WHAT TO FACTOR IN?

As much as many of us cant wait to start soaking up the sun for

that glowing tan weve seen in numerous bikini shoots of late (not to
mention that much needed dose of vitamin D), theres quite a bit we
need to factor in get it? before getting started.
Lying half naked on a sun lounger or picnic blanket might be your
idea of heaven but sunscreen is an absolute must! But with so many
different products to choose from, including instant tanning gels and
gradual tan lotions, which sun protect factor (SPF) is right for you?
The higher the SPF in fact, the better. But then again, it all depends
on how long you intent on being out in the sun! For an average day like any other, commuting
to and from work and popping out of the office simply to pick up lunch, you could probably get
away with wearing moisturiser with SPF15. A hat and sunglasses never hurt anyone and while
they make quite the style statement, these accessories do offer protection for your scalp and eyes;
shielding you from harmful UV rays.
Malibu Lotion SPF30 requires a lot less re-application than any SPF15 lotion. So if youre
planning on taking a few dips in the pool, this water resistant lotion might just be what youre
looking for. Boasting high protection with Pro-Vitamin B5 and Vitamin E, your skin will feel as
nourished as you are happy from soaking some rays!
For those with particularly sensitive skin and prone to heat rash, Aloe Up SPF50 Pro Sunscreen
is not only soothing to the skin and provides optimal protection from the sun, its also healing,
non-greasy, easily absorbed and water resistant, making it the perfect sunscreen for active children
and adults.

Brief History of
FATHERS DAY

n the UK, Fathers Day is celebrated on the third Sunday of

June. Established to complement Mothers Day, on which
families and children celebrate mothers, Fathers Day
celebrates male parenting and fatherhood.
Originating in the U.S thanks to a young woman by the
name of Sonora Smart Dodd, Sonora believed there should
be a day to honour fathers just like that of Anna Jarvis
Mothers Day which shed heard about at a sermon. Raised
by her father William Jackson Smart who was Civil War
veteran and single parent of six, Sonora worked to organise the worlds
first ever Fathers Day celebration which was held at the YMCA in her
hometown of Spokane, Washington on June 16th, 1910.
Promoting Fathers Day was not an easy task and it was many years
before Sonora was able to begin promoting it on a national level. It
wasnt until 1972 that Fathers Day became a recognised national
celebratory day. Today, whilst Fathers Day is not a public bank holiday
in the UK, the day itself is widely recognised as being one to honour
and treat fathers from all walks of life by children and families.
With Fathers Day 2015 landing on Sunday June 21st, were also set
to celebrate the longest day of the year which marks the beginning of
summer!

Get the most out of spring/summer 2015 and

boost your fitness like never before! Getting
beach body ready is on everyones minds but
theres no better self-esteem boost than to
simply keep active. You might be feeling the
pressure to step things up at the gym or even
pull out that dusty rowing machine from the
cupboard under the stairs but guess what?
As cheesy as this may sound, theres a whole
world out there to explore; all you need to do
is shove on a sports bra, pull on some tracksuit
bottoms, lace up your trainers and GO!
Love your borough but feel like youre
living in a concrete jungle? Use the city to
your advantage and map out a meticulously
planned route for a run thatll take you places
you never quite have time to go. For running
routes in London, map out your own or check
out those that thousands have done before
via mapmyrun.com. From tried and tested
routes spanning scenic Hyde Park to bustling
Brixton, theres nothing quite like seeing the
city when your adrenalins pumping. If youre
not a confident runner and need some help
training, Zombies, Run! 5l Training is the
perfect fitness app for beginners. Available via
iTunes for iOS and Google Play for Android,
this immersive running audio adventure
will motivate you only the way a hoard of
bloodthirsty Zombies can!
Keen to build up your upper body strength
but tired of pumping iron? Indoor climbing
might just be for you. The Castle Climbing

Centre in Stoke Newington (closest tube

station: Manor House) offers not only private
and group coaching sessions but equipment
hire too. For adults, there are several
introductory classes available for learning
how to climb; perfect for beginners and
suitable for those who need a refresher course.
South of the river at Jags Sports Club in
Dulwich, adults can learn the ropes with the
clubs Beginners Climbing Course covering
knots and rope-work, belaying, correct use of
equipment and climbing techniques.
What better way to cool down yet stay fit
in the height of summer than to take a dip
in the pool? Were not just talking lounging
on a deck chair here, we mean business. It
might be fun to take to the flumes and while
theres nothing wrong with joining the kids
for a splash around the shallow end, nothing
beats doing laps like youre an Olympic
swimmer. Dont worry if youre not quite
there however, training can be fun and with
the London Aquatics Centres pools now open
to the public, theres absolutely no harm in
giving it a go! For competent swimmers, try
the 50 metre Competition pool which features
10 lanes for fitness swimming. If youre a
sucker for some excitement however, you can
always give Extreme Aqua Splash a try; a 40
metre long inflatable course for competent
swimmers in the Competition pool designed
to test both balance and nerves!

