Today we are going to read Pete the Cat we are going
to put our listening ears on. Our mission today is to find
out what the main idea of this story is.
Big Idea Statement
The main idea of a book is important.

Readers have to understand how to identify the main

Readers need to be able to explain the main idea.
Objective Statement
Students will identify the main idea of Pete the Cat and

Transition:
Students that are wearing yellow come to the carpet,
Students wearing blue come to the carpet, and students
wearing red come to the carpet. Students wearing green
come to the carpet.
Transition:
I want you to groove back to your seats. (Explain what
groove means)

Say: We are going to read Pete the Cat and his Four
groovy buttons.
Say: Whenever I get to a number I need you to show me
what that number is with your fingers. (Demonstrate 2
fingers up when number two is read)
Ask: does anyone have an idea on what I want you to do
when I come to the word groovy? (Wiggle in your
square)
Guiding the Practice:
Read the book Pete the cat and his four groovy buttons.
Say: I want you to think about the main idea of the
story.
Now you are going to go back to the tables. There is
paper in the back and buttons; I dont want you to touch
the materials until I say so.
Transition:
Students that are wearing yellow go back to the tables,
Students wearing blue go back to the tables, and
students wearing go back to the tables. Students
wearing green go back to the tables.

I want you to take a few seconds and visualize the main
idea, what the book was about.
Say: You have 7 minutes to draw the main idea of the
story.
