SUMMARY OF THE LITERATURE SEARCH

31.0

The research is about the review of rapid prototyping technology and future

potential development. Rapid prototyping refer to a group of technique that can fabricate a scale
model of physical part using 3D CAD data. The technique was created to help engineer to
realizing their idea. Process in making 3D object is created by thin layer of material is laying
down layer by layer. There are several technique of rapid prototype which is Stereo Lithography
(SLA), Laminate Object Manufacture (LOM), Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), Fused Deposition
Modelling (FDM), 3D Ink jet printing, and Solid Ground Curing (SGC). Basic process in making
3D object is starting from create CAD model of design, convert CAD file into STL format, slice
the STL file, construct layer by layer, and lastly clean and finishing process. The advantage when
using rapid prototyping is help engineer to realizing their idea, allow creation of printed part, and
just a model, reduce time and cost , possible to create almost any shape and lastly , doctor can
build a model of damage body to analyze in and plan better procedure. Even though there are a
lot of advantage when using this technology, some company still choose not to use rapid
prototyping technology. Many user in Europe are not working with 3D CAD and some of them
are not understand with rapid prototyping (Baron, 1995). Besides that, rapid prototype widely
used in automotive, aerospace, medical, and customer product industries.

RESEARCH PROBLEM AND FUTURE DEVELOPMENT

34.0

Several problem have been identified from the review of rapid prototyping.

Firstly, STL format use planar element and it cannot represent curve surface exactly. Secondly,
rapid prototyping machine still slow by some standard. Thirdly, commercially available machine
are accurate to 0.08mm in x-y plane but less in z (vertical) direction. Lastly, the problem occur is
plastic prototype work well for visualization and fit test but they are often too weak for
functioning testing. However, from the problem occur, there are several development that will
help the manufacture. One such improvement is increasing speed, improve accuracy and surface
finish.
