DELPHOS Retired Sgt. Major James Jim Berheide,
89, enjoys traveling and spending time with his grandchildren. While he and his wife, Bonnie, have slowed down
a little, the couple still hits the road and they ended up in
Delphos this summer while attending a reunion in Lima.
Berheide, a Jackson Township, Putnam County, native,
started his military career on Sept. 14, 1944. He got mixed
reactions from his parents.
My mother didnt want me to go and my dad told me I
needed to go in the Navy so I could have a clean bed every
night, Berheide said.
What sealed the deal was a talk he had with his friend,
Paul Siebeneck.
Paul was in the Marine Corps and after I talked to him,
it was confirmed that I was joining, Berheide recalled.
Kids in 1944 didnt get away from home much to see the
world and that was the way to do it. Everyone wanted in on
the action in World War II.
He was called to active duty on Dec. 27, 1944. Berheide
reported to Cleveland and then was sent to Parris Island,
North Carolina, for boot camp and then to Camp Lejeune
for advance military combat training.
I was shipped out of Norfolk, Virginia, to the Panama
Canal in early 1945 and joined the 3rd Marine Division,
Berheide said.
On Aug. 6, 1945, during World War II, an American
B-29 bomber dropped the worlds first deployed
atomic bomb over the Japanese city of Hiroshima.
The explosion wiped out 90 percent of the city and
DELPHOS Keith
Harman served his country
in Army during the Vietnam
War. For the past 30 years, hes
served his fellow veterans as
the Van Wert County Veterans
Service Officer and through
his membership at the local
Veterans of Foreign Wars Post.
Harman took the job as
county veterans service officer
in 1991 and retired in 2011.
I filed a lot of claims for veterans, dependent spouses and
children for state and federal
benefit through the Department
of Veterans Affairs, Harman
said. It can be a difficult and
confusing process. I was a way
to cut through some of the red
tape of dealing with the government.
On July 22, Harman
was elected Junior Vice
Commander-in-Chief of the
Veterans of Foreign Wars at
the VFWs 116th National
Convention in Pittsburgh.
He will become Senior Vice
Commander-in-Chief next and
then National Commander.
Once I started serving in
elected positions and on committees, I realized I wanted to
go as far as I could, Harman
said.
Harman is the face of the
VFW, attending meetings and
conventions to bring awareness
of the organization and bring
about needed change.
The more I did and more
involved I got and learned
about the organization and what
they do, the more I wanted to
be involved, he added. The
National Commander can meet
with the president of the United
States and talk about veteran
issues. Thats huge.

Right now we do have some concerns about the practice field, Stober

dont want anyone to get hurt.
All-Purpose Contracting has give

Right now that field drains toward

From Jersey to Ohio, the Midtown Men bring 50s music to NPAC on Nov. 14
BY ED GEBERT
DHI Media Editor
egebert@timesbulletin.com
VAN WERT This Jersey
boy is from Ohio. Daniel
Reichard, one of the stars who
brought the Broadway show
Jersey Boys to life ten years
ago is now on tour with the
rest of the original cast, not
to perform Jersey Boys, but
to bring the spirit of music
to the Niswonger Performing
Arts Center on Nov. 14 as the
Midtown Men.
Im very proud of the success Ive had as a stage actor
in New York, Reichard said.
You know, that was the original idea was to go to New York
and be in all these off-Broadways shows, and Broadway
shows, and have a career as a
stage actor because I love that
art form, I love live theatre.
So I never in a million years
thought that I would have a
career as a singing actor
almost like a rockstar, like.
Reichard originated the
role of Four Seasons songwriter Bob Gaudio in the original Broadway production of
Jersey Boys a decade ago.
The four who played the original roles brought together such
energy and audience appeal
that they broke out of the roles,
leaving the stage production
and forming the singing group
The Midtown Men. Now they
tour as music stars rather than
acting stars.
I prefer the word, icon,
Reichard joked in a conversation with the Times Bulletin
on Friday.
Reichard grew up in
Cleveland, attending St.
Ignatius High School, an allboys Catholic school in that
city.
I had a really wonderful
childhood in Ohio, he concluded.
These days, his life is lived
on the road with the other guys
in The Midtown Men: Christian
Hoff, Michael Longoria, and J.
Robert Spencer.
Well, traveling is very

