinvestedinmutual
funds.ArecentreportonMutualFundInvestmentsinIndiapublishedbyresearchandanalyticsfirm,
BostonAnalytics,suggestsinvestorsareholdingbackfromputtingtheirmoneyintomutualfundsdueto
theirperceivedhighriskandalackofinformationonhowmutualfundswork.[3]Thereare46Mutual
FundsasofJune2013.[4]
Theprimaryreasonfornotinvestingappearstobecorrelatedwithcitysize.Amongrespondentswitha
highsavingsrate,closeto40%ofthosewholiveinmetrosandTierIcitiesconsideredsuchinvestments
tobeveryrisky,whereas33%ofthoseinTierIIcitiessaidtheydidnotknowhoworwheretoinvestin
suchassets.

MutualfunddistributioninIndia
Mutualfundinvestmentsaresourcedbothfrominstitutions(companies)andindividuals.SinceJanuary
2013,institutionalinvestorshavemovedtoinvestingdirectlywiththemutualfundssincedoingsosaves
ontheexpenseratioincurred.Individualinvestorsare,however,servedmostlybyInvestmentadvisor
andbanks.Since2009,onlineplatformsforinvestinginMutualfundshavealsoevolved.

AverageAssetsunderManagement

Assetsundermanagement(AUM)isafinancialtermdenotingthemarketvalueofallthefundsbeing
managedbyafinancialinstitution(amutualfund,hedgefund,privateequityfirm,venturecapitalfirm,
orbrokeragehouse)onbehalfofitsclients,investors,partners,depositors,etc.
