The value of the voltage shall he such as to produce a secondary current of rms
value equal to the rated secondary current (in the case of a current transformer
with an extended range, a current equal to the extended range secondary

Results to be obtained:

The applied voltage shall be withstood satisfactorily for one minute.

5.1.1.2.5.
Partial discharge tests in accordance with
IS 11322: 1985.NOTE -This test is applicable only
for current transformers with solid insulation for
highest system voltages 7.2 kV and above and
current transforms with liquid immersed
insulation for highest system voltages of 72.5 kV
and above.
5.1.1.2.5.1.
Requirement of Equipments
testing:
Partial Discharge Tester
5.1.1.2.5.2.
Measuring Instruments:

for

The measuring instrument used shall comply with 3.4 of IS: 6209- 1982.
The instrument used will depend on the quality to be measured and the quality
preferred in this standard is the apparent charge q expressed in Pico coulombs
(pC).

NOTE - Wideband measurement of partial discharges with a bandwidth of at least

100 kHz offers certain advantages especially where test objects with distributed
capacity and inductance are concerned. Normally, however, a narrow band
measurement of partial discharges is sufficient for instrument transformers,
particularly if there is a possibility of choosing between measuring frequencies in
the range 015 MHz to 2 MHz Preferred values are 0.5 MHz and 1 MHz, but, if
feasible, the measurement should be performed at the frequency which gives the
highest sensitivity.
5.1.1.2.5.3.

Testing Procedure:

The partial discharge test shall be carried out after all dielectric tests are
completed. The applied voltage shaI1 be raised to the pre stress voltage (values
given in Table 1) before reducing it to the partial discharge measuring voltage
also given in below Table 3.

Note 1: If there is no clear distinction to be made for which kind of network (star

for the isolated star point shall be taken.
Note 2: Where the rated voltage of a voltage transformer is considerably lower
than its declared highest system voltage Um, then, subject to agreement
between manufacturer and customer, lower pre-stress voltages may be chosen.
Note 3: these values apply only if agreed between manufacturer and customer.
NOTE 4 - Alternatively, the partial discharge test may be performed while
decreasing the voltage after the power frequency withstand voltage. If the
measured partial discharge values exceed the permitted limits of Table 3, a
separate test as specified above may be carried out.
5.1.1.2.5.4.

Permissible partial discharge levels:

Preferred values for the permissible levels of partial discharges are given in Table
3. These values are found by experience to guarantee reasonably reliable
products at reasonable cost. Whenever it is possible to clearly distinguish
between higher background disturbances and the partial discharges arising from
the test object, these higher disturbances may be permissible if agreed by
manufacturer and the customer.
5.1.1.2.5.5.
Results to be obtained:
All the partial discharges should be within limits that mentioned in Table 3.

Note: 1.The determination of errors of other characteristics in (5) shall be carried
out after the tests (2), (3) and (4). The order or possible combination of other
tests is not standardized.
2. Repeated power frequency tests on the primary windings shall be
performed at 80 percent of the specified test voltage.
5.1.1.3. Optional Tests:
The following tests where applicable, shall be carried out by mutual agreement
between the purchaser and the manufacturer:
5.1.1.3.1.
Chopped lightning impulse test as a type

5.1.1.3.2.
Measurement of dielectric dissipation
factor for oil immersed current transformers of
72.5 kV and above.
The measurement of dielectric dissipation factor (tan 6) shall be made after the
power frequency test on the primary windings. The ambient temperature and the
temperature of the equipment under test shall be between 10C and 40C. The
measurement of tan shall be made by means of a Schering Bridge or other
equivalent method.
The test voltage, which shall be agreed between the manufacturer and the
purchaser but in no case exceeding the highest system voltage divided by fi,
shall be applied to the primary terminals connected together. The secondary
terminals, any screen and isolated metal casing shall be connected to the
measuring bridge. If the transformer has a special device (terminal) suitable for
the measurement, the other terminals shall be short-circuited and connected to
the earthed or the screened metal casing..

PROCEDURE FOR CURRENT TRANSFORMER

The test object and the reference capacitance is set on high voltage, the
balancing

(Fig. 1).
The balancing condition is fulfilled in the case of same electric potential on both
ends of the null indicator respectively no current flow through the null indicator.
The accuracy of measurement depends essentially on the sensitivity of the null
indicator. The balancing condition can be described with following formula:
Zx / Z3 = ZN / Z4
Tan= CXRX = C4R4

PROCEDURE FOR CURRENT TRANSFORMER

power frequency tests on the primary winding insulation may be made after
erection on site provided that the transformer is in a satisfactory conditions for

Measurement of
Composite Error
Current transformer having a
turns ratio 1:1 is shown in
Fig. 4. It is connected to a
source of primary (sinusoidal)
current, a secondary burden
with linear characteristics,
and to an ammeter in such a manner that both the primary and the secondary
current pass through the ammeter, but in opposite
directions. In this manner the resultant current through the ammeter will be
equal to the exciting
current under the prevailing conditions of sinusoidal primary current and the rms
value of that current, related to the rms value of the primary current, is the
composite error according to the definition.
5.1.3.2.2.3. Results to be obtained:
Obtained composite error should within the limits mentioned in Table 6.

5.1.4.For Protective Current transformer for special purpose

Applications:
Specification limits should be as per IS 2705 (Part 4):
Protective current transformers for special purpose applications shall be
designated Class PS.

5.1.4.2.5.
Test Procedure:
5.1.4.2.5.1.
Knee-Point Voltage and Exciting
Current.
A sinusoidal voltage at rated frequency equal to the rated knee-point voltage
shall be applied to the
Secondary terminals, all other windings being open circuited and the exciting
current shall be measured. The voltage shall then be increased by 10 percent
and the exciting current shall not increase by more than 50 percent. The voltage
shall then be reduced to the values corresponding to the specified percentages
of the knee-point voltage and the exciting current shall be measured at each
such voltage. The exciting currents at the knee-point voltage and the specified
percentages thereof shall not exceed the specified limits.
5.1.4.2.5.2.
Secondary Winding Resistance.
The resistance of the secondary winding shall be measured and the value, when
corrected to 75C shall not exceed the value specified (if any ).
5.1.4.2.5.3.
Turns Ratio.
The turns ratio shall be determined and shall not differ from the specified ratio
by more than of 0.25 percent. For the method of measurement of turns ratio,
5.1.4.2.6.

Results to be obtained:

The error in turns ratio shall not exceed 0.25 percent.

The knee-point voltage shall not be less than the specified rated knee-point
voltage.
The exciting current(s) shall not be greater than the specified value.
When specified, the resistance of the secondary winding, corrected to 75OC,
shall not be greater than the specified value.
