I write this note at the end of remembrance day and from the year 6
excursion to Canberra. We have participated in some amazing events
but today has been special. We visited parliament house and the war
memorial. Both places as always were a buzz with lots of young people
and today more than ever with veterans and their families. Our young
people were great; respectful, interested and excited by everything.
The poppies are such a wonderful symbol of remembrance and peace.
They were first touted as the symbol for remembrance and the loss of
life in war in about 1916 surprisingly. A young Canadian officer, John
McCrae wrote a beautiful poem titled 'In Flanders Fields' which begins
with the line 'In Flanders fields the poppies blow between the crosses
row on row.' As we walked along the memorial wall adorned with the
little paper poppies stuck between the rows of names I couldn't help
but ponder how it must have been for McCrae and the thousands of
other young men and women who fought and died in all the wars of
history. McCrae died soon after he wrote the poem sadly. Somewhere
in the midst of mud and blood he was inspired to write such beautiful
words that inspired such an amazing movement and a way for all of us
who've come after, to reflect and to remember.
If you have visited the war memorial you will have been struck by the
sense of peace that pervades there. It is no memorial to war. It is such
an appropriate way to remember those who died for peace and as a
way to remember the need for peace. In the chapel for the unknown
soldier at the end of the walkway with the eternal flame, there are
some wonderful coloured windows. Emblazoned in the windows are
the words that embody community and are at the heart of how we see
ourselves as a nation. They are also so much a part of how we see
ourselves as a church. I would love to put them all here but to name
just a few: loyalty, chivalry, ancestry, comradeship, curiosity, devotion,
endurance, candour.
'In Flanders fields then poppies blow between the crosses, row on row
that mark our place: and in the sky the larks, still bravely sing and fly,
scarce heard amid the guns below'.
Best wishes,

Greg

Reflection by Dianne Bergant CSS

Although this is not the last Sunday of the
liturgical year, the major theme found in the
readings is the end of time. The events that will
usher in and will take place during this time are
described in apocalyptic terms. The struggles of
life will culminate in a massive cosmic
confrontation between the forces of good and
those of evil. This last battle will be universal in
scope, just like the first primordial conflict
between chaos and God.
In some way, all of todays readings state that
good will finally prevail over evil. In the last days
Michael, the angelic warrior of God, will rise up.
In the epistle, Christ is pictured seated
triumphantly at the right hand of God with his
enemies under his foot, a sign of conquest.
Finally, in the gospel, the Son of Man, the
mysterious figure from apocalyptic literature,
comes in the clouds with great power and glory.
All of these images are apocalyptic; each of them
is quite hopeful.
We read these stories at the close of the
liturgical year, because we are coming to the
conclusion of our yearly telling of the story of
salvation. However, apocalyptic images are
timely whenever we find ourselves in the throes
of the battle with evil and it appears that we will
succumb. These forms will remind us that good
will be able to withstand evil. From this we will
conclude that we need only trust in God.
