Grading Policy
Final exam: 50%
Midterms: 30% (2 x 15%)
Graded Lab sessions: 10% (2 x 5%)
Group Project: 10%

At the end of each lab session, you have to submit your solution to the
assignment through edveNTUre or by email to your tutors. Your
assignments need to be submitted by the next Monday 12:00 SGT. For
example, if your lab session is on Monday 19th of August, or Tuesday 20th
of August, please submit before Monday 26th at 12:00 SGT. Two of them
will be graded (account for 5% of the final grade each). Which lab sessions
are graded will be chosen randomly and you will not be warned in
advance.
There will be 2 midterms, in which students have to solve assignments
(i.e. write programs) on a computer, closed book, no smartphone/internet
allowed. These will take place during Week 8 and Week 13. The midterms
account for 15% of the final grade each. The first midterm will include all
topics covered in Weeks 1-6, the second graded lab session will include all
topics covered in Weeks 7-11. The preceding lab sessions are used to
prepare the students for the midterms. If you cannot attend your chosen
lab session that week, you will have to contact the lecturer to obtain
permission to switch to another session in the same week. If you miss a
lab because of a severe reason approved by the School, it is not counted
towards the final grade.
There will be a group project during Weeks 10-12, accounting for 10% of
the final grade. The project will consist of 5 parts and each groups consist
of 5 students. Each of you is responsible for one part of the project.
The final exam will be a 2 hours written exam, closed book, no

computer/smartphone/internet allowed. It will represent 50% of the final

grade.

Systems of linear equations, Gaussian elimination

Matrices, inverses, determinants
Euclidean n-spaces: vectors, vector spaces, subspaces, linear independence,
basis, dimension
Vector spaces associated with matrices: row and column spaces, null space, rank
General vector spaces & examples (e.g. vector spaces of polynomials and other
functions)

A number of four 20 minute quizzes will be given during the normal

tutorial hours. These will be open book short examinations.
The time of the quizzes will be announced well in advance.
A midterm will be given on October 9, during the lecture hours. This will be
a closed book, no calculators, exam.
The final grade will be computed as follows:
Quizzes during tutorials 12%
Midterm exam 18%
Final exam 70%
Rules for midterm:- If you cannot attend the midterm exam for a severe
reason certified by an official document, the midterm will not be counted
towards your final grade (note that such official documents must be
submitted to the Chair's office of SPMS, not to the lecturer)
- If you do not attend the midterm, and do not submit an official
document, a score of 0 has to be given for the midterm.
Rules for quizzes:
- In each quiz, a maximum of 3 points can be earned. There will be 4
quizzes in total, usually one every 2-3 weeks. They will be
announced 1 week in advance.
- Duration of quizzes: 20 minutes. The quizzes usually consist of two
"small" problems which test the basic understanding of the topics.
