Description/Background information

Gladys

She is a wealthy young woman who is engaged

and terribly concerned with helping the
soldiers overseas. she wants to see the axis
powers lose and to really find her
independence.

James

He is a wealthy educated young American man

who is interested in creating a big contract
with Withems foods and Gladyss father. He is
engaged to Gladys. America has not yet joined
the war, but if it does, he will sign up and do
his duty overseas.

Bob

A war veteran of World War I. He is disabled

and in a wheelchair. He is married to Lorna
and they have three children, Bob is depressed,
and has a hard time coping with his lack of
ability to be the breadwinner for his family.

Lorna

She is the shift matron for the blue shift at

victory munitions. She watches out for the
girls on her line and works very hard to
improve their treatment at the factory. She is
married to Bob. They have three children,
Stanley, Eugene and Sheila. Stanley and
Eugene are overseas in the war.

Sheila

She is Lornas daughter. She is working at the

hospital as a nurse to help aid the war effort
and support her family.

Marions Father

A harsh and bitter street preacher. He is

abusive to his wife and daughter, he could also
be abusive to his sons but it is never stated. He

screams at passersby about their sins as his

daughter and a few other young girls sing
beautiful hymns.
Marion (Kate)

Her mother helps her purchase false papers to

get her a home and job away from her father.
her new name is Kate Andrews and she works
at victory munitions.

Gladyss Mother

A woman used to a pampered lifestyle who

also expects her daughter to behave and enjoy
life in a similar manner to her. She cares about
gaining money to further her riches, but only
by supporting the primary breadwinner, her
husband.

Gladyss father

The owner of Withems foods. A local grocery

business that he has dreams to go national with
a contract from the military to be the main
provider of soldier meals. he does not take
Gladyss interest in the war effort seriously and
believes it is just a phase.

Betty

A young blonde woman who is living on her

own. She lives across the hall from Kate, and
becomes instant friends with her. It is revealed
late into the first season that Betty is
homosexual and is interested in Kate. Betty
also dreams of owning her own home one day.

Marco

A man who was born in italy and moved to

canada when he was two. His dad was
suspected to be a fascist and sent to an
internment camp in Petawawa. This causes a
concern around him that he may also be a
fascist. It is revealed late in the first season that
he is not a fascist and never even knew his

father actually was one.

Mr. Aikins

The boss at victory munitions. He is not

pleased with women working in the factory
and finds them incapable. He will do anything
to protect his men, but will fire a woman with
first chance he gets.

Gladyss friend

She starts working with Gladys in the office.

She also has a chatty personality. She often
talks about others loudly and has no care if
they hear the potentially harmful things she
can say.

Edith

A woman with two children and a husband off

at war. She is told her husband wss killed in
the war and it crushes her. she is unsure how to
tell her children, so she chooses not to tell
them.

Vera

A girl who worked on the factory floor, one

day she get distracted by Marco, and she gets
hooked to the bomb rack. She falls from the
rack tearing her scalp and leaving her
permanently disfigured. Eventually toward the
end of the first season she begins to work in
the office.

Archie

A man who worked in the factory, he wants to

sleep with Vera, and when he gets injured in a
bomb testing is left disabled and is in the same
hospital as Vera.
