"SummerSolstice"isashortstorythathasreceivedrecognitionbothcriticalandpraising.WrittenbyNickJoaquin,thestorytakesplacein1850sPhilippinesduringthe

untilGuidomakessuggestivecommentstoLupeng,andevenbendingdowntokissherfeet.Thismakesherleaveabruptlyandhaveadiscussionwithherhusband
thecomingnight.
LupengsecretlyfoundherselfintriguedbytheattentionofGuidoshefeltthathewascorrectinsayingthatwomenshouldberavishedandmenshouldadorethem.

isaboutwomenwantingtobefree.Lupengshatterstheconceptofthesuppressedwomanwhenshegainscontrolofherhusband,whokissesherfeetattheendof
story.Thismakesitseemasthoughtheinternalconflictwasthatwomenaretheoneswhowanttobetherulersofmen,asseenintheTatarinfestival.

realizehowshewisheswomencouldbeseeninthesameway.TheTatarinfestivalistheexactopposite,showingwomenasleadersoffertilitysincetheycarry
children.ThisfestivalisthelasttriggertomakeLupengfeelasthoughsheisstrongerthanamananddeservesadoration.
Symbolism
AmadaWhenLupengrushestofindhercook,Amada,sheseesherinacompromisingpositiononthebedwhichmakesLupengblushandfeelrestrainedabouther
ownsexuality.ThisisthefirsttriggerforLupengbeforesheannouncesshewantsadmiration.
