Jigsaw Review of Chapter 1 Concepts, Holt Lessons 1-1 to 1-4

Teacher notes:
Objectives: Students review sets of numbers, properties of real numbers, square roots
and simplifying algebraic expressions.
Students become familiar with the structure of their textbook.
Students start building team skills.
In a jigsaw cooperative structure, students are in groups. Members of original groups
count off to go to other groups to become experts in some subject. They then return to
their original group to share information.
Divide class into groups of 4. Have groups order themselves by the total number of
letters in their name. Those with the shortest names go to expert group 1, next shortest to
expert group 2, etc.
Information gathering sheets are below for each groups 1,3 and 4. Use Lesson 1-2 from
Know It Notebook for Group 2. They should meet with their expert group and use the
book to answer the questions. This should take about 20 minutes. They should then
return to the original group and share the information. Either this period or the next
period distribute a group quiz and allow them to work together. Later give them a similar
or identical quiz to complete.

Group 1: Lesson 1-1 Sets of Numbers

What is the objective of the lesson?

Real Numbers
Give two examples of types of numbers that are subsets of other types
of numbers.
What symbol means is an element of?
Complete a table similar to Example 1B for problem 1 (a and b) at the
top of page 7.

Group 3: Lesson 1-3 Square roots

What are the objectives of the lesson?
Are any Algebra 2 TEKS covered in the section?
Vocabulary:
Radical symbol

Without your calculator, how could you find the integers between
which the square root of 19 lies?

How do the product property and quotient property of square roots

allow you to simplify expressions? Demonstrate with problem 2 at the
bottom of page 22.

Where is the quickest place to find help with doing problem 2?

Copy the graphic organizer at the bottom of page 23 on the back of
this page and write examples of each operation with square roots in
the organizer.

How can you find where square root functions are covered in the book?

Group 4: Lesson 1-4 Simplifying Algebraic Expressions

What are the objectives of the lesson?

particular section?)
