WHAT IS
IRON?
BY: ERIKA
YAP

Did you know that the food you eat such as eggs, beef, and
veggies are all high in Iron? Iron (Fe) is an element that keeps you
energetic so that you are able to play games like hide-n-seek and
tag for a longer time without getting tired. It also helps you focus
in school and understand your lessons clearly. This is because
Iron carries oxygen towards our muscles and brain helping us
perform better. So what are you waiting for? Eat healthy meals
throughout the day so you can work and play!

The Air We Breathe

By: Graciele Reganit
Inhale, exhale, inhale, exhale. Can you feel the
air come in and go out of your nose?
Thats right. Its called oxygen. You need
oxygen for your cells to function. Likewise, the
plants need the air we exhale, which is carbon
dioxide, in order for them to live. But did you
know that you do not only inhale oxygen and
exhale carbon dioxide? There are other gases
and particles around us. Gases from vehicles
and cigarette smoke is bad for your health. It
can cause diseases such as lung cancer, asthma,
and at worst, even death. Thats why you should
stay away from smokers and cover your nose
when the air is polluted. Also, engaging in
environmental activities such as tree planting,
or riding a bike and taking public transportation
would help prevent air pollution.

BROOOOOOOM! BROOOOOM! *cough* *cough*

What a bad smoke that car has! Didnt the driver
know that he is violating a law?
Y : H A46
RL
NE HUI
Republic Act No. 8749BSection
orEthe
Clean Air Act of the Philippines 1999
says that the vehicles must meet the
emission standards for the car to be
registered.
It means that before a car can be
registered, it needs to undergo an
emission test to know if that car emits
black smoke that can harm
the environment.

Frank Rowland was

born in Ohio, USA in
1927. Together with
Molina, they
discovered that
CFC(chlorofluorocarb
ons) decompose in
sunlight releases
chlorine atoms that
can convert ozone to
oxygen and can
attract other ozone
molecules.

Mario Molina is a
chemist and a
scientist who was
born on March 19,
1943 in Mexico. His
study about the
effect on Earth's
upper atmosphere of
man-made
compounds made him
and Rowland won
1995 Nobel Prize.

DID YOU KNOW?

By Erika Yap

Only about 3% of total earth water is

drinkable, the other 97% water is salt water

There is more carbon dioxide in the

atmosphere today than at any point in the
last 800,000 years
Air becomes liquid at about minus 190
degrees Celsius.

Each time lightning strikes, some Ozone gas

is produced, thus strengthening the Ozone
Layer in the Earth's atmosphere.

Mercury is the only metal that is liquid at

room temperature.

CHEM-I-KIDS | 15

The only letter not appearing on the

Periodic Table is the letter J.

Oxygen is the most abundant element in the

Earth's crust, waters, and atmosphere

The amount of carbon in the human body is

enough to fill about 9,000 'lead' pencils.

Most of the water in households goes

down the toilet.

A slight rise in sea level due to melting of ice

caps can drown many countries around the
world in the coastal areas

About the
authors
Tiger Chung
This girl who adores reading books, watching TV
series, and playing basketball graduated high school
from San Beda College Alabang. Aside from scoring
consistent As in chemistry class during her third year
in high school, she was assigned as the graphic
assistant editor of Bene 2015, her schools yearbook
club. She is an early childhood education student at
De La Salle University, and is planning to pursue BS
Chemistry because of her love for studying the
interaction between matter and energy.

Harlene Hui

Harlene, a consistent honor student during her

high school days at Chiang Kai Shek College, is
a fan of Pinterest, Wattpad, and Goodreads,
and the color violet. During her third year, she
took up chemistry, and developed an
admiration for studying the table of elements
and experimenting. Also, as a fourth year
student, she was awarded a Hokbu Award, for
sharing 50 hours of service to her community.

About the
authors
Yuna Noh
A former high school student at Southville
International School and Colleges, Yuna
believes that chemistry is everywhere in
everyday; and she was very fond of learning
new concepts during chemistry class in her
tenth grade. She is a college student at De La
Salle University, but despite a busy schedule,
she makes sure that she often gets quality
time with her friends.

Graciele Reganit
From the College of the Holy Spirit of Tarlac,
Graciele is pursuing her college studies at De La Salle
University. She was a member of The Shield, her
schools publication, and she joined and won several
writing competitions during her fourth year in high
school. For her, chemistry is interesting, especially
during experiments. Her interests also include
reading and writing; and she knows a thing or two
about swimming, and playing the keyboard.

About the
authors
Erika Yap
Erika, a star swimmer and a high school
graduate from De La Salle Santiago Zobel
School, is a lover of books, TV series, video
games, wellness and foreign places. During
high school, she had classes that focused on
