1.0 Introduction
The term HRM means the process of managing people in organizations in a structured
and thorough manner. This covers the fields of staffing (hiring people), retention of people,
pay and perks setting and management, performance management, change management and
taking care of exits from the company to round off the activities.
Human resources management involves several processes. These processes can be
performed in an HR department. The HR departments responsibilities have gradually
become broader and more strategic since the days when business people began including
personnel departments in their organization charts. In the earliest firm, personnel first took
over hiring and firing from supervisors ran the payroll department and administered benefit
plans. As technology in areas like testing and interviewing began to emerge, the personnel
department began to play an expanded role in employee selection, training and promotion.
HRM is a board concept of personnel management (PM) and human resource
development (HRD) is a part of HRM. HRM has four objectives namely - 1) societal, 2)
organizational, 3) functional and 4) Personal.
Two issues arise when one talks about the organizations of HR function 1) status of
the HR department in the overall setup and 2) composition of the department itself. Both
depend upon the scale of operations and attitude of top management towards HRM.
Outsourcing will have negative impact on HR department.
An organization must have set policies, definite procedures and well-definite
procedures and well defined principles relating to its personnel. These contributed to the
effectiveness, continuity and stability of the organization. Even since its inception in the 4 th
century BC, the HRM functions have gone a long way and have assumed a professional
status today.
