As the weather gets colder we tend to spend more and more time inside. Our tendency
then is to watch movies and T.V. shows as all of our outdoor forms of leisure are not an
option. But what movies and shows will we watch? It goes without saying that there are
many movies and shows out there which are harmful to our faith and our morals due to
immoral content that offends against Gods gift of Chastity (parents especially must take
great care that their children do not watch movies or T.V. that can lead to sinful
temptations). There are other movies and T. V. shows which do not necessarily have any
sinful content but are so bad (artistically speaking) that they are an offense to our brain
cells. I am pretty sure that every single time an episode of SURVIVOR aired, the national
I.Q. dropped several points. We should obviously avoid watching both material that is
sinful and can create opportunities to offend against chastity, as well as material that while
not sinful nevertheless leaves our brains starving.
One might think then that there is nothing worthwhile to watch especially nothing
that can enhance our Catholic Faith. This is not true. There is a large body of film which
is centered on true stories from both the Bible and the Lives of the Saints. The problem is
that many of these films were made in the 50s and 60s and have since been forgotten,
even by devout Christians. But most of these films are easily accessible on Amazon,
Netflix, or from Ignatius Press (www.ignatius.com). So during these cold winter months,
here are some films which will both entertain and edify ones faith: The Ten
Commandments, starring Charlton Heston. Ben Hur. Jesus of Nazareth. King of Kings.
A Man For All Seasons. Quo Vadis, starring Peter Ustinov. The Nativity. The Passion of
the Christ (not for kids). The Greatest Story Ever Told. Don Bosco. The Bells of Saint
Marys. And many more! I would recommend browsing the Ignatius Press catalogue
online to get access to even more great titles.
Let us all then this winter, avoid watching films which are either sinful in
content or low quality in art, and instead gather the family together to watch films
that can inspire our faith and teach us something about God and his saints.

STEWARDSHIP: GODS NOT STINGY

November is Stewardship Month for uswhen we hear

Father talk about developing the stewardship way of life.
Were called to give of our time, talent, and treasure all year,
but at this time, were asked to rethink it and arrive at what we
can live with financially. Its the only one of the three gifts that
can be measured with figures. We cant set a value on our time
or talent that we give all year toward our faith.
To determine financial giving, were assisted by the Churchs
proposal of 10% of our gross earnings or a lower percentage
of our net, also taking into consideration how many people
make up our household. Why do we give? Not all of us are at
the same place in our spiritual lives. Some want to see a return
on their money, how it is spent; others give, but want to see
their name on a plaque or in a book; some want to be thanked;
some dont care to see their names, but they want to feel good
about giving. Few of us give simply to show our Unselfish Love
of God. Yet, that is the motive for which we should strive.
Read Matthew 6: 1-4. (This article will be continued in next
weekends bulletin.)
