Gravitational acceleration = 10 m/s2.

1. A car is 500 m behind a truck. If the speed of the car is 80 km/h and the truck is 60 km/h, how long will it
take the car to reach the truck?

2. Two automobiles are 150 kilometers apart and traveling toward each other. One automobile is moving at
60km/h and the other is moving at 40km/h. In how many hours will they meet?

3. At a certain time a particle had a speed of 8 m/s to positive x direction, and 20 s later its speed was 10 m/s in
the opposite direction. What is the average acceleration of the particle during this 20 seconds interval?

4. A car moving with a velocity of 10 m/s accelerates at the rate of 4 m/s2 to reach a velocity of 30 m/s. What is
the time taken and its displacement in this time?

5. A jet lands at 80.0 m/s, applying the brakes 2.00 s after landing. Find the acceleration needed to stop the jet
within 1000 m.
6. A car is moving at 8.0 m/s. The driver makes it accelerate at 1.0 m/s2 for a distance of 18 m. What is the final
velocity of the car?

7. With what speed must a ball be thrown vertically from ground level to rise to a maximum height of 20 m?

8. The driver of a truck slams on the brakes when he sees a tree blocking the road. The truck slows down
uniformly with an acceleration of -5.0 m/s2 for 4.0 s, making skid marks 60 m long that end at the tree. With
what speed does the truck then strike the tree? (Hint: the truck actually hit the tree, so its speed must be
greater than zero).

9. An egg falls off a table. The floor is 0.8 m from the table-top. Calculate:
a. Time taken for the egg to reach the ground.
b. Velocity of the egg when it reaches the ground.

10. A ball thrown vertically upward is caught by the thrower after 4.0 s. Find :
a. the initial velocity of the ball
b. the maximum height the ball reaches

11. A police car P is stationary by the side of a road. A car S, exceeding the speed limit, passes the police car P
at a constant speed of 18 m/s. The police car P sets off to catch car S just as car S passes the police car P. Car
P accelerates at 4.5 m/s2 for a time of 6.0 s and then continues at constant speed. Car P takes a time t seconds
to draw level with car S. Calculate:
a. distance travelled by the police car P during the first 6.0 seconds of its motion.

b. speed of the police car P after it has completed its acceleration.

c. total time t taken for the police car P to draw level with car S.

12. Antonia stands at the edge of a vertical cliff and throws a stone vertically
upwards.
The stone leaves Antonias hand with a speed v = 8.0 m/s (all distance
measurements are taken from the point where the stone leaves Antonias
hand). Calculate:
a. the maximum height reached by the stone.

b. the time taken by the stone to reach its maximum height.

c. If the time between the stone leaving Antonias hand and hitting the sea is 3.0 s, determine the height of
the cliff.

13. An electric vehicle starts from rest and accelerates at a rate of 2.0 m/s2 in a straight line until it reaches a
speed of 20 m/s. The vehicle then slows at a constant rate of 1.0 m/s2 until it stops.
a. How much time elapses from start to stop?

b. How far does the vehicle travel from start to stop?

14. How far does the runner whose velocitytime graph is shown
in Fig. 2-37 travel in 16 s? The gures vertical scaling is set
by vs = 8.0 m/s.

15. A motorcyclist is moving at 30 m/s when the rider applies the brakes, giving the motorcycle a constant
deceleration. During the 3.0 s interval immediately after braking begins, the speed decreases to 15 m/s. What
distance does the motorcycle travel from the instant braking begin until the motorcycle stops?

16. A rock is dropped from a sea cliff, and the sound of it striking the ocean is heard (240/17) s later. If the speed
of the sound is 340 m/s, how high is the cliff?
