Site Visit No: - 1.

Location: - Kotarpur, Airport Road, Ahmedabad

Salient features of site:

Asias largest capacity water treatment plant

Area of water works 870105 m2
Capacity Plant capacity- 650 MLD , Overloading capacity 715 MLD ( 2% losses are considered)
Year of construction 1987 , Plant commissioned year 2000
Complete testing facility of water at plant
The pump of the plant are equipped with Non return valve which stops the backflow of water.

Source of water: - 1. Primary source Main Narmada Canal (through gravity)

2. Secondary source 2 intake wells (Raska-Sabarmati River)

Process of water treatment:1. Feeding of water from 2500 mm dia. pipe of Narmada canal (through gravity caused by elevation difference of
4.5 m of inlet bay and canal) and 1800 mm dia. pipes of 2 intakes-Raska.
2. The water is collected from sources to Inlet bay (Top water level - 62.44 m).
3. For mixing of dosage of alum and Pre-chlorination, Hydraulic jump is provided in inlet bay.
4. The distribution box is provided to divide the floe in 3 streams of 12 clarifloculators.
5. Then the water passes through the fine mesh screens (at 30 to 45 degree) which stops the floating debris to
enter in the clariflocculators.
6. The water enter in the clarifier where sulphate alum (positively charged) is mixed. It reacts with the water
impurities negatively charged particle and floc is formed.
7. To increase the floc formation rate a rotary blade is provided in the flocculator so comparatively more weighted
floc settle down.
8. The bottom of the clariflocculator has a sloping bottom which allows settled flocs to go to sedimentation tank.
9. Then from sedimentation tank, sludge is removed from sludge pit at frequent interval.
10. The clear water comes our form upper side of clarrifloculator by means of cutouts or weir of circular shape and
supplied to filter bed by water channel.
11. The supplied water is stored in filter house having 3 rows of 16 filter bed which has uniformly graded course
silica sand of 750 mm thick so that the impurities settle in media used for filtration.
12. The last stage is chlorination of water to remove bacteria and viruses and smell.
13. The water is stored in the underground storage tank of 80,000,000 liters (175 lakh gallon) capacity.
14. Then water is supplies in East and West Ahmedabad by 10 pumps having capacity of 41, 00,000 liter/hr.
