Wegenerallybelievethatlackofmaterialisticgainisthemajorcauseofsufferingandasa
resultwedevoteallourtimeandenergytoacquireit.Wepresumethattheaccumulationof
wealthcanbringhappiness.Butwhenwecontemplate,thissamewealthcouldbethecauseof
alloursuffering.
Weneedtolearntheartofbalancinghappinessandsufferings.Weknowthatmoneyis
essentialforustoenjoylife,butweareunawarethatbeinginpursuitofmoneyalsobringsin,
immenseproblemsandanxiety.Evenourfamilyandfriends,withwhomweenjoysomany
happymoments,sometimestheytoocanbethecauseofworryandtension.
Inrecentyearsourlivingstandardshaveimprovedimmensely.Ourunderstandingoftheworld
hasincreasedconsiderably,andasaresultwehavewitnessedremarkablematerialprogress
buttherehasnotbeenacorrespondingincreaseinhumanhappiness.

Thereisalotofsufferingintheworldtodaywithmanyproblems.Indeed,itcouldbesaidthat
therearenowmoreproblemsandgreaterunhappinessthaneverbefore.Thisshowsthatthe
solutiontoourproblemsandthoseofthesocietyasawhole,doesnotsimplylieinthe
knowledgeoftheexternalworldbutintheinnerworldofselfaswell.Bothinternalandexternal
worldsareinterconnectedtous.Haveweeverthoughtandlookedaroundwhatisgoingonin
theworld.Weneedtonoticerightnowandnotewhatwedontlikeandwhatiscausingpainto
us?Wearesimplygluedtothe114chapterbookcalled"Quran".Thepagesofthatpractical
book(ZalikalKitab)havemanymorelessonstolearn,ratherthanponderingonsomeforeign
languagetograspthecontentsofthemessage.
Wearesoquickatblamingeverythingontheexternalfactors,forallthebadthatishappening
inourlives,thatwemissoutthevaluablemessage.Thebasicdilemmathatweface,willguide
usbackhometowardsthetruth,ofwhowereallyareandwhytheexternalfactorsaffectus.For
examplesimplybycuttingoftrees,thequalityofourbasicneedsisaffected,suchas,theair
webreathe,thesunshinewebaskin,thewatercycleandthefoodsupplies.Thisprovesthat
wedonotliveinisolation,infactweareinterconnectedtotheexternalworldwhichwebarely
realize.Ourbrainwouldstopfunctioning,ifitisn'tconnectedwiththemind,ourtruelord.
Thehappinessandsufferingareactuallystatesofthemind,andsotheirmaincausescannot
befoundoutsidetheself.Therealsourceofhappinessisthestateofinnerpeace(Muslim).If
ourmindispeaceful,weshallbehappyallthetime,regardlessofexternalconditionsapart
fromourbasicneedsofsurvival.Butifitisdisturbedortroubledinanyotherway,weshall
neverbehappy,nomatterhowgoodourexternalconditionswouldbe.
Externalconditionscanonlymakeushappy,ifourmindispeaceful.Mindactslikeaseesaw
betweenhappinessandsuffering.Wecanevaluatethisthroughourownexperiences.For
instance,evenifweareinthemostbeautifulsurroundingsandhaveeverythingweneed,but
themomentwegetangry,anyamountofhappinesswemayhavedisappears.Thisisbecause
negativefeelingslikesuspicion,jealousy,rivalryandangerdestroyourinnerpeace.Others
attitudeormannersalsoaffectsus.
Wecanseefromthisthatifwewanttrue,lastinghappinessweneedtodevelopandmaintaina
specialexperienceofinnerpeace.Theonlywaytodothisisbytrainingourmindthroughright
andpositivethoughtsgraduallyreducingandeliminatingthenegativityfromourlife,caused
byadisturbedstateofmind.Replacingthemwithapositive,peacefulstateofmind,andthatis
byhavingpositivepeoplearoundyou.
Thosewhofailtounderstandtheimportanceoftheinnermechanismofself,aligningwiththe
externalmechanismwillneverbesatisfiedwiththeirlifeandwillneverachievethestateofbliss
theyneed.Thealignmentorunityorbondingofexternalandinternalmechanismiscalled
Tauhidin"Islamicterminology"thealignmentorunityofselfwiththeexternalrequireslotsof
sacrifices.

Peoplewhodonotquestiontheirownplightwillalwaysfeelthedeficiencyofnotfulfillingtheir
desiresandwillalwaysremaininsecure.Suchsedentaryandselfcenteredpeopleexpecteasy
succorfromunexpectedquarterstofulfilltheirdreams,ratherthanutilizingtheirown
KnowledgeableMindandworkingonit.Thesekindofconditionsaretheperfectbreeding
groundforthemtobelieveintheemergenceofanaliensupernaturalsaviorintheformofthe
AlmightyGod,whocouldimprovetheirplight.

