SIMPLE PAST

The Past Simple tense, also called the Simple Past, is used for past actions
that happened either at a specific time, which can either be given by a time
phrase (yesterday, last year, etc.) or understood from the context.
GRAMMAR:
Affirmative:
Regular verbs.
Subject + verb+ed + complement.
Example:
The manager traveled to Thailand.
Irregular verbs:
Subject + verb(past form) + complement.
Example:
We bought a gift for you.
Negative:
Subject + did + not + verb (base form) + complement.
Examples:
The manager didnt travel to chile.
We didnt buy those books.
Question:
Did/Didnnt + subject + verb(base form) + complement + ?
Example:
Did he travel to thailand?
Answers:
Yes, he did.
No, he didnt.
(wh) + did/didnt + subject + verb + complement +
Example
When did we buy this things?
Answer: We bought these things when we were in Brasil.

REMEMBER:

Use the simple past for experiences at a definite time in the


past.
A: Karenn had a job interview last week. Unfortunately , she didnt get
the job.
B: How did she feel about it?
Use the simple past when the time being discussed has
finished.
A: I interviewed for three different Jobs last month. (Last month is
finished.)
B: Did you her back from anybody?
Use the simple past with for and since when the actions have
already finished.
A: I studied Spanish for two years when we lived in Per. (Im not
studying Spanish now.)
B: And now?
A: No, I didnt continue after we left.

PRESENT PERFECT.
It is used to expressed an action which happened or completed in past but
usually the action which happened or completed at a short time before now
(near past) not a very long time before now. Specific time such as two years
ago, last week or that day is usually not used in the sentences of in this
tense. It means that this tense expresses the action whose time when it
happened, is not exactly specified but it used to refer to some action that
happened or completed in near past.

Rules: Auxiliary verb has or have is used in sentence. 3rd form of verb
(past participle) is used as main verb in sentence.

REMENBER:
Use the present perfect for experiences at an indefinite time
in the past.
A: I have been laid off before, but Ive never been fired. Have you
ever been fired?
B: No, I havent.
Use the present perfect when the time being discussed has
not finished.

A: Ive already spoken with the Company manger twice this week. (Its
still this week)
B: has she told you anything?
A: Not yet.
Use the present perfect with for and since when the actions
have not finished.
A: Ive studied English since 2009. (I am still studying English.)
B: Oh, so youve studied English for six years now?
