Introduction

Correlation

refers

to

technique

used

to

measure

the

relationship between two or more variables. When two things are

correlated, it means that they vary together. Science is correlated
with othe subjects. Correlation of science with other subjects can be
of two types. Incidental correlation and systematic correlation.
Science subject is correlated with mathematics, Biology, Geography,
History, Geology etc. Science subject is also correlated with music,
arts, craft work, environment and life.
Correlation is the relationship between two or more variable.
Science subject is correlated with other subjects. Correlation of
science with other subjects can be of two types
1.incidental Correlation
2.Systematic Correlation

Incidental correlation
It is natural correlation. Correlation would means a broad
treatment of the subject that brings about points of similarities
between science and other related subjects. The success of
incidental correlation depends on
a). Wide Knowledge
b). Versatility of the science teacher
While teaching about O2, teacher says about hemoglobin,
carrier of O2 and mountaineers use O2 carrier
While teaching about the structure of atom correlated with
history by telling about Kanada muni and the progress of
science in ancient India.
Teaching about eye correlates with a camera and the formation
of image in convex lens.

Systematic Correlation
Systematic Correlation with the other subject is achieved by a
organization of achieved by a careful organization of curriculum in
different subjects avoiding unnecessary duplication of the subject
matter and the same time developing related topics from different
subjects. Systematic correlation can be effective only when the
teachers of different subjects co-ordinate their work. This achieved
by the careful planning of curriculum.

Correlation of science with other subjects

Correlation of science with Mathematics.
Mathematics is probably the sole language of science and
therefore a real understanding of science is impossible without
adequate knowledge of mathematics, Algebraic equations, graph,
geometry, co-ordinate geometry, calculus, simple statistics are
some of the useful tools of Science.
Some examples are.
Qualitative work in Gas laws and calculations of chemical
equations should come after proportion has been studied in
mathematics.
Simple ideas of statistics are essential before dealing with
genetics.
Knowledge of trigonometrical ratios is very helpful mechanics
and light
Kinetic theory of gases needs the knowledge of co-ordinate
geometry
Even simple measurements of area and space require the
knowledge of mathematics. In teaching mathematical principles
plenty of examples are drawn from the field of science subjects like

mathematical

physics,

mathematical

chemistry,

applied

mathematics, dynamics, and ratio in Boyles law, graphs in the

study of falling body and cooling curve.

Correlation of Physical Science with Biology

The study of natural sciences such as zoology, botany and
physiology owe to physics and chemistry to explain some common
phenomena.
Some examples are :
Respirations in plants, photosynthesis are explained by
chemistry.
Absorption and evaporation of water, assimilation of food
taken from the soil and atmosphere are explained by physics
and chemistry.
Movements of joints and actions of the various parts of the
human body are explained by Physics in working of levers.
Nature and value of different food materials required by man is
explained by chemistry.
Modern ways of mechanical farming and harvesting require of
Physical science.

Correlation of Science With history

Some kind of correlation can exist in between the science and
history which coincide with important scientific discoveries. Certain
discoveries and inventions took place in reign of certain famous
wings who patronized the scientists, It is useful to mention event
sin the world history.
Some examples are:
Achievements and the king Syracuse. Archimedes found a
solution to a problem, when the king asked him to examine the
purity of his crown. Archimedes got the royal patronage in his
search for scientific truth
Correlation with science and history is very prominent in topics
like the story of moon, story of earth, story of man and story of

planets; it is useful to mention events in the world history

which coincide with the important discoveries and inventions.
A chemistry teacher while teaching about iron and steel
correlates incidentally with history by telling about the famous
Delhi pillar and the metallurgical skill of the people of
Ayurvedic period.

Correlation of Science with Earth Science

Earth science is the science of planet earth. It is the subject in
which various concepts relating to earth on which we live are dealt
with. Which kind of crop should be soon in which kind of soil , how
many kind of rocks are found on the earth are some of the main
topic. One will be surprise by this fact as these topics are also
covered by the subject of science. In science, various concepts
relating to the atmosphere and earth in which living and non-living
beings

exist

are

made.

Temperature

wind

directions

and

measurement of rain fall are conducted in the subject of science by

making use f various apparatus. Results obtained by the science in
terms of climate and manner in which it affect the human beings
and earth are being interpreted by subject of Geography. H S
Studies include the following.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.

The water cycle and process of transpiration.

Oceanography
Atmosphere of earth
Characteristics and formation of fossils.
Soil science
Geomorphology and geophysics
Earths tectonic structure

Correlation of Science with language

Although Science is practical subject , it is very important for
its learners to be able to express their views and ideas in clear and

attractive form. For this purpose , it is necessary that they would

have through knowledge of language which they use. Student who
does not have good control over the language cannot express his
views and various scientific laws and principle in front of others.
The pupils of science often have to write essays on scientific topics
on invention and life history of scientists and notes on their
laboratory experiments. They could be encouraged to write in
distinct lucid language. Science and language teaches have equal
responsibilities in developing clear and accurate expression. To corelate science with language subjects. Students can be asked to
write essays on some scientific topic. If student make any kind of
grammatical mistake, then the teacher can ask him to make him
correction in his language. Likewise language teacher can give the
task of writing about some scientific happening in the assignment
designed for them. In this manner, he can correlate science with the
language.

