A Criticism for Margaret Moos Argument

In the text Changes in Mens Role in Response to Changes in Womens Role Margaret
Moo (2007) claims that changes in womens role make mens role change, especially in
business life. She gives examples of mens new roles such as being family commited. She
also claims that this destroys the traditional superior image of males. Moreover, she shows the
negative effects of women in business life on males. However, I do not agree with the writer,
because while she tells us changes in females role and how this affects males, she shows
them as if these changes affect manhood only negatively. Therefore, she seems reactionary.
First of all, she shows only the negative effects of changes in females role on males life. For
example, in order to support her argument, she quotes Petrikin who says that new type of
males are more thoughtful and more gentle. Moreover, she says Petrikin sees no happiness or
energy and he says these soft males usually get along with stronger females. However, there
can be positive effects as well as negative ones. For example, working women can lighten the
burdens on men in business life.In addition, many countries, particulary western countries,
need workers.Consequently, they take immigrants in order to meet this necessity. Thanks to
employed women this necessity can be met easly.
Secondly, she tells us that women in business life is the end of manhood. In other words, she
says if men lose superiority supported by business life, this will be end of manhood. However,
she forgets that manhood does not just mean being the breadwinner there can be other
features of a breadwinner family father such as raising children or teaching them
something.Even if women do not work, a breadwinner father can care for his children,
because these are the duty of a father as well as the mother. To illustrate, millions of males

who care for their children while they carry on their career and superiority are the most clear
proof of this.
Last of all, she tells us that men always feel lonely and helpless, and they cannot not show
their weaknesses. Moreover, she says that these lonely and helpless males suffer from womens
asking more concerns about their status.Ispite of the fact that, females cannot limit their right
to work just to make men feel stronger. She also quotes Petrikin who says that men were
nurtured

to

develop

themselves

into

physical

tough

and

intellectually

strong

humans. Therefore, these strong humans cannot get along with strong females. However, there
is impossibility of turning every women into care taker of the house and the children.
In conlusion, although she does not clearly say that women should not work, she tries to show
that men suffer because of women in business life and their new roles.Although there is a
reality that modern life changes everything and of course manhood will change, she still
shows alterations in mens role as if they are only negative.