DELPHOS Different
week, same result.
Jefferson and Spencerville
met up for the second week
in a row on the gridiron, this
time on Saturday night at
Stadium Park in a Region 22
quarterfinal.
Last week, the Wildcats
won their third straight
Northwest Conference crown
with a 26-10 victory and
knocked the Bearcats from
the ranks of the unbeaten.
This time, the third-seeded Red and White knocked
their backyard rivals out of
the playoffs with a 24-10 triumph.
Its very tough to play
them back to back. They are a
great team all the way around;
they are a class coaching staff
and program and we knew
it would be another 48-minute battle, Jefferson head
coach Chris Sommers said.
Whether its one time or 10,
this game will be tough and
physical. Our defense bent
but didnt break. Our offensive line is really starting to
gel; they play so hard for
each other and their getting
such cohesion.
Jefferson (10-1) will
battle
second-seeded
Mechanicsburg (11-0) at 7
p.m. at Sidney Memorial
Stadium.
Thats a great team all
the way around. When you
lose to them twice in a row,
you have to give them all
the credit; they are the bet(LV) 18:35.5; 141. Cameron ter team, Spencerville head
Bowersock (A) 18:47; 143. man John Zerbe said. We

Jefferson senior Josh Teman gets upfield during a punt return versus Spencerville Saturday night at Stadium Park. (DHI
Media/John Parent)
Spencerville tried an
onside kick and nearly recovered but it was ruled they
touched the ball too early,
giving Jefferson field position at the guest 45. Binkley
tore off a 35-yarder and finished it off two plays later at
the 5 as he took a pitch off the
left side, planted and burst
through the seam to paydirt with 1:15 to go. Mercer
tacked on the final point.

Leche Frita
(Crisp Custard Squares)
Serves 6
18
fluid ounces creamy
milk
3
strips lemon zest
1/2 cinnamon stick
4
ounces
superfine
sugar, plus extra for dusting
4
tablespoons
corn
starch
2
tablespoons flour
for
frying
2
eggs, to coat
6
tablespoons bread
crumbs
Ground cinnamon
for dusting
Bring the milk, lemon zest,
cinnamon stick, and sugar to
a boil in a saucepan, stirring
gently. Cover and leave off the
heat to infuse for 20 minutes.
Put the cornstarch and flour
in a bowl and beat in the egg
yolks with a wooden spoon.
Start adding some of the milk
until the batter is smooth.
Strain in the rest of the hot
milk, then pour back into the
pan. Cook over a low heat,
stirring continuously. It will
not curdle, but does thicken
unevenly if you let it. Cook
for a couple of minutes until it becomes a thick custard
that separates from the side
of the pan. Beat it hard with
the spoon to keep it smooth.
Pour into a small baking tray,
smoothing to a square, about 8
x 8 inches and 1/2 inch deep.
Cool and then chill.
Pour oil into a shallow skillet to a depth of about 1/2 inch
and heat until very hot. Cut
the custard into 12 squares.

Championship tickets
Many sports fans dream of attending a
championship game, whether that game
is the Super Bowl in the National Football League, the World Series in Major
League Baseball, an NBA Finals game,
or whatever sport most stokes a particular sports fans passion. Tickets have
long been a go-to gift for sports fans, but
holiday shoppers who want to go above
and beyond may want to purchase tickets to the championship of a friend or
loved ones favorite sport. Super Bowl
tickets tend to be the most expensive
tickets in American sports, and such a
costly gift might be more than your holiday budget can handle. Championships
Television
Many sports fans now prefer to watch
their favorite sports on television rather
than in person. Remarkable advancements in technology have made watching the game at home not much different
than being there in person, and watching
from home wont require fans to pay for
travel, parking or tickets. A new smart
television that makes it possible for
sports fans to stream out-of-town games
or watch online highlights on big screens
may be just the thing your favorite fanatic is hoping for this season.
Gym or league membership
Some sports fans are not merely content to watch their favorite sports; they
also want to compete. Devoted fans of
mixed martial arts might appreciate
a membership to a local MMA gym,
where they can mimic their favorite
competitors moves all while getting
in shape and meeting like-minded men
and women who share their passion for
MMA. Offer to pay for the first several
months of a loved ones membership, or
if your budget allows, buy a 12-month
Thinking of recycling in financial terms may make some people more apt to recycle, especially when it comes to aluminum cans. According to Dirty Metals, a research publication
produced by Oxfam America, Inc., more than 50 million aluminum cans are tossed into the trash
rather than recycled each year. That scrap metal is estimated to be valued at $750 million. Many
stores have bottle- and can-deposit collection centers that provide a cash return for returned
cans. Recycling scrap metal also helps reduce the production of new cans, which has a trickle-down effect on consumers. Reducing costs associated with mining for aluminum and new can
production helps keep costs down in the long run.