Thetasksthatwefailtoaccomplishwewant"God"tofulfillthem,onourbehalf.Becausewe
feelthatitistheWillof"God"thatisthemainhurdleinfulfillingourdesires.Ifstilltheirdesireis

whatisgoodforus.Orsomewiseramongthemsaythat"God"istakingtheirexamination,so
theyshouldexercisepatience.Different"logics"tojustifytheexistenceandimportanceof
"God"arepresented,buttheydon'tdaretoponderanythingcontrarytothebeliefof"Almighty
God".
Nowchangingthe"willofGod"becomesthebiggesttaskintheirlife.Toappeasethe"Almighty
God",differentkindsofritualsareinvented.Theresultofsuchmentalityisthatthealien
"AlmightyGod"becomestheOwnerandDriveroftheindividualslife.Maintainingthe
relationshipwith"God"becomesamatterofprimeimportanceandpride.DifferentHolyBooks
arebeingpublishedtoknowthewillof"God".Placesofworshipandpilgrimagesare
establishedandaregivenutmostimportance."Caretakers"oftheseplacesaregivenimmense
reverence.
Thewholeliferevolvesaround,theappeasementof"God"andhowonecanescapefromHis
punishment.ToappeaseGod,firstwehavetoappeasethe"Godmen"andtoappeasethese
Godmenwehavetofleecethe"Godmensassistants".Suchpracticesemergebecauseofthe
greedforrewardsandfearofpunishment,thatbeginstohauntandeventuallybecomesthe
solebasisofoneslife.Servinghumanityhastakenthebackseat.Worshipingofsuperficial
Godorgodshasbecometheorderoftheday.
THEREISNOGOD,EXCEPTTHESYSTEM
PreIslamicreligioninArabiaconsistedofindigenouspolytheisticbeliefs,NestorianChristianity,
JudaismandZoroastrianism.NestorianChristianitywasthedominantreligioninEasternArabia
priortotheadventofIslam.InthelatterstagesofthepreIslamicera,Christianitygained
convertswithsomeunorthodoxsects,suchastheGnosticsalsohavingapresence.
ThesedentarypeopleofpreIslamicEasternArabiaweremainlyAramaicspeakersandto
someextentPersianspeakers,whileSyrianfunctionedasaliturgicallanguage.InpreIslamic
times,thepopulationofEasternArabiaconsistedofChristianizeArabs,Armenians
Christians,PersianspeakingZoroastriansandJewishagriculturalists.Thisperiodwascalled
darkages,astherewerecompleteculturalandeconomicdeterioration.Therewastotal
absenceofenlightenmentandreasoningbecausereligiondoesnotallowitsfollowerstouse
intellectandforeseeoutsideitsfolds.
Insuchaneraofmultiplebeliefsanddoctrines,atoweringpersonalityappearedinArabia.He
wasidentifiedasMohammedIbnAbdullah(Respectedservantofthesystem)Manymany
salutationstohim.WhoproclaimedthephenomenalphraseThereisnoGod,exceptthe
systemHeunifiedArabiaintoasingleunitunderthisbanner.Hisphilosophywasofloveand
brotherhoodofmankind.Heencouragesusingreason,understandingthe
limitations/boundaries(hudood)ofthesystemandshunningblindworship.Hedearlywanted
toupliftmankindfromtheshamblesofblindworshipinginthenameofreligion.Hisexpressions
arerecordedinthegloriousbookcalledALQURAN(81:19)(69:40).ThefirstchapterofAl
QuranisAlFateha,whichisaboutthe'OpeningoftheMind'.

ThepreconditionofunderstandingAlKitabisremovingtheblockagefromtheMind.Hencethe
nameofthechapterisAlFatehawhichopenstheblockagesofmind,byexplainingthe

distinguishesateverymomentorstagesoflife.That'swhyallthe"messengers"follow
onlywhatisrevealedtothembytheirRabb,asQuranisthemental

WHYRABBISMINDORCONSCIOUSNESS?
Somepeoplethinkthatthemindisthebrain,butthatisincorrect.Thebrainisaphysicalorgan
thatcanbeseenwiththeeyesandcanbeoperatedifrequired.Eyesandearsarethe
extensionsofthebrain.
Themind,ontheotherhand,isnotaphysicalorgan.Itcannotbeseenwiththeeyes,nordoes
ithaveaphotographoranimage.Thebrain,therefore,isnotthemindbutsimplyapartofthe
body.

psychologicalimpactonusthus,createsafalsesenseofcontentment.Thisfeelingof
temporarysatisfactiondevelopsanattitudeofcarelessnessandharakiri.Thisisvery
dangerousasitencouragesafatalisticandsedentarylifestyle.Theignorantpeoplebelievethat
theirprayersareworkingforthem.Suchbeliefbreedsirresponsibilityanddependencyasthey
totallyrelyon"God"fortheirworkwithoutrealizingthatGodwillonlyhelpthemiftheyhelp
themselves(13:11)(8:53)byworkingsincerelyonastraightpath.
Theessentialpointofunderstandingthemindisthat,liberationfromsufferingscannotbefound
outsidethemind.Manistheprisonerofhisownthoughts.Servingthemindwithgoodthoughts
canbringoutthebestoutofit.Permanentliberationcanbefoundonlybytakinghelpofthe
mindforrightandstraightguidance.Feedingorservingofnegativefeelings,likeanger,
suspicion,fear,greed,miserliness,selfishnesscaninviteitswrathanditcanbethecauseof
ourgoingastray(1:7).
Therefore,ifwewanttobefreeofproblemsandattainlonglastingpeaceandhappinesswe
needtoincreaseourknowledgeandunderstandingofthemind,whichcanbringout
unimaginablebountiesinourfavor(108:12).TheanomalousbehavioroftheMind(Rabb)is
oneoftheimportantsubjectsoftheQuran.

Ihavetriedmylevelbesttostudythemeaningsaccordingtothecontextofthemessage.This
isdoneinordertomakethesubjectmorelogicaltothereaders.Someoftheimportantwords
thatsufferduetotheunnecessaryholinessofthewordsareRabb,Allah,Rasul,Nabi,Salat,
Zakat,Saum,Haj,Ramadan,Malaikah,Ibadat,Qatalthelistislong.Wehaveconfinedthe
meaningsoftheabovewordstojustoneortwomeanings,whicharecolloquialandpopular
meanings.Apartfromthesesocalledestablishedmeanings,thescholarsandthemasses
arenotreadytoeventhinkonotheraspectsandarecontentwiththeirbeliefs.Theynever