The idea for these shoe bags

was formed during a flight to
Germany few years ago. While
doing a check list in my head
if everything I need was in the
suitcase above (I always travel
with hand luggage only), I
thought how nice would be if
I can pack my shoes in more
presentable and tidy way. For
instance, instead the usual
Sainsburys plastic bag, a nice
cotton one, with colourful pair
of shoes on it (it was later on
I realised one shoe looks much
better than two).
The shoe bags are made form
organic cotton and painted by
hand with textile paint. They
could be washed in washing
machine without colour fading
away.
I keep drawing them one by
one. It gives me the freedom to
change the design and colour
every time. I very often take
my ideas from other peoples
shoes. Ordinary people on
the streets of London on their
way to work who are just
themselves, without realising
how inspirational their personal
style may be for somebody like
me.
This is a product for shoe
lovers and Nature lovers. The
rest of the products are good
quality wool and cotton fabrics,
freehand embroidery on top
and immense passion for
illustration

UNINITI ATED
LONDONER
With mini heatwave spurts about to take hold of the city

several vital areas of London living

PUBLIC TRANSPORT
NICE: Regular use of antiperspirants. Its not your
fault you sweat; in fact, if youre sweating when its
hot, its a good sign! Youre a perfectly well-functioning
human being. BUT in the height of Peak fare travel
when everyones squished like upright sardines,
desperately clinging to a pole to cease from falling
into those around them, B.O is most unpleasant,
NOT NICE: Complaining that its hot. We know youre
hot because guess what? Were hot too! Unfortunately,
if theres nothing anyone can do about it, listening
to someone complaining loudly just makes the heat
even more agitating.
AT THE LIDO
NICE: Sliding gently into the pool. And if you
remember any childhood swimming lessons, its the
safest way to get in too! Imagine curling up on a sun
lounger; youve just applied your sun tan lotion and
are about to get back into that paperback you brought
along and suddenlySPLASH! While kids may get
away with this one, if youre grown, youd better get
in the boring (but safe) way.
NOT NICE: Hogging the sun lounger. You may have
a right to reserve your deck chair and for the most
part, throwing your towel over one does mean no
one will mess with your stuff. If youre having way
too much fun doing laps or staying cool in the water
however, it might be worth considering keeping all
your belongings in a locker. Deck chairs at Lidos are
but a rare commodity dont hog unless you mean
to use!
AT THE PARK
NICE: Tidying up after a picnic. Whether youve just
shared a Carluccios hamper or stocked up on different
varieties of M&S Percy Pig sweets, its always nice
when your local park retains a sense of cleanliness
after a packed day of heatwave picnic goers.
NOT NICE Letting your adorable puppy capture
the hearts of strangers, only to then abandon all
conversation to avoid picking up its poop. This applies
everywhere in London and not only the park pick
up it!

HAY FEVER

Its

that time of
year again
Youre awoken
by the sound
of si n g i n g
birds in the early hours of the morning
and despite falling asleep once more,
youre abruptly awoken yet again by the
harsh morning sunlight piecing through
the gap in the curtains. And this was
all before your morning alarm even
stood but a chance! Spring/Summer in
London is a welcome thing but with all
its perks who doesnt love a chance to
leave work early for team drinks at the
pub? comes several downsides; the
symptoms of hay fever being probably
the biggest!
Some of you may have already been
taking your one-a-day antihistamine
tablets but others may only just be
starting to feel the effects of pollen
allergies now. Near constant sneezing,
a runny nose and read, itchy eyes are
just about the last thing you need while
London weathers at its best but what
can you do to ease your symptoms
without dosing up and consequently
putting yourself into a self-induced
daze?
Luckily, there are a number of things
hay fever sufferers can do to make
life just a little simpler. Although not
everyone can afford to lock themselves
indoors on days that the pollen count
is particularly high (over 50) we have
work to do and errands to run, after all!
try wearing wraparound sunglasses to
stop pollen getting into your eyes when
outdoors. When back home after being
outdoors, its also worth taking a shower
and putting the days clothes in the wash
to remove all traces of pollen that may
have attached itself to you, allowing you
a good nights rest.

As for natural home remedies for hay

fever, those who dont want to rely solely
on medication can take solace in the
fact that there are many proven steps
to ease symptoms, although consistency
is key!
To loosen phlegm and break up
congestion in the chest, try drinking
ginger tea with raw honey. This will not
only strengthen your immune system
but serves as a natural antihistamine.
Green tea will do the same and is
considered one of the best ways to build
your immune system not at all bad for
regular consumption! To sort out that
runny nose and kick nasal and sinus
congestion back to where it came from,
drink cold peppermint tea which will
also soothe coughing related to allergies
and hay fever.
Steaming is an effective way to break
up congestion and ease symptoms of hay
fever. Try adding drops of eucalyptus oil
to a large bowl of hot water and gently
inhaling the steam. To soothe teary,
itchy eyes, purchase non-alcoholic
calendula liquid, dilute a few drops in
cool water and use as an eye wash. For
another ingestible treat, take the flesh
from some lemon and grapefruit to boil
in water and add raw honey once cooled
for relief of symptoms.
Lastly, it never hurts to take a vitamin
C supplement! A known natural
antihistamine, vitamin C can be found
in oranges, grapefruit and lemons. With
bioflavonoids also present (boasting
powerful anti-allergy properties), the
combination of bioflavonoids and
vitamin C act as a natural decongestant
and antihistamine for hay fever
sufferers.