Correlation of Science with Geography

Geography is the subject in which various concepts relating to
earth on which we live are dealt with. Every thing existing on earth,
on different planets of the universe is also main subjects of
geography. In science, various concepts relating to the atmosphere
and earth in which living and non-living being existed are made. For
this reason, temperature, wind directions and measurement of
rainfall are conducted in the subject of science by making of various
apparatus. Results obtained by the science in terms of climate and
the manner in which it affects the human being and earth are being
interpreted by subject of Geography. These are various topics which
are of common interest for geographers and scientists. Thus, it can
be said that both of these subjects are complementary to each
other. Both of these subjects are very near to each other, thus

science teacher will not find any kind of problem in relating science
with the subjects of geography. Physical geography is based on
scientific principles so it can be correlated with physical science.
Facts of climates and season depends on elementary nations of
scientific principles.
Eg:
Instruments like barometer, sundial, max-min thermometer,
rain gauge, magnetic needle etc used by geographer are
common to science also.
The study of sea-bed, sea erosion, fisheries, transport etc can
be correlated with science
Principles
of
evaporation,

condensation,

convection,

crystallization has their practical application in geography.

Rotation of planets, their influence on climate, change of
season, flow of ocean current, structure of earth strata, action
of volcanoes, earthquakes are best under stood when
geography is studied with the aid of physics and chemistry.

Correlation of Science and music

In our nation, music has its own importance as different kinds
of songs are found in different part of the nation. To encourage
people and especially student s to involve themselves in professions
having

their

roots

in

music,

this

has

been

accepted

as

an

independent subject in various schools and institutions and it forms

on integral

part of school curriculum. For the students of music,

knowledge of resonance, vibration system in strings and air columns

is very necessary and important. To make improvement in their
voice and manner of singing, various scientific equipments are
being used today, which could not come into being without scientific
developments. Thus, it is only through the utilization of scientific
development of various apparatus used in the musical field. Science

teacher can relate subject of science with the music by narrating

the students that what led to development of various equipments
used by the musicians and on which principles do they operate as
function.

Correlation of Science and Art.

It is considered by the majority of people that it is science who
has contributed a great deal in developing the field of art, but this
not true, as both of these subjects as areas has played important
roles in considering each other. All types of arts have got enriched
as a result of scientific developments, but it is not possible for
science teacher to impart information relating to various facts and
principles without having through control over the art. As known
that science is a practical subject, as a result of which, science
teacher is required to draw various kinds of diagrams, models and
charts, which cannot be performed unless he does not have sound
artistic skills. Not only this, it is equally important for an artist to
have thou rough knowledge of scientific principles, as without it, he
will find difficult to keep the color contrast of his images in
attractive and controlled position. An artist should know the
principles of light and shade, objects and background for drawing or
keeping the color contrast in attractive conditions. Thus it can be
said that some common features are found in the subject of science
and art, because of which they can be co-related with each other
effectively.

Correlation of science and Craft Works

Some people will find it quite unsound to relate science and

craft works with each other, but various kinds of improvements can
be brought about in ability of students to understand various
scientific principles and facts. During craft periods, students can be
provided with the task of designing various pieces of scientific
apparatus and equipments. Though such step, scientific interest can
be developed in the students, which will help in arousing the
interest of student sin various scientific incidences. An urge will get
developed in them to see or observe the equipment s or apparatus
designed by them in reality, by which they will be motivated to get
more and more information regarding the research functions
conducted in the scientific field through various means and sources.

Correlation of Science and Life

We know a bodys biological system run on chemical reactions.
As examples, teach students about enzymes and how they govern
the chemical reactions inside cells. Explain that these reactions are
what keep an organism alive, and when a bodys chemistry does not
function as it should, the organism become ill. Cite cannier as
example of an illness caused by malfunctioning enzymes. This
illustrates the co-relation of chemistry with life.
Teach students that neither cells nor their components are
stationary. Molecules within cells that interact to keep the cell
functioning must move around. Which requires force. Bacteria or
viruses moving through the blood stream and sperm also use sarie .
Biologists study these movements in sarie velocity, making biology
overlap with physics.

Correlation of science and Environment

Consider for example that neither people nor protozoa nor

anything else would exist without the sun, water, soil, rocks,
nutrients, air and other non-living components on our environment.
Our bodies follow the laws of physics and chemistry. Our habitats
are shaped by gravity and weather. Even the moon and the stars
figure in, turning the tide and guiding migrating animals, many
environmental issues, such as water pollution, energy conservation,
and global climate change, are grounded in the physical science.
Lessons on the environment provide a good opportunity to
introduce physical science concepts. Similarly, many physical
science lessons are an open door to environmental topics. Here are
some ideas for blending the two:

Hold a non living scavenger hunt. Search outdoors for non

living things. Barnstorm how they affect living things , and

how living things affect them.

Explore the physics of water: look at how plants and animals
take advantage of them for everything from getting nutrients
so the top of a tree to being able to hibernate at the bottom of

a pond without freezing.

Consider how weather and climate influence the world around
us.
Discuss

global

climate

change

and

how

it

might

affect

Minnesotas environment.
Look at how Physical principles shape living things
Find example of simple machines in animal bodies. Link
engineering principles with the shapes of trees. Talk about

animal shape , size, and function

Study cycles: Explore how water, nitrogen and phosphorus
travel through the environment.

Conclusion
As known that far over all development of the students,
various subjects are being included in the curriculum. Generally
those subjects are included in the curriculum which is sound to be
complementary to each other , as the main objective of all of them
is to achieve. Set objective of education that is to bring about over
all development of the students. Science is a quite complex

and

vast kind of subject, because of which the task of subject, because

of which the task of correlating it with other subjects of curriculum
seems to be quite an easy task. Deliberate effort should be done by
the science teacher

to bring about co-relation in between the

science and other subjects of the curriculum. Correlation of science

with other subjects make learning powerful.
