INTRODUCTION
The following report is all about study the structure of Hindustan Aeronautics
Limited(HAL).Hindustan Aeronautics Limited is one of Asia's largest aerospace
companies. This public sector company is mainly involved in aerospace industry,
which includes manufacturing and assembling aircraft, navigation and related
communication equipment, as well as operating airports.
Aviation is one of the most significant influences and it empowers
a nation with technological strength. HAL spread its wings to cover various
activities in the areas of design, development, manufacture and maintenance of
advanced fighters, piston and jet engine Trainers, commercial aircraft, helicopters
and the associated aero-engines, aircraft systems, equipment and avionics. Today,
HAL has 19 Production Units and 9 Research and Design Centers in 7 locations in
India. The Company has an impressive product track record - 12 types of aircraft
manufactured with in-house R & D and 14 types produced under license. HAL has
manufactured over 3550 aircraft , 3600 engines and overhauled over 8150
aircraft and 27300 engines.
ORIGIN OF THE HAL
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) came into existence on 1st October 1964.
The Company was formed by the merger of Hindustan Aircraft Limited with
Aeronautics India Limited and Aircraft Manufacturing Depot, Kanpur. the late Seth
Walchand Hirachand, who set up Hindustan Aircraft Limited at Bangalore in
association with the princely State of Mysore in December 1940. The Government
of India became a shareholder in March 1941 and took over the Management in
1942.
HAL has made substantial progress in various projects like

Dhruv, which is Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH)

Tejas - Light Combat Aircraft (LCA)

Intermediate Jet Trainer (IJT)


Dhruv has delivered to Indian army ,costal guards, Navy, in the very first
year of its production i.e. MARCH 2002 which is a unique achievement.

MAIN BUSINESS
Hindustan Aeronautics Limited plays a major tool in economic development and
has a significant role in national security and international relations. HAL has
spread its wings to cover various activities in the areas of design, development,
manufacture and maintenance of advanced fighters, piston and jet engine Trainers,
commercial aircraft, helicopters and the associated aero-engines, aircraft systems,
equipment and avionics.

CUSTOMER SERVICES
The Division has full-fledged infrastructure, facilities and systems for ensuring
optimum level of Customer satisfaction for the products and services rendered. The
major areas include:
Overhaul/Repair of Rotables ,Supply of Spares and other major units, Site Repair ,
Defect Investigation/Failure Analysis Product Training. As part of Customer
service, Technical and Logistic support including training are provided. Technical
support is rendered to the Customer in the following areas:

Maintenance and Repair of Aircraft


Compliance of Modification and Technical Instructions
Accident and Incident Investigations
Training of Customer's Personnel
On the Logistic side, the support is rendered in the following areas:
Supply of spares and Ground Handling and Ground Service Equipment
Supply of items against priority demands like AOG, USR / URR demands

As part of Customer service, Technical and Logistic support including training are
provided. Technical support is rendered to the Customer in the following areas:
Maintenance and Repair of Aircraft
Compliance of Modification and Technical Instructions
Accident and Incident Investigations
Training of Customer's Personnel
On the Logistic side, the support is rendered in the following areas:
Supply of spares and Ground Handling and Ground Service Equipment
Supply of items against priority demands like AOG, USR / URR demands

Turn Key Basis - Design and Construction of Engine Test Beds.The Helicopter
Division offers service to customers on Upgrade of Helicopters. Development of
modifications to introduce new systems to improve performance and make the
helicopters more efficient and cost-effective
Development of modifications as desired by the Customers .Maintenance of civil
helicopters
Technical services like issue of amendments to the Product Literature including
Illustrated Parts Catalogue (IPC), Flight Manuals, Maintenance Manuals, Overhaul
Manuals and Repair Manuals .The Helicopter Division has undertaken major
servicing of more than 200 Helicopters and has developed more than 110
modifications in Chetak and 57 modifications in Cheetah to provide for indigenously
developed equipment and to cater to new requirement of the Customers. Cat `B'
repairs also have been carried out on more than 75 Helicopters for various
Customers.The Helicopter Division is also the maintenance agency for some of the
Civil Helicopters and carries out the T1/T2 inspection on schedule.The Division has
equipped the Chetak Helicopters of the Indian Navy for MATCH role as well as for
the arduous Antarctica missions.
The Division follows the 'Flow Line Group Technology' with the Engine parts being
dismantled, viewed and loaded to different work centres.Regular follow-up through
PC ensures timely completion of sub-assemblies.The stripped components are subject
to detailed micrometric and Non Destructive Testing (NDT) checks. Repair and
refurbishing of worn-out parts and sub-assemblies are undertaken by skilled
workmen.

Major Servicing of Aircraft


The Overhaul Division has to its credit a sound infrastructure to cater to the
customer's needs ranging from maintenance of Piston Engine Aircraft to the state-ofthe-art aircraft like Mirage 2000. From its inception, the Overhaul Division has
serviced over 3500 Aircraft of different types. Currently, it is the only organization
authorized to undertake major inspection of Mirage 2000 Aircraft outside France for
global customers. The management of these maintenance activities is through
sophisticated computer systems with extensive interaction between the user and the
maintenance agency through the electronic medium. The Mirage 2000 major
inspection line is equipped with modern ground support, ground handling equipment
and testers conforming to the specifications of M/s Dassault Aviation. The line is
supported by a host of highly skilled technicians and qualified Engineers, trained at
M/s Dassault Aviation as well as at other original equipment manufacturers of the
various systems.Logistics management include computer based vertical storage
system for kit marshal stores and mobile storage system for spares. Environmental
control for LRU storage has been incorporated to meet the advanced technology
requirements. The Overhaul Division is the approved repair agency for carrying out
major servicing of Jaguar Aircraft and its accessories. All the three versions namely
Strike, Trainer and Maritime undergo major servicing at the Overhaul Division. The
Division also undertakes the compliance of the Company Special Technical
Instruction (CSTI), Company Service Instruction (CSI) developed by HAL and
compliance of modifications as per Standard Of Preparation (SOP). Kiran Mk-I / IA,