oon, itll be summer

in the city and
barbeque season will
have well and truly
begun! Admittedly,
BBQ parties are
hard to plan in
London; as much as
the weather forecast
does its best, theres
simply just no telling
when the clouds
will roll over and
raindrops ruin all
that couldve been.
It seems BBQs
i n L ondon a re
almost always an
impromptu occurrence and however
inconvenient the rain may be, the
uncertainty only adds to an English BBQs
charm. Heres a classic BBQ recipe to get
you in the spirit for an English summer!
Theres nothing more satisfying than the
smell (and taste, obviously) of cooking pork
belly. For an easy party dish to serve up
to friends, pick up a 3kg free-range British
pork belly with rib bones intact.
Rub the pork belly down with 10g
mustard powder, crushed garlic and star
anise, 10g paprika, 1 tsp chilli powder and
20g soft dark brown sugar. Once done, pack

the pork belly into a large freezer bag and

leave overnight in the fridge.
As for the BBQ sauce, youll need 300ml
ketchup, 350ml cider vinegar, 1 tsp salt, 2
tbsp paprika, 1 tbsp molasses, 2 tsp chilli
powder, 1 tsp cayenne pepper, 100ml
Worcestershire sauce and lastly, crushed
garlic cloves. Youll need to mix all of the
ingredients in a pan, simmer gently and
stirring for roughly 20 minutes until its
thick. Once youve passed the mixture
through a sieve and into a bowl, keep it
covered and chilled overnight.
When its time to cook the pork belly, heat
the oven to 160C or fan 140C (gas mark
3). Toss some sliced onions into a large
roasting tin and remove the pork belly from
the freezer bag to put on top. Pour 600ml
dry cider over the pork belly and cover with
tin foil. Roast for 3 4 hours until tender
and almost falling off the bone.
Towards the end of cooking, take the pork
belly out of the oven and brush all over with
some of the BBQ sauce. Move the pork
belly to the lit BBQ (onto the rack, above
the coals) and cover with the lid. Cook for
approximately one hour, making sure to
turn the pork belly at regular intervals and
brushing with more BBQ sauce as you go.
Once its ready, you can shred the meat
from the bones and serve to your eagerly
awaiting guests with some buns and relish!

unday brunch is fast becoming

a London institution and with
more Instagram snaps with
#brunch popping up on our
feeds faster than Kim Kardashian
can share selfies, its about time
we took a good look at some of
the citys best brunch venues
Whether brunch is simply
a polite way of putting breakfast for the
hungover or downright lazy (who wants
to get out of bed before 10am on a weekend, anyway?), there is indeed an origin
of the term but thats not what this articles about. For lovers of a good ol hair
of the dog, House of Hos newly re-launched unlimited boozy brunch is the way
to go. Right in the heart of Soho on Old
Compton Street, who wouldnt want to
indulge in Bobby Chinns contemporary Vietnamese cuisine with unlimited

bubbly on the side? To top it all off, if

you havent already filled up on bubbles,
sharing plates, your choice of signature
HO dish, fragrant jasmine rice and more,
youre also in for a treat with House of
Hos dessert of the day.
If, like yours truly, you didnt have the
kahunas to queue for two hours for dinner at any of the three Dishoom restaurants in London, sampling their breakfast
menu (or brunch, for all intents and
purposes) for a taste of Indian street food
might just be how to do it. Ravenous? Go
for the Big Bombay (an Indian twist on
the English breakfast). Partly stuffed but
somewhat intrigued by the menu? Order
a Bun Maska, a toasted bun with butter
on the inside, to dip into your spicy chai
(nothing naughty, we promise).
For high rise dining and an absurdly
delicious brunch tasting menu only Da-

niel Doherty can serve up, Duck & Waffle in Londons Heron Tower is the
place to be. No doubt youll have seen
this on many a Best Brunch list but
when its way too early for Sushi Samba
(situated on the floor below), Duck &
Waffles all-day, all-night hours are just
what every night owl or early riser needs.
With Duck & Waffle as the highest dining location in the country, itd be silly
to pass up staring down into the Gherkin
as you work your way through the restaurants most memorable brunch dishes.
By now, youll have probably read the
word brunch so many times that its
begun to sound like the name of a vegetable one with considerable crunch at
that. Rest assured however, that brunch
is not at all a vegetable and in fact provides the same warming feeling one gets
when pulled into a prolonged bear hug.
