V. LEARNING MATERIAL
The acidity power
Electrolyte substances that are most ionized called strong electrolyte, while ionize
in a little amount are called weak electrolyte. The power of acid and base will be
described in the degree of ionization and the constant of ionization equlibrium.
The ionization degree
The ionization degree ( ), is the comparison between the amount of ionized
substances with the first amount of substances

jumlah zatyangmengion
jumlahzatmula mula

If the substances ionized perfectly its degree of ionization = 1. If the substances are not
ionized its degree of ionization= 0. So, the value of the degree of ionization is 0 <

<1

The constant of acid ionization (Ka)

The equilibrium constant of acid ionization is symbolized by Ka. For the weak acid
HA and the formula of ionization constant is like this.
Ka

H A

HA

The relationship between the constant of acid ionization (Ka) with the degree of
ionization ( )
If the concentration of electrolyte (first substance) is M molar, so the equation is:

jumlah zat yang mengion

M

If the composition of this equilibrium is distributed into the equation of the constant of
acid equilibrium:

Ka

M M
M 1

By use assumption (1- )

Ka

So,

1, so the equation above becomes:

Calculating the pHof acid solution

The ways to predict the pH of acid solution based on the concentration and the
relates acidity power.
a) Strong acid
It has been told that the strong acid are ionized perfectly, the pH of solution can
be determined if the concentration of acid is known.

H M valensi asam

b) Weak acid
Weak acid dont ionized perfectly, so the concentration of H+ cant be related
stochiometricly with the concentration of acid.

Ka M

c) Strong base

Or

H M

As like as strong acid, the pH of strong base solution can be determined only by
knowing the concentration of base.

OH M valensi basa

d) Weak base
The pH of weak base solution can be determined in same basic of the
determination of weak acid pH, if the concentration and the constant of base ionization
or the degree of ionization are known. The relationship of OH- ion concentration with
the degree of ionization and the constant of base (Kb) can be written like this:

OH M

Kb M
